PGA tour should extend exemptions to 2021

The pga tour did the right thing in canceling the players and tournaments up to the Masters and it can be longer due to the coronavirus. Many players depend on sponsors invite to play or need enough money to retain their tour cards. Would you support a tour iniative extending exemptions for all players who risk losing their pga tour cards this season?

I understand where you are coming from, but the top 125 is still the top 125 if you play 30, 35 or 40 events. I would like to see the Players expand the field next year and include any players exempt into this years event be guaranteed a spot next year. Goosen isn’t likely to get in again, Furyk doubtful, etc. Maybe the same for the match play, I dunno. Also some PGA Sections get exemptions for their section winners, I think San Antonio had pga members in the field. I’d like to see a spot for them in the following year’s event.

but the season long exemption is still based on the season, that’s not a “one off” exemption.

If players are relying on sponsor's exemptions they have made themselves marginal on the PGA Tour or are trying to break in or get opportunities other than having earned a card. Really not a big problem.

As for the rest, pretty sure the Tour will sit back and analyze and come up with what it thinks is fair, but way too early to simply suggest x or y should happen.

Whether certain Tour players have cards next season is a long way off my radar screen for concerns.

its way too early to make a ruling on exemptions, nobody is playing right now so there is nobody with a playing advantage. right now it is the same as if title sponsors were lost and events were cancelled. The Tour is under no obligation to make sure that the Tour pro ( an independent contractor) makes a living. Their responsibility is to provide a fair venue, adequate sponsorship...and so on and so forth

While I agree that it is too early to make a call on exemptions, the idea that the current points list is in anyway indicative of how the season would look at the end or "the top 125 is the top 125" is ludicrous. If the season were to end today, the following guys would be outside the top 125 (current rank/2019 rank in parenthesis):

Ian Poulter (128 / 41)Shane Lowry (140 / 33)Lucas Glover (141 / 29)Kiradech Aphibarnrat (164 / 83)Si Woo Kim (170 / 46)C.T. Pan (171 / 37)Sergio Garcia (179 / 72)Henrik Stenson (197 / 90)Justin Rose (205 / 26)Brooks Koepka (213 / 3)

Honestly I think 125 players in the playoffs is about 35 too many as it is. Add in all the other exemptions (sponsor, injury, career money, etc) and I feel it's not a bad idea to start trimming some of the fat.

In short there's no way I offer exemptions to anymore golfers even if a chunk of the season gets wiped out. It's a bad precedent. So now every time tournaments get cancelled there would be a call to do this. If you are a Koepka type who finishes outside the top 125 one season he already has earned his tour card for many more years. If a journeyman type finishes outside the top 125 he should go back to the korn ferry and earn his way back. They will already get exemptions into the korn ferry playoffs, alternate events and swing season events anyway.

I dont agree with this argument. Some of those guys incl Barnrat, IJP, and Lowry have already finished outside the top 125 in previous seasons but still get sponsors exemptions or get in via the owgr. Glover had to earn his card back in the korn ferry playoffs 2 years ago and on the heels of that made it all the way to the tour championship last year. I would argue a stint on the kf might be good for alot of the players that can't make the top 125 in the fedex rankings.

Why are we not allowed to discuss these events where that which shall not be spoken about is the significant factor causing tournaments to be suspended? It's golf related, same way we discuss weather affecting tournaments. Most of the threads being locked don't seem half as bad as others I've seen. Sure leave the politics out of it but this isn't a peripheral issue, it's front and center in golf as well as our every day lives.

I think you are missing my point. My point is simply that the top 125 list in March is highly unlikely to reflect what the list would look like at the end of the season in any year. I don't think this is a debatable point. As such, using the current list to determine who gets a card and who doesn't is ridiculous.

Maybe an example using the Players will help. I think it would be ridiculous to declare Matsuyama the winner of the 2020 Players and pay him the 1st place money. He only played one round. That is my argument in a nutshell.

Believe it or not the tour has already played 50% of its schedule for this season thanks to all the swing season events. Even if the next 6 events get wiped out they will still play 42 of the 48 events scheduled. I think that should be more than enough to determine the top 125 without giving out a bunch of additional one year extensions. We will also have a new batch of korn ferry grads on top of if too.

It's probably way too premature to even guesstimate how all this will play out though.

That is funny. Ironically, Jason Alexander does a ton of narrating. He did all the Dr Suess books. haha. The best being "Oh say can you say".. haha.

A lot of forum members, myself included, are seasonal. These are my first posts since The Open or shortly after. If a decent tournament is not happening I'm not coming here to talk about DJ's new wedge. But the cancellations due to this CV is interesting but I guess somehow it's political and so is off limits. Well I probably won't be hanging around much until golf resumes. In fairness though I'm sure the developers of this site could care less.
