Cheaper AVX

Hey guys,

I am about a 12 handicap and struggle with my game around the green mostly but some longer iron game struggles and the only ball that I feel comfortable using is the AVX. I like a pretty soft ball and would like a mid to low ball flight.

Sooo basically, Are there any balls out there that performs and feels like the Titleist AVX? The reason I’m asking is because I would like a cheaper option & I can get a dozen AVX for about $45.

Having tried pretty much all of the Driect to Consumer balls I would say the Vice Pro Soft is the closest to the AVX. It's going to look a little different as it's only available in a matte finish, but performance should be almost identical and I found that to be one of the best direct to consumer balls from a durability standpoint. Just grab Vice's trial pack to confirm before buying in bulk to get the discount, but at $25 per dozen should be what you're looking for.

I have tried vice pro+ on a wimb but didn’t find those to be to my likings. I will need to give a Pro soft a try. Have you had any issues with Pro Soft durability? I have heard they scar and discolor easly.

Yes, the Titleist Prestige is virtually identical to the AVX and can be found for maybe $20-25/dozen online. The Prestige is a JDM model that a few US retailers sell as overruns. Make sure you get the 2015 or 2017 version of the Prestige, as my understanding is previous gens had a different dimple pattern that may make them fly differently than the AVX you prefer.

Again durability wise the pro soft I found to be very good, arguably the best of any ball directo to consumer or typical retail ball that I have ever played and I tried every urethane ball on the market in 2019. The Pro and Pro+ I would say are some of the worst from a durability standpoint. So not sure besides the matte finish what else Vice is doing to the cover on the Pro Soft, but that is a very durable golf ball. As for the discoloration the matte finish is going to be more pourous than a standard gloss cover. It's not as smoothe and will naturally pick up more color because of this. But this will not effect performance at all. Keep in mind you are paying $20 less per dozen. If you can get the same performance I would think dealing with a little color here and there is probably worth the money.

KSig 3 piece somewhat fits that bill... Not a ton of greenside spin, but enough, and feels soft.

Lostgolfballs.com MINT AVX will be perfect for you at $22.50/dz. I ordered 5 dozen "Good" condition once for the wife and kiddo and they were $9.99/dz and LGB was out of "Good" so they sent mint. Out of 60 golf balls, I found 2 that looked like they had ever been hit once. Needless to say I reordered some other golf balls for the wife and kiddo and just kept he AVX's.

You should take a look at the golf ball buyers guide that the spy website put out and compare what features you are looking to duplicate. You can find similar balls in terms of launch and spin but the compressions may be much different so the feel won't be the same. Based on their charts, the closest ball I saw in terms of launch, spin and compression would be the Bridgestone Tour B RX but I'm not sure how much cheaper it would be than the AVX.

Vice Pro Soft is a terrible ball. Feels soggy and short off the tee.

Have you tried the Snell MTB or a comparable Vice ball?

The Snell MTB is going to feel way to hard compared to the AVX.

I've only played the MTB-X, so I don't have any experience with the MTB. I didn't like the AVX for my swing. It felt mushy and I hit knuckle balls with it, but to each his own.

Disagree. The MTB-X is much firmer but the MTB Black is nearly identical to ProV1 in terms of feel and compression. I play both the AVX and Snell MTB Black. Performance very similar for me and the AVX feels only a little softer but hardly noticeable.

To each his own but Snell has a compression of 105 and the PRO V1 is 104. The AVX is 95 which, to me, felt massively softer.

I think the compression numbers listed on mygolfspy were way off. Dean says the MTB Black is a low compression ball. This is taken direct from his website describing the Black:Soft Feel - softer mantle layer and lower compression core provide a softer feel than other MTB models. (75-80 compression range)

I was picked to test the Snell black and found it to be quite clicky. Soft was not the word I used to describe it in my reviews. I found it similar to the Srixon XV which is my favorite ball and is also firmer in feel.

I will defer to you. One thing to come out of this discussion is that Mygolfspy was probably right in that we should not really be concerned with the actual compression numbers. Especially since we probably can't get accurate information even from the manufacturers. FWIW I recently went to a Titleist ball fitting. They have an interesting and different take on the process. Forget about CHS since you have 14 different clubs in your bag, all with different speeds! They also said that ALL of their balls were within 1 yard in terms of driver distance.

I think I will just have to bite the bullet and play the new 2020 AVX. Really excited about the more greenside spin. Also curious about the new 2020 chrome soft.

Dean is referencing core compression vs MyGolf$py referencing overall compression. Either way the later is a better approach for cross company comparison as all balls were tested using the same method and under the same conditions.

While 10 compression points on the ATTI scale is noticeable, I would not consider it a “massive” difference in today’s age where the industry range is around 60 points.

That ionomer cover on the Wilson will lose considerable spin greenside which TXG did not test (likely because it is harder to consistently reproduce and due to measurement accuracy concerns).

Lol... is this a troll? The KSig 3-piece is one of the highest spinning balls out there. It's also relatively high compression.

It's basically the EXACT opposite of the AVX.

I play both the AVX and the Pro V1. Both are very similar balls. Low spin with a penetrating ball flight. I honestly can't tell the difference in terms of feel either, even though the Pro V1 isn't a cheaper option. I've tried many other slightly cheaper options like the Vice Pro, Chromesoft X and Bridgestone Tour B RX. I've always ended up going back to the AVX or Pro V1.

I play Vice Pro Soft in the winter/cool season, it's actually a very good ball. Only thing I don't like, is for some reason the matte finish seems to attract/hold mud more than shiny finished balls. Vice Pro (not Plus) is pretty much a ProV1 as far as I can tell....worth looking into.

As another responded, LostGolfBalls 4 or 5 A condition is where a couple guys I know (who lose a lot of balls) get theirs and for ridiculous cheap prices when bought in quantity.
