What do you consider a "good" ball striker?

Is someone considered a good ballstriker if they hit 6 out of 10 greens, all at 30 ft or 4 out of 10, but 2 times its within 10 feet, the other times its 35+ feet?

A good ball striker is someone who hits the center of the face over and over and has control of the golf ball. It would depend on the distance of the approach to answer your question. 10 approach shots from >150 out, 6 balls finishing at 30 feet would be very good.

Greens greens and more greens, I know some guys who hit the heel side slightly or toe, but KNOW where the ball is going.

Yea, there’s a couple different ways to quantify this, but in general, I’d say that if you dropped 20 balls at the feet of a “good ball striker”, from 160 yards, the first quality that you will see is that non of the balls will dribble 90 yards down the fairway... they will get every ball up in the air, and holding all other variables, will hit the ball 135+ yards with 18+/20 balls. So with that, I’d probably think 12+/20 would be with two put range, maybe within 45 feet. The rest, which would be 7/20, would be reasonable up n downs, and that would leave that 1/20 Might be a mishit which would be a really long or tough up n down. This is a very general look at “a good ballstriker” in my eyes. You can quantify it many other ways (like the ability to shape the ball or the ability to take away the right or left miss on approach) but that’s where I’d start...

Good ball striking is not hitting the ball thin or fat, at least finding the face and grooves properly.

Great ball striking is getting it to go where you want and hitting greens.

I would say someone who can work the ball, hitting a draw or a fade when needed.

Oh, I thought "good ball striker" was a euphemism that meant someone that putts and chips poorly but still manages to shoot good scores.

Good ball striking is consistent center face hits with a predictable and controlled ball flight. Hitting it close has nothing to do with that, but IS a byproduct of course management and great ball control.

In my mind a good ball striker is someone who flushes it. It doesn't necessarily have to go straight, but you do have to hit the middle of the clubface basically every time and fairly hard. Ball flight should tell you if it was struck well. Some people use it to mean hitting fairways and greens (including the PGA Tour), but I've seen some people who scuff it round and hit fairways and greens - a talent in and of itself, but that's not good ball striking. That's good play.

Someone who hits 10 greens plus a round. I don't buy the crappy strike argument and still hit greens though I guess it could depend on your course. My old course you could fat one 5m short of a green and it might run on. My current one, you land 1m short and it stays short.

Very few people hit lots of greens and have bad scores.

Someone who consistently plays at or below their handicap under the gun

Good, they are almost always pin high and not too far away. EG within 100 yards they are almost always on green. 150 almost always green side at worst. 200 still arrive around pin high and sitting in green side bunker at worst.

Elite guys are the guys on tour, who can stripe a 3 wood at the pin and make it spin. When you take a 3 wood and can say you can (doesn't mean 100%, even pro's can't do it every single time) control the distance on it, you're elite. But pro's can do this because it's necessary in order to score eagle chances on long par 5's.
