Recent model Irons closest to Adams A4 Forged?

These were some great Irons.

Is there anything newer that has similar playability and forgiveness, combined with forged feel?

Here's what the Adams Idea A4 Forged (2009) looked like:

Common A4 shafts included Matrix Studio 84 gr graphite and DG SL steel shafts.

I would say the basic Callaway Steelhead XR iron might come close. The A4, however, has a flatter sole.

Maybe Wilson F5? Forged and have that sort of stabilizer bar going across the cavity.

I too have played the A4 irons since they first came out. I have the itch for some new irons but have not found anything that I have liked any better in the last few years. Might try a game improvement iron such as Cobra F9 irons. They seem to be well liked and are priced pretty good. Anybody ever compare through experience the F9's and the A4's? Its just tough to beat the Adams. As I'm getting a little older I would like something a little easier to hit and maybe gain a little distance back. For reference my 7 iron carries 165 comfortably. Any thoughts?

I would look at the Maltby PTM or TE Forged - the A4 sort of would sit between both

Maybe give the Cobra Forged TEC irons a run before the SZ model. Forged, resemble more of a muscle back, but packed with feel and forgiveness.

I had a set of these for a hot minute, never got along with them. Closest in size and shape would probably be the Taylormade 770 or the PSi if you want to go a model older to save a bit of money. Some of the newer Adams models like the CB1 or CB2 would be good competitors and can be had for cheap. In super new irons I would wager the Srixon 785 or Mizuno MP-20 MMC wouldn't be too far off the mark either, and will likely feel a bit better.

I also played the A4's for years; just changed last summer. As I got older, the DGSL shafts (stiff) became too much for my swing....ball flight was too low and I would struggle on the back nine to hit consistent shots. I looked at several current models but didn't like any; they didn't have the look and feel I wanted. Tried the Callaway Apex cf16's but hit too many fliers. Heard the same happens with most foam filled irons. Finally settled on the Adams CB3's with the KBS Tour 90 shafts. (stiff) They gave me everything I was looking for....a higher ball flight, no fatigue on the back nine, and no loss in distance. They are great clubs that perform as well as anything on the market today. You can still find them on Ebay for cheap; I got a set (4-GW) in great shape for $275.

I have a set of CB3’s with Steelfiber 110 stiff that I played for several years, but the shafts are a bit much for me, I think. Might have to break those out again and give them another whirl.

The sole grinds on the Adams A4, CB1, 2 & 3 just really work well for me.

I played the A4R 5-GW some of the best irons I have ever played.

Anybody thats actually played the A4's ever hit the Cobra F9's? Im looking to make my golf game easier.

I did years ago and liked the A4's. My ball striking was a bit better back then, but found them easy to play. I now game the Cobra Forged TEC irons that I find similar. While they somewhat resemble a MB iron, they are packed full of game improvement behind that face. You get the distance of a GI iron, with a bit more pleasing chassis in my opinion. Good luck.

I’m playing Forged Tech Black now, and am pretty happy with them, just miss the easy feel with which the Adams irons went through the turf.

I guess that was why I posted the question to start with.

Do the new 2020 Forged Tec’s have a little more rounded grind than the FTB’s?

If Cobra comes out with a DMB finish on the new ones I’ll definitely have a look.

If the door is what you're after, I'd say Srixon with the V Sole would work.

The A4 Forged were my first set of forged irons, and that's probably my first regret as far as an iron set that I got rid of. I went through 4 different sets after those before I settled on the Adams CB1 irons. I tried the Adams CB2, Taylormade MC (2012 model I believe), and probably another set that I can't remember. After the Adams CB1s, I used the Cobra Fly Z+ irons for 4 years, and I currently have the Ben Hogan PTx Pros. CB1s are probably my favorite irons ever, followed closely by the PTx Pros. I also was a fan of the Cobras.

What’s your take on the Hogan PTXpro’s? I want to demo them, but a lot of life stuff happening at the moment.
