MP20 are noticeably softer

919 a touch more forgiveness off centre and thin

Wider sole on 919 but more camber on MP20 - turf interaction jury is out for me

Profile smaller on MP20

919 flew a fair bit higher for me

the satin vs chrome makes the look at address a fair bit different

I hit plenty of shots with both of these sets before I pulled the trigger. I liked the 919s better and bought them. I was coming off a set of Nike Vapor Pros, and before that the T-Zoids from.... 1999? It had been a while since I really upgraded.

The 919s flew higher than both of those without giving up any distance, but I had a lot of them bent strong. That didn't really affect flight, they're fairly forgiving for what they are, and it works for me.

PW: 44

9: 41

8: 38

7: 35

6: 30

5: 27

4: 23

I play a 47, 50, 53, 56, and 60 with the 919s. Not all at the same time, but that's my basic setup. Driver, 5w, 3h are in the mix too.

Can't recommend them enough. I've never been great at putting backspin on irons, so the ball flight is my only tool to stop shots into a green. I found I hit the MP20s lower and slightly further. I could spin them more but not enough to put them over the top.

That surprises me the MMC dig with just one strong. Mizuno claims to have made the "20" line to be able to bend 2° and not effect playability. Other than spin launch optimization.

For reference:

My goal is to get the 919tours and bend 1° strong. I am going with a three wedge set up, not counting PW. The bending is for gapping purposes. My fitter was not worried about turf interaction after the bend.

The copper underlay definitely improved feel. I only hit it off a mat but The mp20 definitely flew higher and longer for me. Curious on turf interaction differences. I would do a similar setup to the Limited edition left handed with a #4 hmb

Mizuno's sole grind does not work for everyone. If you have a tendency to get stuck in your swing and catch it a touch heavy it can be pretty punishing. When striking the ball crisp the MP20 got in and out of the turf very efficiently - as did the 919T. I much prefer Srixons in this regard though and also found the higher bounce design of the Titleist blades and Apex MB more forgiving to heavier strikes.

I have hit the v sole and could never get along even with the Srixon 785s or callaway irons

I was playing the jpx 900 tour until I got the mp20 mb. Still have the 900t's...Both great irons, the 900t are a smidge more forgiving, not enough to make a difference. Although Mizuno lists the bounce as the same on both models, the turf interaction is cleaner/crisper on the mp20's (I take thin divots) which is a big deal to me. I hit the mp's a tad lower but a tad longer, that's ok also. I have 5-pw in both sets and I admit the 5/6 iron in 900t are a little easier to get up but again, contact is better with the mp's...will be using the mp's from here out.

The Mizuno sole works great for me, but when I put my swing on a sim, my downward angle of attack is only -1 to -3 degrees—very shallow.

My MP-4s worked great up north in normal soil and still are working well for me in my soggy Florida turf, but my miss is thin.

I just picked up a set of Callaway Apex MBs to test out the noticeably higher bounce, though if I’m being honest, that’s just my excuse—that iron set holds a special place in my heart and I’ve been looking to add it to my bag since the day I hit it. Going to take them to a grass range today for their first spin on turf. :)

Back to the topic—I’ve only hit the MP20 and JPX 919 in a hitting bay. My preference is for softer irons, so I much prefer the MP20 line. Both the MB and the MMC are noticeably softer than the JPX 919 tour.

On aesthetics, I also prefer a chrome finish. But worth noting is that the JPX has a thinner topline than the MP20–the MP20 MB cheats a bit by doing a knife edge—it’s a little chunky just below the edge of the topline. The JPX and MMC look better, to my eye.

If I were choosing from Mizuno’s current lineup, I’d go with the MMC. I think it’s the best marriage of look and feel in the current lineup, and I think it technically has more tech/help than the 919 tour if that’s a concern.

I gave the 919 Tour irons a go but didn't get along with the sole. I didn't like how it got through the turf and felt more at home with the MMC irons. More like the irons I've played in the past from Mizzy. Great feel with the MMC irons as well. The 919s felt kind of harsh IMO.
