Titleist T400 irons

My thoughts as well. There is a quote from an unnamed Titleist employee: "Look, we already know what people are going to think when they see these loft specs, but they have to consider the target market and what we are trying to accomplish."

My thing is...Is he just saying the target market is stupid? A lot of people know 38* is pretty much a standard 8 iron. And for Titleist to call it the ultimate distance iron is again, assuming the public is stupid. You can bend a Mizuno MP20 PW to 38* (if it didnt snap right off) and it would go the same distance as a T400.

I like golf. A lot.

20* 5 Iron and a 38* Pitching wedge. What are we even doing anymore? I get that these are designed for distance but that is an absolute joke. This does absolutely nothing to help the high handicapper play better golf. you cannot convince me that a 20 handicap is going to be able to hit that 7 iron high enough with enough spin to be able to hold greens let alone the 20* 5 iron. Sure it's going to go farther but at what costs?

So my first thoughts when I heard about the T400 : "can't wait to try those, certainly fits my player profile" but then I see the specs. I thought my 43* PW was a little extreme but 38* ??

I'm critical because it's my job as a teacher and fitter to put the best golf clubs in peoples hands. Its really easy for a player to try these and think "wow, I love the extra distance" and not think twice about how this club is going to react once its on the actual course. This isn't me just being critical of Titleist. I'm a big Callaway supporter but I do not like the EPIC Forged irons for the average joe either. We sell a bunch of them because they just flat out go far but It's not actually helping scores improve.

Adding the two additional "wedges" says everything that needs to be said. The numbers on the sole are for vanity purposes only.

They took the T300 lofts, which were already very strong, and stamped one club down on everything.

I get that, and I'd be interested to see what actual spin, apex and decent angle numbers they have. Is that something you typically go over with your students? Do you ever take them out to a hole when they are deciding between say a Epic Forged and another GI club to see how they perform in holding a green or the height they reach. Of course these are all player dependent as well, you could give the highest lofted 7 iron to some players and they would still hit line drives with it. Me, I consider myself a high handicapper at 14.9, I have a relatively slow 7 iron swing speed of 75 to 77 MPH but I have no problem getting the ball high enough to hold greens, I also use the ProV1x, so that is a factor as well.

I just ask all these questions out of genuine curiosity, not to argue.

Maybe the target market is senoir golfers that have to hit an 8 iron now for the PW distance they used to get? Doesn’t bother me because I don’t worry about what distance my playing partner hits each club. When I get to the age where I hit my 8 iron 20 yds shorter than I’m used to I may consider irons like this. If you’ve been playing golf for 50 yrs it may be easier to associate a 160 yd shot with an 8 iron rather than a 5 iron.

This is where my father falls. He has been golfing for 40+ years now, plays to about an 8 handicap, has a bad back and needs all the help he can get. He is also good enough to know what "gapping" is and literally couldnt care less what the number on the bottom of the club says. His setup now is driver, 3w, 5w, 3h, 4h, 5h, 6h, 7-PW, GW, SW and a putter. The hybrids help with launch and forgiveness. Can you imagine if someone like him, who hits the ball shorter and lower than most people around his skill level, switched into these? You know that they wont launch as easily as a hybrid, plus he would be EXTREMELY confused about the number on the bottom of the club vs how far he is hitting it and in a bad way, because why would he switch to something other than what hes been used to for 40 years? It literally is just a change of a number and it isnt always a positive change.

I like golf. A lot.
