Opinion: Should Arm-lock Putting be Ruled Anchoring?

The USGA /R&A outlawed anchoring - both belly putting and the long putter.

Players still use the long putter with minimal distance between hand and sternum, which I think should be banned as well. No "levering" where one hand stays stationary?

But how about arm lock putting (DeChambeau, Simpson, Bradley to name a few)?

Weigh in.

I don't think they should have banned the belly putting like they did. It doesn't help everyone, if it did, EVERYONE would have been using one. If it helps some guys, I don't see any problem with it. So, no, they shouldn't ban the arm lock either.

I think you should be able to lay down and hit the ball like a pool shot if you want to. How are alternative putting grips unfair for anyone? There is nothing stopping anyone from using one of these grips if it works better than some other method. Legislating the putting stroke is such a useless waste of energy, especially when there are many other areas that could use improvement that would impact fairness of the game much more directly.

I think they should have, when they banned the belly putter etc. Players like Webb Simpson have adapted to the current rules now.

Rather than banning this or banning that, they should limit the length of putters using a formula similar to this one: Length = (height in inches/2) + 1". This would allow a 6' tall player to use a putter up to 37", and a shorter/longer putter for someone shorter/taller, respectively; I don't know why someone who is 6' tall would need a 37" putter (I'm 6' tall and use a 35" putter), but to each their own. But, once you choose a conforming putter, you can put however you want with it.

very good Training aide though for forward shaft lean and backswing If you take it outside. It will help both if properly done.

Nope, USGA should've left that anchoring stroke rule alone. Let more golfers enjoy playing golf.

I can't remember the last round I played that one actually used a normal putting stroke. Armlocks, claw grips and broomsticks. I even see a side saddler once a while. Heck, I'm putting better using unanchored putting stroke.

And, the old square groove irons should come back as well. The new irons with the face treatments create a lot more spin than my old Pings.

Seems like these rules guys are like Congress...just making up rules so they can feel relevant.

What if you are 6'8" with T-rex arms? My 5'8" buddy uses a 35" putter while I'm 6' and use 33.5".

I guess I should have prefaced my comment as applying to the competitive/tournament play only; I don't give a damn what Johnny TwoShanks does out on the course in a recreational round. However, if one is 6'8" with t-rex arms, I imagine putter length is the least of one's concerns. Using your examples, though, both you and your friend would be in compliance with my proposal.

Would there be any minimum length under your proposal? I heard a story once that all putters used to be far shorter than today's standard and it wasn't until tour pros complained to Karsten that the putter was always hard to fish out of their bag, so he started making them 35"

In my mind the USGA Blew it- bifurcation should’ve been allowed as in most other sports… In a professional golf game they simply couldn’t limit the putter length as tiger mentioned once long ago
