Biggest purchase letdown you where convinced would work?

We’ve all been there. Purchased a club without hitting or trying it and it turns out to be a failure, not a huge surprise.

But what about clubs you’ve demoed and hit multiple times, or maybe even been fit for? Something you where certain would work?

My worst was the Taylor Made ARC putter. I tried it 3-4 times on a demo green and holed everything with it. Take it in the course and couldnt even hit the hole from 3 feet. Shocking. Went straight on eBay the same day!

Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal irons with the C-Taper Lite X-stiff shafts. I was fit into these before I knew anything about club fitting. Based on what i know now, there is no way I should have been in a X. Also, the fitter fit be based on "charts" and we did not review any of the numbers/stats from the launch monitor. I struggled with getting any sort of decent trajectory with these shafts.

I will do you one better. How about getting fit for a driver, deciding you know better, so you purchase the driver that you hit worse than almost all of the ones during the fitting. You even buy it with a $400 upgraded shaft that breaks on the very first swing. And even though it was poor workmanship Taylormade refused to warranty the shaft. So I purchased another $400 shaft for a driver I hit like garbage during the fitting. I then spent a year trying different shafts and setups because I was still determined that it was the right driver for me. That was my experience with the Taylormade M1 440. The best thing I ever did for my golf game was when I finally sold that **** driver.

Nike Covert 1.0 Tour. The club wasnt a complete bust (Cool Story bro) time

Golf Game sucked back then... never bought a club brand new ever. Went to the Nike Demo, knew nothing about Launch Monitors back then as well.

Walked into the demo, Nike people, flags merchandise blah blah. Walk up to the fitter (Nike) guy and we go through the hitting process, match the shaft, match the loft etc.... I go on to pump out 108mph swing speeds I dont know the ball speeds mind you, The Carry 275, total 295, 293 blah blah pushing almost 300. Guy turns around and says you are the farthest I have seen all day, here is a sleeve of Nike Balls (mind you he wasn't giving it to everyone).

I waffled back and forth and pulled the trigger, customer, and 4 weeks later $499 as well...... couldnt Not replicate on the course what I did at the demo EVER. Could not even keep the ball on the planet it was 50-100 yards slices 2 fairways over..... dumped it grabbed a 910D2 from the used rack about 6 months later and have not swung and actually took the shaft out and currently using it in my 915D3......

    1) Nike CT 1.0 not a bad club... but the adjustable hosels just started getting popular and the horrible switching of the head back and forth and a horrible swing it was terrible

    2) Terrible golfer to begin with

    3) too high flight so set it from 10.5 to 8.5 not realizing the effects of 3* open face...... slice and blocks right.....

painful expensive lesson......6 years later still I have never bought a club new again.....

back years ago when I was more a club ho, I got fit for ping i20 irons and I was hitting them very well right from the start, towering long irons. Few months later I saw the Adams cmb irons at my local store and couldn’t resist the urge, traded my brand new i20 irons for them. Got ripped off I’m sure but those cmb irons didn’t compare to how well I was hitting the i20’s. I know a lot of people on the forum liked the cmb but didn’t work out for me, hated them.

Bought a Ping G400 driver after hitting it a few times indoors. Got it to the course and hated it, hit my old G10 way better. No comparison. I sold it shortly after and continue to hit my G10 better than anything else I try. If it ain't broke.

I have one that really sticks out and it was a Callaway X2 Hot 3 Hybrid. I had tried a friend of mine's out on the range and played it one round and was lights out with it. Bought one for myself and all I could do was hook it. Never could replicate that round that I used my buddy's. Ended up giving it to my wife's Uncle and he still has it in the bag.

I also bought a used Nike Covert 2.0 from Golf Galaxy. I hit several of their used drivers and none of them were even close to how well I was hitting the Covert. Got it home and could not even get the ball off the ground. Low hooks that wouldn't get 2 feet off the ground. I have tried it several times and always the same result.

In the opposite direction, I never even hit a G400 Max and ordered one that was delivered to the house. Put my favorite Diamana shaft in and it was love at first tee shot.

The PING G2 and G30. It's kinda odd as I have owned and like several PING drivers (G15 for 4 years, Anser 2 years, G400Max going on 2 years).

I tried every shaft/loft combo with both and couldn't come close to hitting them as good as what I had in the bag. At the time, I desperately wanted to love each of them.

Tried TX and S in two different driver heads. Never got launch and spin right. If it spun right, it launched too low. If it launched right, spin wasn’t better than a cheaper option. Also found counterbalance to make me miss left more, in an “anti-left” shaft.

Thank god they have good resale...

Guess I need to add to my original post. Single Length Irons. Had a proper fitting and they where great, really thought I could get them to work. In the long clubs it was great but anything below an 8 iron was almost impossible to control the trajectory and length.

Sold then after about 6 months and keep seeing them appear on eBay!

For me it was actually the a Titleist T3 with a 6.5 Even Flow. My gamer for 6 years had been a 913 D3 with a Whiteboard 73x. Previous to that I had gamed a 909 D3 with the same shaft. Needless to say I was a Titleist driver fan and kept waiting for them to come out with something I liked better than my 913. The 915 and 917 didn’t fit the bill. I was excited when the new TS line was announced and bought one without even demo’ing. I was sincerely disappointed and dumped it after a few months. I still have the 913 but gamed the Mizzy ST190G with Atmos Black 60x all last year. I have an ST200G on the way with a Ventus Black 70x.
