Titleist ProV1/X Swing Speed Requirements?

Recommended Posts

Personally, I've never played the best with these balls ProV/X). I swing about the same with the driver. On the course, I feel like they fly lower off the irons, and on full swing irons I think some of the higher flying balls stop just as well. It may all be mental though - ie I just like the other flight / trajectory more and swing better as a result. The peak height vs speed is the only thing I can really think of and many may disagree.

On the flip side, many top juniors and LPGA players swinging in this range play ProV/X. Thus, it's hard to imagine that generally speaking/on average the ball is hurting them due to lack of 120 mph driver ss. They are playing for a lot more than I am.

A ball should be fit from green to tee! You need to find a ball that fits what you want a ball to do. Urethane for control! The reason why a lot of LPGA players use ProV1X is because it launches higher and spins more. Launch and spin are what you need to look for, not distance off the tee. This game is about control and accuracy. I am a low ball launcher/spinner and need height and spin. That is why look at ProV1X, BS XS/RXS, TM Tour Response to help with what I want/need a ball to do.

Good summary. Have you been able to try the new XS or RXS yet? Loved the 330s but not the last couple ax’s so went to ProV1x.

Pretty much what Golf64 and Erky said.

I play the X with a 88-90 mph swing and it is no shorter off the tee than any other ball I've tried. But my swing speed on shots around the green is the same as most scratch players, and the ball performs better rhan any of the others.

Almost all players that play with a RXS or RX would be better of playing the BXS. For most amateurs, you can't give them too much spin. The softer balls are designed to spin less off irons and give you more distance on your mid to long irons. For most players they'd be better off trading 4-5 yards per club for a few hundred RPM's of spin.

This part of Bridgestone marketing confuses the $#@& out of me. I was fit in the past for XS and don’t swing over 105. Now they tout Freddie in the RXS and he’s over that. I think it may spin less than the XS so maybe is a good fit but dang they are confusing with their marketing to me.

I'll second what @wfrogge1 says in the above post #13.
My wife is in her 60's with a high single digit handicap index. She, swings the driver in the 70-75 mph range. and plays the Pro V1x. Several times a year she'll try another ball but has yet to find a ball that goes as far as the Pro V1x or spins as much for her.

They're using swing speed as a proxy for skill. It's not a one to one relationship but there is strong correlation between swing speed and skill at golf. In general the lower swing speed players are going to miss more greens short than long, so having a ball with less spin off irons that will fly further and roll onto greens will tend to be more beneficial than one that stops on its distance. In general lower swing speed players are going to both hit down on the driver and add loft, so reducing driver spin will be very beneficial to them. The ball speed differences between a soft and hard ball, get less and less below 105, so you don't see a ton of ball speed pickup by going firmer.

That's all true on aggregate, however it's not true for everyone. My miss tends to be the low spin duck hook out of the toe with a driver. With a slightly higher spinning ball, I might keep it in the air and on the planet. The spin drops too low and it's godawful. I also hit my irons far enough and would rather miss short than long most of the time, so even though I don't swing over 105, playing one of the higher spinning balls makes more sense for my game.

This is spot on and what I've heard directly from Mike Mahoney at Team Titleist events. And I'm in the same swing speed area as you.

I've just got back into the game and have been ball testing since Oct. I've had a ton of love the Srixon Z and XV, something about that Spin Skin makes me feel like I have a ton of control on pitching and chipping, but it also feels a bit strange off the putter, like I need to get it a bit more effort.

The '19 BX is great off the tee, but feels a bit slippery chipping, and it a bit too firm off the putter. I will give the '20 version a go later this week. The '20 BXS is great around the greens, but sluggish off the putter.

The Pro V1x is a bit firm, it's winter here in the Mid Atlantic, it might be better in warmer weather, but comes off the putter a bit firm.

So I will stick with the ProV1 for now, plays really well in the cooler air, a bit slippery with chips but feels great and does not click, but the most important thing and why I'll prolly stick with it is how it comes off the putter. It's such a distinct feeling, it seems to pop off the putter, not like a marshmallow, or a rock, but just right. This gives me great confidence putting and that's probably everyone's most important stroke. So yes, for me, I picked my ball from putting green to tee.
