4 wood / 7 wood players, what do you play between 5 iron and 7 wood?

Hit em good

Recommended Posts

I'm working on filling this spot. What club(s) do you use between 5 iron and 7 wood?

My gaps are:

5 iron 160 - 165 yds

7 wood 190 yds

So I'm looking for a stock 175 yd club, that I can play for 170 - 180 range shots.

Hit em good

I hit pretty much the same distances as you and have a G400 4h in that slot. This year I’m replacing the 5 iron with a 5h as well

We're probably close to the same distance. My 5i is a 175-185 yard club, but it's probably a full club stronger lofted than your 5i. I jump up to a 7w at that point which is basically a 200 yard club. I can sometimes get a knuckleball with it up to 210, and poor strikes fall back to about 190. I'm putting a Ping G410 4h in the spot in between. There is some bunching at the top of my bag, but at my swing speed that's inevitable. Even though there is a lot of overlap between my 5i, 4h, and 7w in distance; the different trajectories and different results on mishits gives me options. If the pin is 190 and the trouble is long, I'm going to use the 5i and probably end up short. If the pin is 190 and it has to go 180 in the air, I'll take the 4h. If I'm on the fairway and the pin is 190 and needs to land soft, I might even try hitting the 7w soft because it goes so high.

4 Hybrid at 23* for me, although I don't have a 7wood as I never found one I hit a consistent distance.

I hit my 20* 3hyb 195 carry and can control the trajectory pretty well for my needs.

My carry at the top of my bag is :

Driver: 225-230

4 wood 210

3hyb: 190-195

4hyb: 180

5hyb: 170

I play a 7 wood. It replaces my 3 and my 4 iron. I grip way down on the 7 and get my 4 iron distance, which is 200-205. Full swing gets me 205 to 215, which is my 3 iron distance. There is more variability in the 7 wood distance than the iron it is replacing, but I continue to try and improve this.

I wouldn't go 9 wood because those lofts are often only a couple of degrees different than 7 wood, and they tend to sky the ball. But it looks like from your signature that you have solved the problem with the 23 degree rinky dink. If that doesn't work, there are a lot of good utility iron options that could blend easily with your MP-64s.

Since I play just three wedges, I have both a 4H and a 4i between 7W and 5i.

7W goes about 190, and 4H goes 180 to 185. The 4i - fit last season with a hybrid shaft - goes about 175 (and straight as an arrow).

7W launches highest, 4i launches lowest. If I go back to 4 wedges, I will probably leave either 4H or 4i at home depending on course.

I grip down as far as I can and still maintain a, "normal" grip. For me this is about an 1 inch from the end of the rubber. It took me some practice to do this well, but it has really worked well.

An idea I'm thinking about for 2020 is trimming 1/2 inch off of my 7 wood shaft to make it just a little easier. I might give up a little distance on the normal grip with a full swing, but I carry a 5 wood that I only hit full, so I'll be able to get that 215 or more shot when I need it.

I should add that I am a terrible long iron player, so my use of the 7 wood is also to help fix that rather serious flaw in my game.

4w - 7w - 23* hybrid (Romaro iBrid) - 4i - 5i and so on. I use 3 wedges (PW, 52* and 58*) so I have an extra spot in the bag. I throw the 4i in there for long par threes more than anything, but rarely hit it.

Sometimes use a 9w instead of the hybrid as well. I get quite a good gap between the 7w and 9w.

Driver - 250

4W - TS2 16.5* - 230-235

7W - TS2 21* - 215 carry (favorite club in bag)

4i - JPX 919 Hot metal - 200-205 carry

5i - JPX 900 forged (5i-PW) - 185 carry

I found that going to the GI version of my 4i really helped close the gap b/t 5i and 4i. My 900 forged 4i went 190-195 carry, so there was a gap created for me right at 200 yds.

Nothing. My 7 wood is around 200 yards and my 5 iron maxes out around 185 (23 degree club and I play my irons plus 1 inch). In the rare cases that I need to fill that gap, I just grip down a couple inches on the 7 wood...I feel really comfortable either stepping on or laying off the 7 wood and treat it almost like a wedge in that regard.

I have nothing between as well. 21* 7-wood goes about 200 and 25* 5-iron goes about 180 (both carry).

I only have 13 clubs so theoretically I could tighten the gap a bit. But from that distance I would just pick one of the two clubs based on where the better miss is. From that distance the reality for me is that clean contact and anything on the green / not in trouble would be a decent shot.

I am tinkering this off-season with this same situation. I had my 7-wood cut down a 1/2" and adjust the loft to it's highest setting. This is what I plan to start with. I am either going to order a 4 iron or 4-hybrid too. These new GI or Distance Players irons are so easy to hit, so I'll give the 4-iron a shot with a high launch, low spin shaft. If I do that, I'll just drop my 61* wedge out of my bag.
