Removing grips by air

Recommended Posts

Can someone give me an idea about what pressure I should set my compressor to remove grips. Should it be high, medium or low. It seems I have been blowing up the few I have tried. Probably too much pressure

Thanks in advance

It depends upon how the grips were put on. A lot of times if they were put on the traditional way with 2 sided tape they'll just explode because of the glue from the tape holding most of the grip to the shaft. If you used regular masking tape or no tape at all under the grip 60 PSI will usually get the job done but even if you go higher they won't explode.

Like they said, trying to get glued on grips off with air is tough. For me, it's much easier to just use the long, slender grip removal tool you buy online. With that and a little solvent, can get most grips off in a minute. Just slide it under the edge of the grip, start to pour solvent down the grip and just work your way around. If it's a club that I didn't grip, I might give the air way a try just to see if it was in fact put on by air by someone else.

I recently did same and a lot of tape remained stuck inside the grip. The grip removal tool and mineral spirits works better but takes more time and effort...but worth it if you want to save the grips.

I use a knife.

Seriously though, I am really good with a grip gun and solvent. Most grips take seconds. I personally blow my grips on and off, but I never fart around with trying to blow glued grips off with compressed air.

I just pulled a Scotty Cameron grip, because it was nearly new, and NOT cheap.

I have a blow gun from Home depot that fits inside the hole in the grip, and doesn't leak. By varying trigger pressure, you can control how much pressure you deliver.

Squirt some solvent through the hole, then a little compressed air, and start twisting back and forth at the butt end. Short bursts of air and twisting until it eventually comes loose. Takes 2-3 minutes, and is a fair amount of work.

If the grips are put on with air it takes a second or 2 to blow them off. Like others said if it's 2 face taped then use a grip spoon.

I have taken taped grips off with air by squirting solvent in the end of the grip and using burst of air to work the grip loose. That's usually if it's only 1 or 2 clubs.

Over the weekend I regripped my buddies new Muiras and it was easier just taking them off with a spoon and solvent. Being new the grip was able to be taken off with out messing up the grip tape.

On a side note I put Super Soft wrap grips on the set mentioned above and damn did they suck putting on. I had to use air and a crap load of solvent to install them.

Unlike others I have a much better result blowing off grips. My success rate of blowing off a grip and not ruining it(stretching or blowing it up) is about 75%. The only exception is most Winn grips where it drops below 50% and I usually don't bother trying anymore. I set my compressor at 45psi. In general Ping installed grips come off really easy.

45-50 psi will take care of most issues. Also, if you're using air, take an old piece of 3/4" or larger diameter garden hose about 7-8 inches long and split it in half. Place this around the grip you are attempting to remove. This can save you a blood blister or worse...

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

Krt22, I only try to blow them off with the compressor and if I can't I just cut them off. I don't have the tube connected to my airgun I have a piece that can slide down over the grip. I slide the tube on leaving an inch or two of the end of the grip exposed. Then insert the airgun nozzle into the grip air hole ensuring a tight seal and hit the trigger. Sometimes I need to work the end of the grip a bit to help loosen it up(the reason for the 1-2 inch gap) and most come off pretty cleanly. The lower air pressure seems to help from blowing the grip up two fast and avoids stretching them out. For installing/removing my personal grips I blow them on over blue masking tape. Back when I was using .580 core grips on .660 shafts I didn't use any tape at all. I don't use any solvent for either of the things I just outlined and have never had a problem.

Up until I mentioned myown grips I was describing how I save grips installed with tape/solvent. Other than Winns my success rate is pretty good asi mentionedabove

20-50 psi. I used a heat gun prior to blowing them off. Heating the grip loosens the adhesive on the th ape from the grip and allows the air to separate them. I have only had failures on super thin grips.

  • 2 months later...

Ok figure better to just add on here than start a new thread. I have Golfpride Multicompound midsize that I put on an eight iron a couple months ago. Silly me didn't measure again(I was doing a reshaft), and it is too long, so I need to cut down the club. Hoping to put the grip back on since it is brand new. It was put on traditionally(double-sided tape, solvent).

I tried to practice using air on an older club, but I could not get the grip to react at all. There was what seemed to be sufficient air pressure when I hit the trigger for the blow gun on its own, but when I put it against the club, it was as though there was nothing happening. It seemed to be losing air elsewhere. I used an inflating needle, and a couple of other types of ends, but nothing seemed different. Any thoughts?

I use the nozzle that is used to inflate stuff like beach balls. With some patience and a bit of twisting on the end of the grip most grips will loosen enough to get started and then come off. I can save most rubber grips about 80% of the time regardless of method of install. Takes some practice but it’s not hard. Pings are up to about 95% which I put down to the spiral tape for some reason. Winns are below 50%. The Multicompound shouldn’t be too difficult once you get it started.
