The sweet melancholy of the lip-out that costs you your first ever square round.

Pay no attention.

I’m just venting over post-round beers.

I’ve been a member here for a long time. And played even longer.

I’m lucky that as I grow older my handicap has been growing smaller.

I can’t hit anywhere near as far, but I am way straighter.

A few years back I broke 80 for the first time.

That was my lifetime golf goal.

Then I had the occasional mid 70 if everything went just right.

Today everything went slightly better than just right.

I hit almost every fairway, and then almost every green. I made almost every putt.

I lipped out one five foot putt.

I finished 1 over.

I’d love to build the drama by saying the lipout was on the 18th with everything on the line, but it was the fifth.

I did miss a 12 footer for birdie on the last though.

:)

I’m sorely disappointed to have missed out achieving something I expect to never achieve again. Due to an errant blade of grass. Or gravity.

And yet remarkably sanguine.

Golf, eh?

Congrats for putting it! I have a friend who needed a putt of 3 or 4 feet on the 9th to break 40 for the first time - he looked at me, looked at my daughter and nobody was saying "pick it up", lol. He missed and was a little miffed he didn't get the gimme he wanted, but probably more frustrated he missed the putt. Still . . .

Good news is that was Friday evening and the next day, Saturday he shot 39 on the front and all was right with the world (made him putt that one, too).

Remember Nicklaus seemed to have his momentum stopped by a spike mark on number 12 at the '86 Masters - the rest as they say is history! No doubt you'll get back there and get it done.

Congrats on an excellent round! Those are the moments we play this game for and you got to that point by staying positive through the years. I have no doubt you can and will get to that point again, and the experience you gained here will serve you well then.

Congrats! Still a great round. It reminds me of the first (and only) time I ever shot an even par 72 for a round of golf.

I was 1-under heading into hole 17. Like your round, everything was just going right that day. The swing felt smooth as butter. As we're moving between 16 green and 17 tee my buddy says "wow, you really have a great round going!"

Of course I bogey #17 now. I get to 18, which is a par 5. I blister one off the tee. I get to my ball and pull 3-wood. I smoked that too. I'm on the green in two. If I two-putt, I am in red numbers for the first time ever.

I choked. Three-jack-city. Nonetheless, very happy with my day.

Golf can be cruel.

Had a putt for even on 18. Ball hit the back of the cup, landed on the front lip. And stayed there.

Took me two years to shoot even for 18 after that.

I know how you feel. In Dec. on my last round of 2019, I birdied 16 and 17 to get to -1. Hit my 2nd shot onto a knoll just off the back edge of 18 and missed the par putt from 8ft. Could've been my 1st sub-par round of the year. Always next year.

My friend who is actually a good golfer besides what im about to say... he sometimes likes to ask for 2 to 4 foot gimmies no matter what the putts for. Its like ok? I know your good and all but putt the damn ball unless its a foot or less. Half the time we make him putt out he misses so its not a gimmie. To be fair he likes to give us the 3 4 foot gimmie but we never accept. Im like this is 4 feet im going to putt. Not only that but he also likes to move his ball in the fairway? Even if its sitting just fine. So wierd. Others have complained too but its some kinda wierd thing he cant not do.. like i said hes actually a good player and can shoot 78 79 without the little wierdness but for some reason he just does... got to love golf and all its players.

I just broke par for the first time about 6 months ago (shot -3). I never thought I'd be able to break par. Guess what.... I did it again last month (-1 that should have been -4 if I had been putting worth a darn). I now feel that breaking par is not a big deal and it should happen several times a year or even more. I think it's a mindset thing. I had shot even par probably 15 times through the last 20 years, but could never get over the mental "hump" of par. I'm over it now....

  • 1 month later...

Well how many time have I messed up a great round?, plenty!!!!, at my best (15-17 years ago) I was hovering around par, however, the mind starts to play games with you, which is what happened to me a few times, shot 34 in the front, on the back nine I was -4 for the round, then doubled 17 and 18, back to par...started thinking about the score instead of just playing, yup got me every time, after learning how to play and adjust the mental game I started to play much better...fast forward to today and I'll be lucky to get even par, I still can play well, my average is 75-76, but there is an accessional blow up round where I score 80-82, it is golf, it is a hobby, I don't take it as serious as before, I just enjoy being out and hitting the links...I am in Afghanistan, hoping to go home for a vacation as soon as this travel ban is lifted, so I can at least play a few rounds...again, its a game, that's all!!!

Played with my good friend Saturday. Previous PB was 72 about a year ago, but usually shoots in the high 70s-low 80s. I'm keeping the card as he makes 9 straight pars on the front. This is starting to get interesting as he's clearly playing unusually well. A birdie on 12 gets him to -1 followed by 5 straight pars. One under standing on the tee at 18 and he's clearly nervous but I haven't told him where he stands because I don't want to "black cat" him. I'm just as nervous as he is- maybe more as I watch him pull his tee shot into the left trees. My head drops. He proceeds to hit driver off the deck through the trees to about 20 feet and two putts for 71. Then he backs it up with a 72 on Sunday and a 72 yesterday. Good thing we're taking separate carts these days as I don't think my head and his would fit.

Op. You have to go to the idea of not keeping score , and truly trying to focus on only the shot at hand. That’s worth 3-5 shots a round. I promise you. We all lose that concentration, but the more diligent you are on that the easier it gets. And once you break par in a round where the concentration didn’t come easy , it’s like riding a bike. You can do it again.
