Bettinardi experts - Tell me about this putter I just bought

So I was in PGA Superstore and was browsing through the used putters when I ran across this carbon Bettinardi 3 Step Jam. After rolling it with my own TP5x balls, I determined I couldn’t leave there without it. It felt so good that it’s basically ruined all other putters for me. My question is regarding whether this is a limited run of putters or a wide release. I’m not familiar with Bettinardi putters but was able to determine the model on my own. The putter is in mint condition. I’m trying to determine if I got a solid deal on it, or overpaid. They said they didn’t really know how to price it. What’s the ball park on market value for this putter?

It's limit release for sure, not a standard release.

Cool, thanks for that. Slightly different paint fill too. I’m wondering if it was maybe just a custom order rather than an actual release?

Oh it definitely went home with me. I talked them down to $400 out the door. I honestly don’t see it leaving my possession any time soon and I’m thinking about putting it in the bag. Just curious whether or not I got in it at a decent price.

I’m recent to the Bettinardi game but I would say it’s a great deal. Mainly because I know that neck isn’t a recent general public release. The three step jam isn’t a general release either so I’d say yes. And definitely game it, I just recently got a BB1F limited and it’s the best putter I’ve ever had

One other question... will the black PVD finish help prevent rusting? I've bought a gun oil cloth to clean it with and I would always dry it after every round. Just curious how much I'm going to have to baby it if I end up gaming it.

Yeah, I'll take one tonight when I get home. None of the characteristics of this putter are things I've ever gravitated toward in the past. But it just looks so perfect at address. I've always been a sight line guy too, but literally started experimenting with naked putters like a week ago. So it kind of felt like fate when I happened across it.

$400 is a really good deal if this is in fact a limited run Hive build. Did it come with the head cover though?

A fair question indeed. I enjoy collecting also. I have a putting mat that I spend at least 30 minutes on per night during the winter, so it's fun just to have in there. If nothing else. But it's highly likely it's going in the bag once the weather turns.

If you search for Three Step Jam in the registry, there's only 9 that come up. I'm guessing the Jam went from "Three Step" to "3 Step" at some point? The ones on the registry have different neck, milling and paint fills on each. Only one of those 9 has the same neck as mine, and that one has a sight line on top. So it appears to be at least somewhat rare. Unfortunately the guy didn't include the custom headcover that would have originally been with it. Overall I'm very happy, even if it isn't that rare of a find. Because it just looks and feels so freaking good. I'd much rather pay $400 for this putter over a OTR Scotty.

Yeah with headcover it could be worth upwards of $650. Betti with that face do feel really sweet. Much better value than Scotty.

Looks close to the retail Studio Stock 11. I had 1 to demo for about 3 rounds. I putted well just didn't like the curved neck look, even though you can't tell at address.

Effin beautiful stick man, imagine that thing banging around some used putter bin, that's just wrong. Is it pretty face balanced with that neck shape? The most recent putter I made was basically modeled after this exact shape.... just less beautiful and more caveman.

Hi CoreyHR,

To protect it from rust, I'd recommend Eezox. It's a coating that firearms enthusiasts use on their firearms. I was first made aware of it, when a guy on a forum coated half of a revolver with it and left the other half untreated. He lived in Minnesota I think and just chucked the revolver outside in the snow and slush of winter for about 3 months. The part that was coated...looked untouched...the untreated part rusted like crazy.

I used Eezox on my custom Lajosi which was also gun blued and made of carbon steel. I swear by Eezox. I've used it on all my carbon steel putters. Play golf and at the end of the round when I get home...put a few drops of oil on the putter and thoroughly wipe it gently down. Not a spec of rust ever formed on that thing.

You can buy a small bottle of it on Amazon. I still have my original small bottle...that stuff will last you forever. Great putter by the way!
