Help! Keeping same shaft but changing from TM to Cobra adapter

Hi All,

I've gone back what feels like a million pages and did a search as well but couldn't find an adequate answer. Hoping someone could help me out.

I'm switching drivers this year from TaylorMade to Cobra but I want to keep and reuse my Copperhead Xtorsion shaft. Is there anything special I need to know when removing both the TM adapter to save my current shaft and removing the Cobra adapter off the stock shaft to save the adapter?

Thanks in advance.

OJSZ9DYEISZI.jpegThe Cobra adapters have a small plastic collar insert that are difficult to save, not sure if they are 100% necessary but likely provide some cushion for the shaft. Also, Since the Cobra has no ferrule the may be a small amount of epoxy/prep the shows when replacing a TM adapter. If you picky like me, tip trim it the 1/4” or I found the TM replacement ferrules don’t look to bad, are collared, and then match the TM length exactly .

hope this helps

Thanks for the info!

So I should probably order an extra Cobra tip instead of trying to save it from the OEM shaft that comes with the driver?

I've played Cobra drivers and fairways for several years now and none of them have that extra ferrule. I suspect that is a non-OEM adapter that was built with an extra ferrule.

OEM Cobra ferrules are very easy to get of the shaft. I just use my shaft puller to push it off since the entire adapter is aluminum.

I'm not 100% sure on the TaylorMade adapter but I believe the insertion depth for the Cobra adapter is shorter so there will be a little bit of prepped shaft showing above the top unless you tip the shaft or use a ferrule like in the picture.

Just make sure you absolutely use a shaft puller/extractor when taking the adapter off, do not twist and full adapters like you do on a iron/steel shaft. Otherwise just clean the shaft off after removal and as the others have said the only issue might be the Cobra adapter not being as deep as the tmade so there could be a little roughed up part of the shaft exposed unless you tip it some or are able to find a small ferrule to fit with the Cobra adapter. If you find a ferrule and its a little large, take some acetone and a rag and you can turn the ferrule down and smooth it out by hand

Can I change a 11-13 adapter to a 9.5-11 adapter on my TaylorMade SLDR 460 Driver?

No.  The adapter can only control how much adjustablity or the range e.g. +/- 2* or +/- 1.5*

But it's the head that determines where that range is centered or the base value.

So if you're currently able to get 11-13*  - that means you have a 12* head with a +/- 1.0* adapter.

The most you could do is go to 10-14* by switching to a +/- 2.0* adapter.  Or you could go to 10.5 - 13.5* with a +/- 1.5* adapter.

I assure you the newer Cobra adapters have a plastic collar/bushing (see pics).  I’m assuming Cobra added these for the same reason PING added the collard ferrules to their one piece adapters (add some cushion to that area  to reduce breakage).
If any epoxy touches that little collar during the orig install it will remain on the shaft when removing.  It is then difficult to save.  The original pic I posted showed me using a “other” collared ferrule which served 2 purposes that day, having a collar and covering a small amount of tip prep.    I’ve got no problem tipping a shaft a very small amount to hide some tip prep if I have some total length to spare.  I like the clean look and I am not good enough to feel the in a shaft that has been tipped 1/8” - 1/4”.
The reason I replied is I feel it would be more of a “No No” to tell someone to simply pull the adapter and put it back on possibly unknowingly w/o the collar insert.   And completely agree, always be careful who you take advice from.

Playing length depends on more than just the OEM - it can be different for different head models.   But for the vast majority of modern models, it will not change more than 1/4" (if at all).
