Extending a fwy shaft for a driver- what to do about tipping?

I’ve got a fairway shaft that I am extending an inch and a half to use in my driver. Just curious though, since 3 woods are commonly tipped an inch or so (not sure about the specifics on this one, I bought it already installed), what do you guys do about the extra tipping compared to what is recommended for a driver? Do you just deal with it? Or is there some way to add a little flexibility back to the shaft to make it play more like it’s original specs? Only thing I can think of is adding a little weight to the head.

Do you have any experience with the particular shaft in a driver untipped? Tipping is always just a recommendation but everyone has different preferences for feel and stiffness for their swing. So don't assume it's going to be an issue unless maybe you're trying to recreate something you've already tried and found you liked.

Even if you do have such a reference, how much the tipping effects the feel is going to be different with different shaft profiles and different swings. So there's no way to tell how much it might effect the results for you until you give it a try.

But to answer the main question, the only practical way to soften the shaft back to 'normal' is to increase the head weight. Roughly about 10 gm for each 1/2" of tipping (so it's important to know the actual amount it's been tipped). But since getting a good fit for swing weight is generally going to be way more important than getting a good fit for stiffness, that means you'd likely also have to cut down the playing length in order to keep the swing weight from becoming unmanageable for that much added head weight.

You can always try it by adding some lead tape before actually adding the extension to see how it feels and deciding on a final playing length. Most driver heads will play about 1/2" longer than most fairway heads so you probably wont be loosing quite as much length as you may have thought.

It’s an old-school UST Mamiya Elements (the green and black one). I’ve had the 6R “Macho Kick” (low launch) in my driver but I’m looking for a higher launch. I’ve been using the same shaft in the “Dynamic Kick” (high launch) in my 4 wood, but I’m in the process of swapping them, eventually putting the MK in my fairway. Assuming the graphics are the same on the twin shafts, the DK has been tipped 1 1/4” already.

This might end up playing out alright since I was planning on playing the DK in my driver at 44.50 or less, which means I’ll probably add a bit of lead tape anyway to get the weight up. We’ll see!

We cant do much about it, and we should not add more head weight than we need, dont misuse weight for flex reasons, head weight itself is more important for you and your swing.

If you are a slow club speed player, we can reduce insert to 1.0", and shim up the difference, but thats hardly ever more than 0.25", maybe 3/8" depending on how deep insert is now, so we cant make much of a difference this way either.

Tip trim for 3W is normally 0.5" but it might vary from shaft model to shaft model, some no tip trim, others up to 1.0", but the most common is 0.5" for a 3W/210-212 grams head, but then we have "OEMs own standard" or policy for tip trim who might be different than the shaft manufacturers trim charts. You need to know "tip to grapics" on your shaft vs "standard" for that model to know if its tip trimmed or not, and how much.

Try it off like it becomes (leave tip and insert as it is), it might be how you like it to be.
