Numbers, distances, and shaft ideas..

I was recently at a GolfTec and was able to see my numbers for the first time since purchasing new irons. I am a scratch golfer who played college a few years back. I have always relied on my ball striking to score well, and have been having a tough time feeling good with my new irons, even when hit well/playing well.

In terms of a question, I am wondering if any of you who are experienced tinkerers/number guys could help fill me in on my numbers below. I was recently fitted into a set of Taylormade p760s with modus 120x shafts (3-P), 1 degree flat, 0.5 degree weak. I love the iron heads but I am having a tough time feeling comfortable with these shafts. (previously using 714 ap2s with DG TI AMT X100, 3-P)

The 8 iron was not a great strike, 7 and 6 felt solid, but shortish compared to my old irons when playing outdoors. Flight seems a bit high when playing outdoor or outdoor practicing. Compared to my ball speed, launch, spin etc, do you think these shafts are working effectively for me.. or perhaps any recommendations on which number/potential shaft options I could look into.

Thanks so much for any feedback! (carry distances) 7 and 8 irons distances were probably closer to 160 and 170 but still short high and spinny feeling..

8 iron 7 iron 6 iron

ballspeed 110 119 125

launch 23 22 18

height 38 43 41

spin 7974 7047 5999

distance 150 167 186

Didn't have a photo for club head speed but 6 iron was 88-91.

Spin doesn't seem too crazy, but the height is pretty high. Your new shafts are quite a bit lighter than your old ones. You might just be getting used to the weight and adding some loft at impact. The older heavier shafts might have slowed down your clubhead so your hands stayed ahead, maybe now you are flipping a bit. Check the swing weights and maybe try adding a bit of weight to the heads if you can.

I have the same irons and a similar shaft DG120 X100 and a similar swing speed. I hit 7 and 8 iron this weekend and my numbers were similar in ballspeed, a little lower launch, 6-7 lower on height, and similar carry yards. Your six iron you have a few more mph of ball speed, so you probably hit it better than me, maybe the shaft isn't strong enough for you or maybe you just need to figure out the timing of it.

I was using a prov1x while gathering the data on the monitor and while playing outside I usually use a Prov1x, but have some TP5x I have been using from a recent sale.. Fitting for the irons was with range balls which maybe why it wasn't coming out as high during the outdoor fitting?

Divot size is smaller the longer the club gets but I'd say a typical divot is half of a dollar bill (2x2ish inches) pretty consistently

The AVX just feels so squishy with the driver. And the TP5x didnt seem to over spin for me in the past. These clubs just seems high and left, when I’m typically a low cutter (which go further than these high draws) maybe time to do a fitting with some dynamic golds or project X’s which I enjoyed in the past! I found a guy in the area where i can do the mizhno shaft optimizer for $45. Do the big box stores charge to use the mizuno shaft optimizer, and does it require someone experienced with club fitting, or trustable with a golftown employee as it’s just a read out?

What shafts do you have in your woods? Modus 120 is a very unique profile. Fairly stiff tip with a very large drop in mid stiffness, then a subtle increase in butt stiffness again. If you're a very aggressive swinger/hitter, than you might over work these. It can't hurt go to back to X100 if that's what you used to use.

Are those numbers fomr a outdoor test from grass, or indoor from a mat? It looks like indoor based on launch angle unless you are very shallow, launch is too high for that ball speed, but spin levels is good, but combined they might cause problems in windy conditions.

About the shaft, the shaft itself can only add or reduce the amount of Dynamic loft, but we should not make it responsible for ball flight, thats a head/loft issue, so play the shaft that has the right weight, feel is good and dispersion is good, and leave ball flight to the heads and static lofts. If ball flight is to high, bend lofts stronger, if its too low, bend lofts weaker so it fits your angle of attack and we get ball flight like we want it to be.

While the shaft you play a certainly help the way you deliver the club, it usually wont have that big of an effect on launch and spin. We are talking maybe a degree and a few hundred revs on average. Your numbers suggest something greater than a shaft. If it were me id seek a ball change ( like the tp5x or left dash prov1x) and also perhaps bend your irons a tad stronger. They already are .5 degree weak. You may have to adjust your gapping a bit, but that along with the ball change will have the most impact.

If you aren't comfortable with the feel of the shaft it will make a big difference in how you swing. You need to decide if you want to keep the shaft or go back to X100s before you worry about adjusting lofts, lies, and golf balls.

For reference I've always played X100's and when I try to hit my brothers Modus 120TX (same length, swing weight and both of us play blades) I can barely hit the center and they just don't feel right.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Went for a fitting recently and ended up going with KBS $ Tapers in 125 S+. Completely fixed my distance, flight, even the sound coming off the face. I guess the modus 120x just didn't suit my swing. I also tried project x, c tapers, DG's in many flexes and weights, but these $ tapers in s+ have the perfect feel of stiffness and feel for my swing. Like everyone says.. get fitted!
