Best shorts above the knee

Looking for feedback on comfy golf shorts that aren't too long.

buy any comfy short you want, bring it to any tailor/drycleaner and get them hemmed.

Vineyard Vines - they have multiple inseam lengths available in their performance shorts.

Peter Millar Salem High Drape shorts. 9.5" inseam. Great fabric. Come to right above the knee on me. I'm 6'0". If you don't like the price, they have a sale every 6 months when you can get them 1/2 price. That's when I stock up.

Dependent on how tall you are, I'm 5'9'' and wear the Lulu Lemon Commission short 9" and they sit just about the knee. Modern fit, probably every color you could want. Not cheap at $88 but they last forever, they don't get wrinkled. Definitely a sweat wicking fabric that's fantastic and (at least for me) doesn't show sweat stains.

The New UA Iso-Chills for Golf; NOT the Showdown. Some stores don't have the Iso-Chills yet since this is their initial release. Look for them soon if your store doesn't carry them yet.

+1 for Jcrew Tech Short. They come in 7", 9" & 10.5". Perfect amount of stretch and tapered well.

Another vote for the Peter Millar Salem short. I can often find them on ebay as well in new condition, if you need them before one of the annual sales.

Not being a tall guy myself, I've searched far and wide for the perfect pair of shorts to golf on. Through extensive (and expensive) research I've narrowed down the best "above the knee" shorts by price category:

$75 and above - Lululemon Commission short, Rhone Commuter Short, Bonobos Highland Golf Shorts, Vineyard Vine Fairway Tech shorts$50-$75 - Nike Flex shorts, J. Crew Tech short, Adidas Ultimate365 9" shorts, Puma Weekender 101 short$25-$50 - PGA Tour Apparel Flat Front 7" golf short, Old Navy Ultimate Tech Shorts 8" shorts, Chubbies 7" Golf shorts, Bearbottom Hybrid shortsThere you go folks. These are, in my humble opinion, the best shorts for golf in each price category. It took a long time to research and buy about 25 different shorts but most importantly an angry wife that discovered a new package every day for me to compile this list. Cheers.

So here's what I've just now come to realize. I was always buying cheaper shorts, or ones on sale - the Old Navy short, the ever available Adidas shorts, and like others have pointed out, I get them hemmed. I'm 5'8, 155lbs, and I like them about an inch above my knee. Most of those shorts feel like they have a 10 or 11' inseam. After buying the shorts for, just say, $40, I'm in for another $12 to get them hemmed for each pair. Plus, after they get hemmed, shorts are always thicker in the thigh. So a few of my shorts look like garbage bags flapping in the wind. I'm looking right now at the 8' Vineyard Vines Performance Breakers. Down to $59.50 on sale.

So are you buying cheap shorts and having them hemmed?

I appreciate your interest. Every single pair of shorts I own has been hemmed above the knee. Some are a little too baggy in the wind for my taste because of the alterations. As a result, I am now considering the ones I referenced in my previous post. Those wouldn't need to be hemmed, thus the leg opening would be tighter, and not have so much flapping in the wind.

Anytime you shorten a pair of pants, shorts, sleeves you are also changing the intended diameter of the garmet. For instance, if you hem a pair of shorts from 11.5" to 7.5" the leg opening is going to be too big...versus if you took a 9" short inseam and hemmed to 7.5" which wouldn't be as big but still should be tapered. Your tailor can shorten and taper them for you... and my tailor only charges me for the hem.

This is especially true for pants. Another example, I'm 5'-7" and have a 38" waist and 27" inseam (picture an Oompa Loompa without the face paint and gloves). Buying a 38W x 34L will require more tapering vs. a 38W x 30L.

Short story long, cheaper to find clothing you like that is too long at a great value and have them altered... and I need to eat less donuts.

I only wear old navy go dry and amazon slim fit shorts. Those are the only two I care for.

Lululemon has a variety of lengths and fits. I find the commission slim 9” to be perfect for me. Very comfortable, well made, and they will warranty them for life. They can even hem in house if you want to take a bit of length off.

I have the same issue with dress shirts. They assume if you have a 18 neck and 37 sleeve that you are 350 pounds.

luckily Brooks Brothers makes an 18-37 in slim fit. Outside of Brooks Brothers it's either made to measure or bespoke or makes friends with a really good tailor.
