Where were you in '86?

Watching the special about Jack and the '86 Masters. I was thinking back to where I was while watching it. I was 19.

I was in Florida. I drove through the night from MD to Ft. Lauderdale for vacation. I was out by the pool partaking in many adult beverages. I came in and saw Jack birdie 9. Sat there a few and he birdied 10. I sat there for the next three hours!!!

It was the most thrilling golf I had ever watched. I still get chills watching.

Where were you??

Played golf on that brisk April morning in Iowa, watched the Masters on my 12 inch TV in my apartment with various of my Wilson Staff Tour Blades in my hands. I can't describe the tension and then guarded joy when Norman shoved his 4 iron right on 18.

I had just finished playing a round at my club. I watched the front nine in the club bar. I realized something special could be happening. I drove home, turned on the TV, put a blank tape in the VCR (yes, VCRs were big back then), grabbed a beer and sat down just in time to see him bogie #12. I thought O Lord, here we go; It's not going to happen. Then he caught fire again. It was fantastic. My kids thought I was going crazy as I was cheering at the TV in my den. A neighbor heard me and asked what the hell was going on. I clearly remember telling him it might turn out to be the greatest day in golf history.

I thought anybody that played golf was a idiot in 86. I didn't get hooked until 88.

I was at a Rotisserie Baseball Draft. Never saw a shot. Didn't even have the VCR recording it. To this day I've never seen the whole round. This was back in the day when you didn't see much of the telecast in Canada and I can't even remember who was leading after round 3. Didn't ever think the Jack stood a chance.

I had a two year old and a one month old. I didn't even know there was a tournament that week.

Same here. Started playing in 1987. I knew about Nicklaus. They made big deal about him being 46. I thought all golfers were old guys.

I was 31. That is all I remember.

I was 36, had played for 16 years. Taped everything all week. Sunday afternoon, glued to the tv, but didn't even think of Jack. Watched because it was the Masters, and the Masters had to be watched. When it started to happen, I was on the edge of my chair, but it still seemed out of reach ..... until Seve chunked that 4 iron. That got me up and jumping all the way to the end.

Working the cart barn at a since closed AFB in CA. That afternoon though most were in the bar watching the TV. Doubt there were many actually on the course.

I was 1 year old in '86....

I was part of a Navy detachment stationed at Andrews AFB.

I was a freshman in college. I was out of season, so I honestly fear what I was doing. I can assure you, though, I wasn’t watching golf.

Spent the day with my wife can’t remember what we did. Came home and my neighbor yells over “ can you believe Jack pulled it off. “ I love my wife but man I would of loved to of seen that.

In college, but watched at home with my Dad & brother.

Still incredible to see...get goosebumps every time I see the highlights. I think I have memorized every word Jack & Jackie have said about the round.

Unfortunately I was still just a twinkle in the old mans eye in 86'..... I have watched that last round on youtube though!

I was born in '87.

I was 14. My family had a membership at the local low-rent country club. During The Masters telecast, I was out playing golf with my friends. My dad stayed home to watch, and appeared incredulous that I had missed it when he came to pick me up from the club.

Depending on what weekend was dad's turn , I was outside on bikes jumping at the dirt hills or at home with mom in the wood there with my friends rolling in the neighborhood at 9 years old. It was another 5-6 years before golf came along for me.

Marital problems.....even back in 1986.

Unborn... but did watch it on the Master's app 2 years ago... Will likely watch it again soon

Same for me. I was 15. I used to hate it when I'd visit my grandparent's house on Sunday and my Uncles would turn golf on the TV. Who knew? The very next year I played my first round of golf. I actually asked for a set of golf clubs instead of my school ring my senior year (my parents obliged). The rest is history.

No, that's when they were cured.

Didn't get to watch the finish. My mom stole me to change my diaper and put me down for a nap... never forgave her

I missed it because I was on GolfWRX arguing that Tiger was the GOAT.

Somewhere in the three years following Jack's win, I told a couple friends at work that I would never play golf. Said that on two separate occasions, actually.

Yeah, see how that worked out? LOL

What I was doing during Jack's win... getting ready to play softball later that summer, shooting hoops in my driveway, and wondering if the Sixers would be able to recapture their championship form. In spite of being a MN boy. LOL (was a big Dr J fan)
