Old True Temper Dynamic shafts

Recommended Posts

In irons, tapered Dynamic S of old should be about the same as modern tapered DGS, standard manufacturing tolerance aside. And, as raggal already mentioned, DG Pro is a different animal, not really like DG. Small added comment, I've always felt the Dynamics of 30+ years ago felt slightly stiffer than modern Dynamics/DG. Again, that could be manufacturing tolerance, or even them using something more than the standard Dynamic; I have a set of 78 Wilson Staffs that have tip lengths that don't quite line up with the True Temper specifications. such as I can tell while those shafts are installed, that is. LOL

In woods, older Dynamics will be stiffer. In 1996 or 1997, the tip trimming instructions for True Temper parallel wood shafts changed, resulting in softer shafts. You can see this in the Archived Shaft Data of the Dynacraft DSFI, Chapter 3.

On top of that, many older woods used taper Dynamic/DG shafts. Some folks feel the tapered Dynamics play a bit stiffer than the parallel versions. That could also be related to the "older dynamics seem to be slightly stiffer" thing mentioned above.

Te reason they are stiffer is because the walls of the shaft are thicker and that makes them heavier too by a little bit. One of the thing that make old Mac Pro Pel and Brunswick shafts so stiff and heavy

I have a set of irons, late 80's vintage with frequency matched DG 5.5. They're a bit of a load to swing especially compared to another set of similar vintage that are shafted up with Brunswick Precision FM 5.5. I'm assuming that this is mostly due to shaft weight, but perhaps the DG's are stiffer. I actually think that my Dynamic shafted woods in regular flex are a little bit easier to swing and launch a bit higher accordingly than the DG FM 5.5 iron shafts.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Most times shaft labels have either an "R" regular or "S" stiff.

If you can pop off the grip there may be a silkscreen code on the shaft butt by which identification might be made.

Another way is to measure the distance from the heel to the first shaft step. This method however can be inconclusive. Tip trimming unitized wood shafts back in the day was all over the map depending on the club manufacturer.

It's a little bit of work, but you can build a shaft deflection board. I modeled mine after the picture in a Macgregor catalog and built it using particle board and a 1 cm grid covered with clear contact paper so I can use dry erase markers. I buy a lot of clubs, so I use mine on a regular basis.

The last picture is from this last weekend. The black line is my S300 reference, I always start each session with an S300. The Green is an X shaft (boo) and the purple is a strong R or weak S, depending on how you look at it. I use a plastic shim to raise or lower the grip holder so each club starts off at exactly the same height and I put the strap of the weight bag where the wood meets the shaft. (The bag is full of 6-7 pounds of rocks). It isn't perfect, but it tells me what I need to know.

Interesting! That is much more rigorous than just reading the label.

Went back and checked and found a rating on the 3 wood, the 5 wood has the label wrapped over it. They are "mediums". Not sure how that translates to regular and stiff but it's something to go on for more research

e. further research suggests that medium = mature/senior flex, which is why I probably cannot hit them for the life of me, but hook the heck out of them. Off to try some new woods

@Stephen8802...I know this is an old post but I've been looking for info on True Temper shafts with the "T" marking...They are on a set , 2 thru 9 w/matching reg #s, of older Spalding RTJ jr Stainless Steel heads & also similar shaft on what looks like a home-made Ginty.

Also in that set was a Spalding "Wedge Tournament Model" also marked Stainless Steel w/a DynaTorque graphite shaft made by Babcock & Wilcox (seems an early graphite shaft maker that Wilson used....also the Pederson Bros). While I've not been able to date the Jones set, seems Maltby's guide has a Spalding Wedge Tournament Model in Stainless Steel in 1950. Grips don't tell me anything, they've been changed to Lamkin Jumbo's...

Anyway, from that TT shaft chart above, could the "T" actually mean it was a custom fit club/set?

I think @deejaid might be the guy with the answer to this. Someone had a T shaft, and I think it might have been him, and the T stood for Tour and was stiff. I'm not really sure what the T is.

Per the old Dynacraft DSFI (now from Hireko), the Dynamic T shaft was actually a regular flex shaft.  Their measurements of the shaft aligned pretty well with the eventual R designated flex Dynamic/DG.

Dynamic Shaft Fitting Index.  It's something Dynacraft came up with to help with shaft fitting, in the 90s, I believe.  Not sure if that was while Tom Wishon was there, or after him.

I'm sorry to be That Guy, but that is not true about DG shafts.  Dynamic Gold is just a weight sorted Dynamic.

There's some evidence that the old Dynamic iron shafts were actually a bit stiffer than modern DG.  The supposition is the tapered DG iron shafts were softened in the 90s at the same time the tipping instructions were changed for DG wood shafts.

I have found some .294 tip steel shafts marked t200,t300, and t500.

Are they Dynamic shafts?

Flexes?

Thanks

Hi Tex!

I remember seeing T flex being something that was used instead of R flex, in Ye Olde Days.  Actually learned of that by looking at Dynacraft's DSFI.

That said, I'm not finding the old tapered wood shafts listed in the oldest DSFI version I've got on my new laptop.  Might have to see if I can find that source....

Maybe time for the Wayback Machine to get some use...

Managed to pull up a 2004 copy of DSFI.  Which is kind of fun.

From the page for True Temper archived shafts, which is chapter 3.  If your shafts are .277, they're apparently regular flex DG.

Unfortunately, there was also a TT Lite tapered wood shaft, that was .294 tip in both regular and stiff.

It might come down to measuring step patterns....
