Old Timers (early to mid 90's) Where are They Now?

During the 90's I got big into watching golf on TV, almost 8 hours every weekend, so knew quite a few names/personalities.

Figured I'd start a post to bring up some of those guys who used to be prominent, but never really hit it big. Feel free to update on what my guys are doing now, and also add anyone you were fond of who never quite "made it". They may have won a few a few times on Tour, but never quite broke through by winning something big?

I think there have been a couple what happened to DiMarco threads up in the last couple of months but far as I know he was on the radio, was hurt, playing some Champions Tour probably covers it.

Lickliter was showing up on the web.com quite a bit, still seems to get out there although he doesn't really need to.

Other guys - you may be the only person wondering! I mean before them, what about Dan Pohl? I think he hit like 50 balls in the water on 12 at Augusta and it's like the members threw a bag over him and took him away in a van somewhere.

Both Franco and DiMarco are currently playing on the Champions Tour. DiMarco finished in top 50 in the Schwab Cup on the Champions tour last year. Franco has a couple of wins on the Champions tour. Glasson played the Champions tour through 2018. Lickliter should be playing some Champions tour events this year as he turned 50 in late July 2019.

I can chime in here. One late Sunday afternoon at Torrey, Phil and Frank we’re paired up together, and come the 18th hole, one silly young college aged fan screamed out, “Hey Frank! Lick Phil’s balls!!” A thousand dudes laughed like crazy. Phil chuckled. It was a proud moment to witness.

You often hear that it's bad luck for Phil that he played in the Tiger era, but the guy it was REALLY bad for is DiMarco.

Phil finished second to Tiger in only one major, and he has five other major wins, so who really cares whether he has five or six, except maybe Nick Faldo?

But DiMarco finished second to Tiger twice, and didn't win any others (although people forget that he was also in a playoff for the 2004 PGA Championship, won by Vijay). The difference between zero majors and two majors is huge. And nobody else finished solo second to Tiger more than once in a major, although Ernie Els finished T2 twice.

A strangely detailed memory. Are you sure you were just a witness?

Carlos Franco. That guy was like a legend because he would show up. Light up a smoke and hit the first tee. My kinda player.

Bill Glasson - injuries and marital issues with ex-wife Courtney eventually lead to a split.

Now, life is better after marrying Shelley in 2015.

Add in Johnathan Kaye, Len Matice, Hugh Royer III, Garett Willis.

Kaye never really got past the money clip on the fly incident did he?! Haha.

Maybe he indulged in a little too much green that day, and I don't mean cash.

For some reason I found that list hilarious. When I saw Dimarco in there all I could think was how mad he’d get if he saw the list. Maybe RDD can shoot him a link !

Duffy is playing the Champions Tour quite a bit and is now doing those commercials for Tour Edge Exotics

In fact I recall all the guys on your list have played some Champions events in the past year or so. On your list I think Duffy has been the most successful

I can say something on Jarmo, fellow Scandinavian. Playing on the European Senior Tour, doing rather fine. Has tried to qualify for champions without success(Robert Karlsson, bigger scandinavian name of the same generation made it on the Qschool, will play on the Champions towering above everyone). Jarmo has tuned down his image last years, no quirky sunglasses or stuff like that. But still a colorful player and person.

I seem to remember Mattiace getting really badly injured never to be really seen again, he seemed to be on leader boards quite a lot in the late 90's early 2000's

It's rumored that Duffy Waldorf would promise patrons candy and funny stories to follow him around the course at tournaments.

He was probably one of those guys who got swallowed up by the distance boom post 2003. Same thing with Weir, that Masters came at the absolute last minute for him.

I think most are trying to get some game back after Oberholzer cornered the infomercial market.

How about Morris Hatalski? He made it to a Golf Digest cover on weight shift on the PGA Tour in the late 80s.

And the best swing in golf: Tom Purtzer.

We were lucky Seve and Greg Norman were around in those days.

I will pay tribute in this thread to my instructor, Bob Lohr, a PGA Tour winner. Who, in a very little known fact, holds the PGA Tour record for consecutive GIR at 51. Here’s to you, “Mr 51”!

A physician friend of mine plays in this fundraiser event each year which attracts support from a bunch of the Champions guys. He got paired with Toledo saying he was a very nice guy. Spoke highly of Singh as well.

Esteban Toledo has been playing on the Champions Tour full time since 2013. Pgatour.com is a good source of information.

Here's my list. In another reality, all three could have won a major or two.
