Driver Fitting for 14 yo boy

Hoping to learn what to expect, and any advice to help keep the cost down. My son is a freshman in high school and is starting his first golf season soon. He has grown 5 inches and added 30 pounds over the last 18 months (puberty, who know...), and so has outgrown his existing Driver--It is a cut down (42") Taylormade M2 HL (set to lowest loft of 11*) with a Fujikura Vista Pro 55g R shaft. Has been a great driver for him, but he feels the shaft is too "whippy"--Swing Speed is now about 103-5 and it launches too high with too much spin.

There's a local club fitter here in South Orange County, CA that says they will "work with" a junior golfer on price but wasn't too specific, which makes me a bit nervous. Would love to know what to expect, and any recommendations.

Thanks.

at the very least your going to want demo a new driver. A person used to go down to your golf store and whack drivers and get a feeling. Last time I tried this at pga superstore it was a nightmare. It was never great but needless to say there not friendly to demo clubs anymore. If you frequent a pro shop at a course ask them to help you.

the best option is to find a reasonable fitter and just pay them for a fitting. Ideally you are not pressured to buy anything. Sounds like the club fitter you found will be a good option if they don’t charge much for juniors. I would ask them upfront.

also if you want a new driver honesty how much do you want to spend? If you want to spend $500 and up to $350 for a shaft you might want to consider a used driver off eBay. If he’s swing 103-105 a stiff shaft is bet he might even be xstiff too.

preference should be fitter but if money is an issue you can do okay

Go to Cool Clubs in Irvine located at the Oak Creek GC and book a time with Josiah. Juniors are half price ($75 instead of $150) for driver fittings. Make sure they give you good, better, best options and don't just try and sell you on the $500 shaft upgrade.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Thanks for the good advice. We did go to Roger Dunn over the weekend and he hit a bunch of different Drivers from the used bin on their launch monitors. He really liked the look and sound of the Titleist TS3 and Cobra F9 Speedback. Disliked the Callaway and Ping drivers. Ran out of time to hit Taylormades.

Everyone says you have to get fit, and so I am just trying to gauge what I should reasonably be expected to pay for a fitting, and shaft and labor, etc. I know what stock drivers cost, but don't have a good sense on the rest. I did call Kyle at No Bogeys in Laguna Niguel, who says he does juniors fitting session for $50. Hoping to spend less than $400-500 all in, and just don't know if that is reasonable or not. Thx!

here is the thing if your getting a custom shaft it will be on top of what ever the driver costs. So a new driver is $500 and at least $200 for a shaft your looking at probably $750-$1000 for a driver. Not cheap at all.

if you can find a demo day somewhere they usually have trackman and and do free fittings so you know actual numbers don’t fall in love until you see numbers. You will actually get a decent fitting doing this and learn a lot. You might be able do better at an actual fitter but I would say it will cost about 50% more after your done. I just did a fitting and the cost was about 50% more after you add in custom shafts.

you can also buy last years model used it will save a ton of money off of eBay and Is a good way to go with a growing kid.

also should add that getting fitted is more important the better you are the more you will benefit. If your not a great ball striker the less your benefit from it.

If your an average ball striker you can probably get away with off the rack driver and be pretty close to guy who got a fitting. The good ball striker is a different story an off the rack solution might be really bad for them.
