PGA Championship may move due to coronavirus

At this point, I’d be surprised if it doesn’t get moved, cancelled, or played without spectators.

Sawgrass makes sense as the most ready-to-go venue available, but how confident can they be that Florida won’t be in the same situation in May that California is In now?

I cannot believe the PGA of America would move it to Sawgrass. Valhalla is supposed to be the contingency plan for PGA of America events. Taking it to Sawgrass seems crazy on several fronts, but no one ever accused the PGA of America of knowing what to do.

PGA is not the PGA Tour, so are you guys talking about Sawgrass CC or the TPC? I can't imagine the latter choice...

Seems a strange one but plenty of golf journalists claiming this is being discussed. Two really big tournaments at the same venue in fairly quick succession might seem a little flat. I guess at such short notice options will be limited.

As if Florida isn’t the east coast Southern California ? How is it less dangerous or whatever the story is ?

TPC Sawgrass holds the fifth major every year, so it makes sense to use it as an emergency location for the third major.

The PGA Tour and the PGA are different organizations, but they have shared heritage and have cooperated in the past. Arguably, the Tour owes the PGA one for moving to May.

I'd be more worried about all the human excrement on the streets of SF than COVID-19

Quotation marks around "fifth major" would have helped to denote sarcasm.

This is finally a chance to finally have the first international Major not in the US/UK!!

Seems to me moving the PGA to Sawgrass would undermine the value of the Player's or both tremendously.

In an article on Golf Channel Billy Horschel is quoted as saying there is a rumour going around the "players" on tour that The Masters could be played with no patrons. Hopefully its a mere contingency and not a likely option.

“People were saying [the Masters] might not have patrons this year. That was a rumor the last couple of days with the players. That would be unbelievable to play Augusta with no patrons,” Horschel said. PGA Tour and players leery of the coronavirus, but still trying to engage with fans

The article specifically mentions TPC Sawgrass. Unbelievable, I know.

The pro golfers would love no patrons.

Probably all of them except the winner.

Imagine holing a putt to win the Masters to the sound of polite applause from your playing partner and a couple of caddies. It could be somewhat anti-climactic.

Certainly the current conversations about moving from Harding Park play right into the PGA Tour's desperate, breathless efforts to promote the Players as the "5th major". I'm sure they're loving every minute of it.

Oooooh the sky is falling. What a joke. I'd move the PGA back and leave it there, just simply because that's how its supposed to be.

Lost among all the rumors and denials is the fact a contingency plan is in the works. TPC Sawgrass is the backup and plans being prepped for getting the course ready. Other than more cases getting everyone nervous is the fact the city of SF owns Harding and they could extend a ban on gatherings already in place to cover more venues. At this point it's really not a stretch to think this could happen.
