Overlap or interlock

I have tried comparing these on 2 different range sessions. I have used interlock since I started playing golf, and decided to try overlap. I am very very right handed, find a slice but typically play a fade from the tee. My mess is usually over the top, but I also get very Hanzi with chips and putts.

What I have found is that I’m going over lap, my hands are able to release more and I am hitting baby draws and straight shot from the tee. I even have better putting stroke by changing to this as it takes more of my right hand out of the stroke I feel and help reduce grip pressure. With irons and woods I feel the club release more, just curious if anyone else has tried this and how much of a honeymoon it will be?

I lose a club distance using overlap.

Since I started playing golf, I was taught an interlock grip. One year ago, I decided to drastically change my swing, and the first thing I did without even asking my new coach is to use an overlapping grip. Since then, I started playing with huge consistency, not only with my driver but also all my irons. 

I have putted with reverse overlap for years but have recently stumbled upon overlap which feels/seems more stable.

My first instruction book was a Nicklaus book so I've always been interlock. Putt with an overlap though.

Total opposite here. Interlock was key to better wrist c-o-c-k, better release - switched several years ago after overlap for 40 years. Reverse overlap for putting.

I grew up being taught interlock by my uncle. Had no idea about overlap until I was 16. It’s been 20 years since I made the switch and started hooking the snot out of the ball. I love it.

Small hands - interlock.

All others - overlap.

I have medium/large sized glove hand and overlap feels 100x better for me. Interlock hurts my pinkie after a bit of hitting balls. Interesting though as a lot of the top players (Tiger, Koepka, Mcilroy, Fowler, Thomas) use interlock though. I feel like majority use interlock on tour..

M Size Glove here. When I first started playing, I used overlap as it was what my dad had taught me. But as I played more and learned more about my swing and physical characteristics interlock fit perfectly.

I wear Medium gloves. Sometimes Cadet so I guess they would be considered smaller. I started with interlock, but moved to overlap with much better success. My hands/fingers are strong though. I think that makes the difference.

I have tiny hands for a man of my considerable proportions. For whatever reason i just cannot use interlock, it just doesn't work for me and i can't hold the club properly. Have always used overlap.

Putter i use a left hand low method i learned from watching Jim Furyk like 15 years ago

I have medium sized hands but short fingers. Have never felt comfortable with interlock. Golf pro showed me overlap in the mid-90s and have used it ever since.

I agree with OP's comments about overlap "freeing" the release. My default shot went from a fade/slice to a baby draw when I switched grips. Actually fought a hook b/c I had too strong of a grip as a way to deal with the slice, and it took some time to trust that the release would come if I used a more neutral grip.

I agree that interlock helps avoid over rotation of club head. If I'm ever trying to hit a big fade or border line slice around a tree for example, I will interlock as I normally play overlap. I'll also use interlock out of really deep or thick rough to help stop the club face from shutting down.

That's my story too....growing up in the 1960's, Nicklaus was the Only person I knew that used interlock...Vardon grip was prevalent by a large margin.

Once you get used to both, for most people the end result is negligible. Each have their pros and cons. I've used both. Smaller hands, I would recommend interlock in most cases.

I wear a L glove, but it feels like the pad below my right thumb fits more snug & secure over my left thumb when I interlock. My right hand doesn't feel as secure on the club when I overlap; feels like my hands want to separate during the downswing. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

A few years back, when I was a clubmaker for Golfsmith here in Dallas, Lee Trevino used to come in pretty regularly when he was in town. Always buying lead tape, grips, extensions etc...liked doing his own club work...One day he mentioned that he had changed his grip from a strong 3 knuckle overlap to interlock..WTH?...That floored me, changing his Hall of Fame grip later in life? Had to ask why?

He said, that as he had got older, he had much less lateral motion/leg drive and was now more rotation and the strong overlap was causing big hooks...said that For Him, the interlock provided a later hit that worked better for his now more rotary/less lateral swing...I was super impressed by 1. He is still trying to get better at his age. 2. His insight and understanding of what happens when you 'do this and you get that'. btw, he has short stubby fingers.

I guess my point would be that at least according to Lee, it is easier to retain the angle with an interlock grip vs overlap...my personal experience agrees.

Back in the day when I used a lot of lateral motion (remember the reverse C position anyone?) I was more of a hangle dragger rather than using torque/rotation...lot of bad backs then too

i must be in the minority here where it really doesnt matter. i am a medium large cadet glove. ive changed on range sessions. played rounds with overlap then interlock. as long as the rest of the grip is the same in terms on the shaft placement in the hands and the grip strength, the swing is the same for me. results are the same. almost frustratingly so because i'd like to see an advantage with one. overlap feels better for whatever reason. feels better pre swing. its where my hands naturally go, so that's what i have been using.
