Preventing range mat from forgiving fat shots

I recently moved from Southern California to Seattle. As a fairly new golfer, I noticed I immediately became a worse ball striker. Finally giving in and doing some research, I think it is for two reasons:

The wet grass catches the club more and causes fat shots to be punished harderI'm no longer on a grass driving range, and therefore not being forced to make good contactI've seen a few options like duck tape, but I'd love to have feedback that I feel/see with the swing/ball.

My only solution so far is to buy something like a TrueStrike mat and bring it with me to the range.

Anyone have any ideas or feedback on the TrueStrike as a solve?

You can always put a towel behind the ball and work on hitting ball first without grabbing the towel.

First swing, towel flew into the range. Maybe i need a bigger bath towel...

Lol I was going to say that’s a bad idea for that very reason. Sounds good in theory.

Put down a banking money note (largest denomination in your country) about half inch back from the ball.

Now, swing away.

See how quick you improve.

Put about 18 inches of painters tape on the mat perpendicular to direction you are aiming. Place the ball a half in inch in front of the tape and swing away.

We've had tons of rain this winter. Fat shots are death! I play the ball a bit further back in my stance when hitting off the mushy stuff.

None of it will work unless you understand why you are struggling with your low point control.

Yeah you need to put something there, either a towel, tape, whatever. Or a truestrike mat. Or one I think is called flat plate or something. Also the one with the little foam stubs on it. That has a place where you can strike. It sucks when you hit the plastic. Although I think it sits a little too high. Don't put an alignment stick there. I've done that and it went flying LOL.

I just remembered that I had this training aid from SKLZ, unfortunately, I have no idea what it is called but you can tee it into the mat so it doesn't move and then put a ball in between it. It's pretty helpful when hitting off mats.

If you know your doing it that's the first step. I would recommend trying to not break your neck ala G gangkas.

Hammer and a nail, and be prepared to give a smile and thumbs up to any employees watching.

True it's usually not possible with the typical mats you find at public ranges, but some of the higher quality mats are designed to take a tee.
