No More Long Irons - Combo with GI/Hybrids Mixed Set For Average Golfer

Been experimenting because I can no longer hit my long irons with enough height and distance. However, I love playing players cavity back forged irons with traditional lofts but need more forgiveness in the 5 to 3 irons. Like others mixing and matching combo clubs, see my new bag from PW to 4 Wood. This way, I feel I have all the distances between 100 to 210 yards. It was hard to let go of the long irons since I started playing with Tommy Armour 845s 2 Iron to PW many moons ago.

PW - 6 Iron Miura CB 57 with lofts from 47* to 30*

6 Iron Honma XP-1 with 26* loft as my 5 iron

24* and 21* Bridgestone Tour BX-Hybrids

17* Tour Edge EXS 4 Wood

Add 2 wedges, a putter and a driver = 13 clubs. It's odd looking at two 6 irons in my bag but one is 30* and the other is 26* and a quarter inch longer with a light graphite shaft.

I hope this will improve my game.

I am "all in" on the concept of blended sets. More offset and lower, more rearward CG in the longer irons helps maintain good distance gaps between clubs when you are a slower swinger. I am using blades for my 8-GW (Adams Pro Black MB), player's cavity backs for my 6 and 7 (Adams CB1), and an SGI 5 iron ( Adams CB3). I currently use 2 (16*), 3 (19*) and 4 (24*) hybrids, and no fairway woods.

Sweet.

I played mizuno blades 4-PW a couple years ago but now I am playing hybrids from 3-PW. Very easy to hit and super confident.

I have a combo set, and use hybrid/long irons, Mizuno MP Fli Hi 3 and 4 irons, the 2010 models. They fly high enough, and are more accurate than hybrids for me.

3i - 4i Mizuno MP Fli Hi (driving type iron)

5i - 7i Mizuno MP64 Players CB

8i - pw Mizuno MP4 Pure muscle back blade

Hit em good

I’m looking at doing something similar. I can’t really hit my 5 iron if I need to on the course. I can get in a groove in the range but it never translates. So my 5 iron may get replaced with a hybrid as soon as I can do it.

OP: you have two 6 irons: a new model Homna with 26 degrees of loft and a more traditional Miura with 30 degrees. I think that is a good idea.

I am doing something similar this season. I intend to carry two 7 irons: one with 33 degrees of loft (my beautiful Adams A4 forged iron) and a newer model, one of the current rage of hollow irons, a Cleveland UHX 7 iron with 30 degrees of loft. That 30 degree club will be my "longest" iron.

It is amusing to look at the relationship between the number of the iron and the associated degrees of loft. This season Titleist is offering five different sets of " T - series" irons. Each set has a 7 iron that is 37 inches long. However, depending on which set of Titleist irons you select, the loft on that 7 iron can be as follows: 34 degrees; 32 degrees, 30 degrees, 29 degrees and, -- wait for it --, 26 degrees.

In other words, the number on the sole of the iron club is largely meaningless.

Enjoy your combo set !!!

Interesting to hear about the T series Titleist irons. Yep, in the end, it's what makes you score the best. It was kind of fun figuring out the combination but as I said earlier, I feel like I have my distances covered. Thanks.

I had a mental block on hybrids and it's 100% because I remember when my dad switched to them and I'd joke with him "What's wrong, old man? Can't hit a 3 iron anymore?"

Jokes on me, I'm the old man now. Went TS2 for my 3 and 4.

More tinkering but I feel I can actually love and hit all these 14 clubs. The 5 Iron and 25* hybrid have the same lofts so the iron will serve like a 4 iron for low running shots.

I’m of the same mindset... honestly, I don’t need a 200 to 230 yard club at my home course. It’s just not a shot I see enough to worry about.

i haven’t figured out my remaining two clubs between six iron and 18 degree hybrid. I’m thinking driving iron and then just see how the first dozen rounds go this season and go from there... might just add the chipper sitting unclaimed in our bag room.

I am with you OP. Going on 62 and SS down to 99 dictates changes

I now play players cb’s up to a 6i, then my 5i is a Srixon U85, then hybrids in the 4 and 3 spots before 3w and Driver.

This makes sense to me, but so did peak oil at one time so I will be watching my scores to see if I find any proof in this pudding I put on my plate :-)
