Atlanta - Golf Club of Georgia or Ansley

New poster but have read all the old Atlanta club threads. I'm in the Roswell area but work downtown (yeah, terrible - I know). I've narrowed my list of potential clubs to Golf Club of Georgia (including some privileges at Horseshoe Bend) and Ansley (Midtown and Settindown). I've already communicated with both clubs and am setting up tours for the family. I've played all the courses in years past and am mainly interested in a great facility conducive to the following:

Family atmosphere - I've got a 9 and 10 year old that enjoy playing on weekend evenings with me and we'd be occasionally utilizing pool, restaurants, etc.Good golf/facilities - I love the Ansley in-town course for its walkability and wish that GCG was more walkable. But I love what's been done for the GCG practice facilities.Good group potential - I'm an 8 and in my forties, so looking for a club with a decent group of golfers in that range.Business development appeal - i.e. willing to take a client/potential client and comfortable that the amenities/club are appealingI'd appreciate any current thoughts on the atmosphere at either of these clubs. What's the current vibe? Why one over the other based on what I'm looking for? Thanks!

where exactly are you in Roswell? East- west? how important is the social life? Swim teams, etc GCoGA does not have poolansley pool is in midtown (pretty sure) - might be a haul

More south, actually. Right near the Cobb line by the nature center so Settindown and GCoG's courses are both about 25 minutes away and Horseshoe Bend is about 20 minutes away.Not as important as the golf. We're in a swim/tennis neighborhood, but it'd be nice to have. Correct, but a membership there includes privileges at Horseshoe Bend.Correct as well, which all but eliminates family use but gives my wife and I access for business lunches or the occasional after work drink.In my mind, Horseshoe's course doesn't carry the same "wow" factor as GCG's courses or facilities.

It's really a question of "what don't I know" about GCG's perception in the golfing community.

IIRC, GCG was bought out of bankruptcy and is climbing back up in stature. There were some conditioning problems but those are getting fixed. The new clubhouse is pretty awesome. I feel like it is more of a men's golf club than a family country club.

Settindown is FAR, likely unplayable during the week unless you can leave your office at 3:00. I would say your are underestimating your travel time to both courses during commuting hours.

To be honest, if you are throwing around Ansley as a possibilty, why not look at ACC or Dunwoody? Both closer and at least comparable to Ansley from an experience and/or initiation perspective.

Be sure to inquire about waiting lists. With the economy I know some of the premium golf clubs have 5 year lists to go from social to full golf.

Agreed on the feel of a men's club at GCG, which is why the privileges at Horseshoe for the family make sense. Course distances are from home - I am flexible for work locations, but totally agree on trying to get anywhere (much less up 400) during commute hours.

I've looked at AAC (maybe you meant Atlanta Athletic instead of Atlanta Country) and Dunwoody and both are certainly closer to Ansley in terms of costs. AAC is certainly the next best. ACC is a bit more, 18 holes, and we know lots of people there and they are not, respectfully, our crowd or who we want the kids to be around. Unfortunately, ACC and DCC have really long wait lists and I'm not interested in only playing X times/year until we get full status.

I was thinking ACC, not AAC due to your South Cobb location. Is there no waitlist at Ansley? I figured they would have one as well, or is there just a waitlist for intown, and not Settindown? For some reason I think they have 2 separate memberships.

I dont know anyone at AAC, so cant comment on the membership. Overall you might be in a tough spot if you are looking for premium golf and low waitlist.

Join GCGA. If you join Ansley you will be subsidizing a major in town club operation that you will not get any value out of if you live out of town. The big value in joining Ansley is the in-town club. Settindown is just kind of a bonus.

Ansley you either join in-town (and get both) or you join Settindown. At least that was the options back a couple of years ago, In-town(as I live in the East Cobb area and working Sandy Springs) was not something I even wanted to look into, but I was told there is a waiting list for the in-town at that time.
