TM ventus blue vs. Velocore ventus blue?

Recommended Posts

The tip section in the made for shafts do not have velocore. Check out The Ventus Black thread towards the end of it. Fujjikura has been posting in it and answering questions.https://forums.golfwrx.com/discussion/1789613/the-new-ventus-black/p14

Fujikura quote

"The STOCK shafts used in the new TaylorMade products is a Ventus part without VeloCore Technology (no Pitch 70 ton or 40 ton in the bias core) that we worked in conjunction with TM to optimize the performance for a wide range of golfers. Please refer to TaylorMade for specs.

note: TaylorMade is the ONLY company offering ventus without VeloCore as their stock shaft. And their custom upgrade shafts are the aftermarket versions, hence the upcharge. So if you see a ventus part at another OEM it is our aftermarket part with VeloCore and carries a $350 MSRP. the only exception is Tour Edge has a Ventus with "4T Core" which is same construction as VeloCore, but without the $$$ Pitch 70T material. 4T core is all high-mod 40 Ton in the full length bias core."

I was going to post about the same thing. I tried the SIM driver at a demo day and the salespeople were all happy about saying Ventus is a shaft option for the standard price ($800 in Singapore) but after checking the website I realised it isn't really 'the' Ventus shaft is it.

I am thinking it may be better to get an M4, or one of the models from the last of years, and put the real ventus shaft in it. It would end up cheaper and maybe better performance. Would anyone agree with this?

I will have a real Blue in my 3w this week and a made for in my driver. So I can give opinions but no direct comparison of value. If I have anything of substance to report I will do so.

Driver: Ping G410 LST (Diamana ZF)
5w:  Titleist TS2 (Ventus Blue)
3H: Titleist 818 H2 (Ventus Blue HB)
or 3i: Cobra King Utility 21* (Tour AD DI)
4-P: PXG 0311T (KBS $-Taper)
Wedges: 51* Edel TRP, 55* Edel DVR, 60* Cally MD5
Putter: PXG Mini Gunboat H

The Stock Ventus is what you would expect. Whippy junk that is a completely different shaft than the real Ventus Blue. The profile is about the same but the materials not even close. I've been testing a limited edition gold Ventus Blue and it's really good. You just have to tip it properly.

I have a hunch the 'made for' Ventus Blue for TM is just the old Fujikura 'Pro' profile from years prior which they made in many 'made for' forms - Cobra F7/F8 and Callaway Epic to name a few. They just painted it blue and slapped the Ventus name on it for TM. It's not a terrible shaft but it's a 'better fit for everyone' aka softer to flex shaft and is nothing like the VeloCore Ventus nor is it anything like the 2018 and newer shafts Fujikura has been putting out with their ENSO machine data like the Pro 2.0, ATMOS TS, Motore F1/F3, Ventus, etc.

Of course it can work for players, especially those with slower swing speeds. My info is geared for people here or anyone that swings it faster than 95mph. They will get more out of the real ventus. Whether that "more" is worth it is up to the player.

It's deception and it's done by most OEM's. Unfortunately shaft companies do it because they need the revenue. Ive spoken to 4 different companies and none of them like doing it.

The premium aftermarket product says "VeloCore" down towards the tip, the OEM Taylormade version does not. If you're shopping used, assume that any shaft that is sub $200 and does not have the "VeloCore" graphic pictures anyway is the cheaper version. Obviously be extra careful around shafts that are equipped with Taylormade adaptors/grips.

I know this if from a while ago but I just saw this thread now. I wish shaft companies overall would just own up to it and put in a true "stock" shaft like Callaway has with their EvenFlow Greens and Srixon with the Miyazaki lines or opt for a lower-tier upgraded/no charge shaft like a standard Tensei. Every shaft OEM has a bottom or mid-low tier shaft they offer that has some performance benefit over a stock shaft but doesn't cost a lot. It would be so easy to run with the Atmos standard lines like they had in the M4 and like Cobra has, different paint scheme but it works. That is why I tend to favour Ping and Titleist "stock" shafts as they are very transparent. They are real, there's no monkey business. Sure they might not be the hottest shafts on the market at the time but you can be assured you are getting something of decent quality and no smoke and mirrors.

Well thats Taylormade's game...marketing.

Do I think the overall 'game' Taylormade plays with their consumers is terrible? Yes

Do I understand what they're doing with this shaft line? Yes - Do I hate it? Not in theory, but in execution...yes.

In short...dont pee on us and tell us it's raining. Just tell us it's pee...really good performing pee...and we'll be happy. lol

Taylormade goes through way more inventory than Cobra or Mizuno. Those two smaller companies were able to offer the ATMOS as a stock shaft - Cobra the real deal, and Mizuno a slightly watered down version but still good - to consumers in their 2019 drivers. There's no way Taylormade is going to offer a real deal shaft in their drivers. Their bottom line would suffer per unit and they know they can strongarm ANY shaft manufacturer into doing their bidding and taking the lucritive contract. Honestly IMO - Fujikura hit it big with the Ventus and Taylormade knew it - and Taylormade strongarmed their way into a line of made-for shafts hedging that the shaft hype would continue and it paid off for them as it did, on tour.

I am more a fan of Callaway's model of offering at least one REAL shaft per model year release that's paired with their offerings - even though it might not be the 'main' shaft that's on the clubheads on the retail racks. Example; Callaway for the Epic Flash offered the Tensei Blue AV as a stock option, but the 'off the rack' clubs had the Evenflow Green in them in most stores.

Just IMO, anyway.

Agree it is all marketing, and Taylormade has always been one to push the envelope in that regard, but don't delude yourself into thinking other manufacturers don't do it. Just off the top of my head.

Callaway - Hazardous T800 in Epic

Titleist - Every hybrid shaft ever (diamana, made for etc.) The tensei "Pro" in the the 818 H1 was crap and not anything like a real tensei. Plus Titleist for years was the king of Made for Diamana shafts in their drivers.

If we wanted to, I guarantee we could find examples from every manufacturer.

I would argue Taylormade Stock offereings this year are in line with what you said regarding Mizuno/ Callaway.

Ventus - Made for knock off

Diamana S Limited - I think is real? I am not familiar with this shaft

Hazardous Smoke green - Watered down Hulk

Also you can do the the Tensei CK (Not pro) for no up charge. This is a real shaft just not top of the line in Tensei series

Taylormade had the Atmos Red, though. I also don't buy for a second that Fujikura (for example) wouldn't want to play ball if a company such as Taylormade contacted them and said, "hey we have X million units of drivers and fairways we are planning to make for release. We guarantee these as these are minimum ordered shipments to companies," that Fujikura wouldn't cut down the cost for them. I don't care how good a local fitter or fitting business is, they aren't even in the same universe as units sold of a stock shaft. Don't forget that even at say $30 per driver shaft, Fujikura is likely making at least 40% on that too. Sure its great to sell it to the local fitters for 100%, but selling say $8 million of profit at a 40% markup is still going to dwarf the maybe $1,000,000 in profit from all of Club Champion and TrueSpec combined (if we are being really generous in terms of sales) at 100% markup.

I have hit both versions. Hands down Velocore version is what you want.

One additional Note: If it doesn't say Velocore it's not the real shaft.
