Golf club hire in Ireland

Advised to believe that Ireland is part of the UK, so posting here also.

Trying to organize a 3 week journey to IR, September 2020. The first week will be mostly golf from Galway north to Westport and Sligo, then back to Galway to drop the rented car. At Galway i may hire a full set of clubs to use the entire week, at about US$80.

Could play max 5 days, as all must be walking, it may be raining, must also find 'cheap' lodging, etc. Can't carry my own clubs.

Any experience or advice on club hire, car hire, best courses in that part of the world? Cannot pay US$250 for round of golf, half that would absolute tops. I'm a fair player, but getting on in years with crumbly knees and aching hip points. Otherwise, all good, and i will be solo all the way (unless i meet a lass/lady in a pub). Fortunately, i can speak the language, if the locals speak slowly!

An alternative would be to hire clubs at each course with cost unknown at this time.

Thanks all, for any input.

In terms of your clubs... if you're only looking at a couple of rounds of golf, why not avoid the hassle of bringing clubs at all. You can hire them from clubstohire.com (Dublin Airport) - best service, good clubs. They will drop them off for you and meet you to pick them up.

Rental cars are all the same - just decide if you are willing to drive manual or need automatic.

For your courses in your stated range and location: I would consider Galway Bay, Connemara, Westport and Enniscrone (being the best of the bunch imo). And if you want to drive a little further out Carne.

For what it's worth, Northern Ireland is part of the UK, Ireland is a separate and independent country. I mention it because if you travel and play in Ireland, people will get offended if you mention or say that they're part of the UK.

September is a great time to travel there, the weather can be very unpredictable and will rain on a moments notice, especially on the western coast; good rain gear for golf and travel is a must.

As for renting clubs, we will be there in August and we already have our clubs reserved. We're staying with close friends who are members of Dromoland but we will only have time for one round of golf and it's just not worth it to bring our own. My friend arranged all of it so I don't know which company he used but they're delivering the clubs to the golf course for us and picking them up there after were done, we don't have to deal with finding space in the rental car. Rental cars tend to be pretty small and once you get everyone and their luggage in, there wont be much space left for clubs. For example, when my wife and her friend had to ride to our friends house with my travel golf bag on their laps, thankfully i was the only one playing and our friends are only 30 minutes from Shannon airport. It's not cheap but worth it in my opinion, besides you will most likely have to pay to check them both ways and whatever that cost would offset it some.

Enjoy your trip, it's an amazing place to travel.

I said to the OP that all golfing questions re Ireland seem to end up here because its obviously adjacent and its courses are always linked with those of Northern Ireland, Scotland Wales and England.

With Brexit the difference will be more pronounced - and maybe even a border to cross. But there is still the common ground of great links golf.

I have always thought that this part of the forum should be called GB&I rather than UK.

regarding the post with the 14 yr old girl hitting the links while granny rested, i'd have to say that i have never in my many years golfing in a few countries, found any disrespect towards females, unless of course she knows nothing of golf. most golfers seem focused on their game, the external environment (rain/wind), and maintaining ordinary decorum, speed of play and golf etiquette.

the other thing of course is that most likely she will find few fellow teen-agers on the course any given day; truth is, most golfers are much advanced beyond 14 yrs. she could stop at the caddy shack and pick a young lad to carry the bag and maybe avoid a grumpy curmudgeon.

wish her well.

As someone posted above, rent clubs from Clubs for Hire. They have a good selection. Much less expensive than renting at the courses, and they will drop them off and pick them up at tour hotel or airport. I think they have several ocations. I used the one in Dublin

Clubs4hire.com. Suite 8/9, 23 Fashion City, Ballymount Road Upper, Dublin 24, Ireland.
