Have you had a falling out with your favorite player?

For the longest time I was in Phil's camp, especially when it came to Tiger v Phil. I just liked the underdog and kept following Phil throughout his successes. But he's done a series of things that makes me no longer root for him. I think the last straw was probably the Match. I remember seeing him one day and thinking I really don't like this guy anymore.

With his competitive career winding down, I needed a new player. Rickie, Dustin and Brooks are all great but I just didn't want to follow them, felt too forced. The only player that feels right is Patrick Reed. I like his swing, his game, his mixed bag of clubs and his grit. The only thing I don't like is his attitude and this cheating thing. Bye Phil, hello Patrick.

How did you consider Phil an underdog? He is a major champion, multi winner on tour. Then you jump ship to Patrick Reed because he is an under dog also. Do you mean under dog in that he rubs people the wrong way? I am a Phil fan and for the longest time I was a Sergio Garcia fan and even though i saw Sergio act like a small child with temper tantrums, I was so happy when he won the Masters. After that I stopped liking him once he left Taylormade and went to Callaway. I guess we can pick and choose exactly why we would like a player enough even when others don’t feel the same way. Now I root for Finau.

Was pondering this very question this morning - for a long time I really supported Kuchar, always seemed smiley and happy, good guy.... don’t know what I was thinking tbh.

and I’m not being edgy, I honestly supported Reed, his spikiness was entertaining.... don’t know what I was thinking about him either.

Patrick Reed and Ricky Fowler. Phil is still enjoyable because he's like me. Older guy likes to beat younger guys.

Very interesting question because I am the same way. Always root for the underdog, root for the good story. I am old enough to remember when Tom Watson was the new kid on tour and going up against Nicklaus. I have been a Tom Watson fan since then....plus he is from KC, which is about 4 hours from me. Anyway, I rooted hard for Tom and learned to hate the people who beat him in majors (like Seve, Scott Simpson, etc) Then I learned that Tom was an alcoholic. As a younger man, I was not very understanding on this sort of thing and I sorta quit rooting for him. I never wished bad for him, but I felt he let me down. But, as I've aged, and as Tom admitted his problem with alcohol, I've become more sympathetic towards him and look at him as my golfing idol. The 2009 loss to Stewart Cink at the British crushed me maybe more than it bothered Tom.

On to the rest of your comments about Mickelson and Reed. I used to be a big Phil fan, but after his fiasco at the US Open 2 years ago with hitting the moving ball, I feel he intentionally cheated and I haven't forgiven him for it yet. I am also really struggling how to feel about Reed. I like him and his style of play, but his blatant disregard for the rules has be a little sour on him currently. I do root for Brooks Koepka and Ricky Fowler, but not to the extent I used to root for Watson.

When I belonged to a private club, I was also just out of college in 1987 and my liver was used to getting heavy exercise on a daily basis. I could easily out drink any of my normal foursome. And the extended foursomes. Then one day I played with some new guys. One guy was an alcohol salesman and the other was a sales rep for Ram. I happened to have a Ram bag back then just because it was the lightest, cheapest bag I could find. The sales rep would even let me try some proto clubs that Watson tried and didn't like. I didn't like them either. Watson was always my favorite. We had similar styles. Not the best putters. The sales rep told me stories of Watson and going out for drinks with him. There was no way I could hang with these guys at the bar. If Watson was drinking at their level then I can see that being a big problem. I still like Tommy Watson. Hope he has that alcohol under control. He's 70 now. God bless Tom Watson.

2015-2017 I was a Speith fan. I enjoyed watching him on top of leaderboards and dominating the majors that 2015 year with "old school" just irons, short game and putting. He was not long and I enjoyed him humbling the bombers. Now he just seems content with his millions, lost with his game and unsure of himself. He doesn't have the fire anymore like he used to and has too chased distance.

By 2008-2009 I had come to like Tiger, being beaten in in a major and so on, I always liked him for being a golfer not a Spieth, but from the iron club car window smash and onwards he went down the drain for me. But last years, I’ve come to terms with him again.

I think I liked Monty first years, one cannot but like his follow-through but then I actually followed him irl in a tournament. Nuff said.

Adam Scott taking on the broom.

hate to talk bad about a legend, but Seve did not take his lack of form in the 90`s well.

some guys have gone the other way too. Phil was (some seem to have forgotten) quite bratsy first decade on the tour, something of an executive-wannabe. And saying stupid things about Tiger, I didnt like him until the jump at AN. (To which he referred as ”making a fool of himself”, last time i disliked him.) He’s grown cool since.

Ricky looked and dressed like a Bieber, but one found out he was a good guy. And that approach at 16@sawgrass...

And seeing Rory for the first time, looked absolutely like a spoiled little sh*t, with that hair and always his mouth open. That did mostly go away the first time I heard him in an interview, good guy apparently, and when he finally Mowed his hedge I got into his fan club.

then there is guys like Bubba and Boom-boom. You never knew what to expect.

And lastly there are guys with attitude problems that i kind of like because of their attitude problems, like Sergio and Reed.

I liked Tom Kite based on his short game magic and rounds I'd seen him in, but one meet in person as a kid threw all that out the window. Meet Payne Stewart about the same time and he lived up to any expectations and more as a class act. Loren Roberts was also ridiculously nice to everyone each time I encountered him. I've met other PGA and LPGA pros and never had an issue other than the first I mentioned. I don't look to tour players to be superhuman or to not have character flaws, but I do expect them to have enough decorum to be respectful of others in general and as it pertains to interactions with fans and officials, etc. As long as they live up to that there's not much I can fault them for.

None that I personally like have crossed lines within the game or directly related to it that put me off of them other than Kite.

I don’t there is anyone that I would have considered my absolute favourites that I have stopped rooting for but there are guys that I have liked and then changed my mind. They stupidest reason behind that is that they have moved on from Titleist. I liked Rory, I liked Koepka, I even liked Casey back when he was in the early days but genuinely probably did cheer for them less when they moved on. Ridiculous I know but there is no point in me lying. Tiger managed to survive moving from Titleist to Nike. I have no idea how I would feel if JT or Scotty were to move away from Titleist.

I’m not actually, don’t mind him but I still remember him using Taylor Made way back when and that just creates a problem for me haha.

Pre scrape deal in the Bahamas, I was on the fence about Reed...but one of my buddies’ kids won a Junior golf contest deal to spend some time with Reed in the early week of the Wells Fargo last year. My buddy said Reed could not have been any cooler and more welcoming and inviting with his son. He’s a giant Reed supporter now and of course that got me on his side too. We haven’t talked about it since the scrape, but he and his son will never ever forget that day and will prob always be Reed fans.

My favorites have always sort of been my favorites and that has never wavered. However I do go through phases with certain players where I can’t stand them whatsoever and the. They do something that gets me to like them a little bit more before I ultimately go back to hating them. One example is Bryson Dechambeau. I hated his hole scientist gimmick and it really turned me off. Recently I saw him interacting with the barstool sports guys and the fact that he kept up with them on a guy/lockeroom BS level made me root for him a little more. I’ve also found I feel the same way about Rahm.

brooks on the other hand is just totally obnoxious and has NO redeeming qualities IMO.

I don't get the Phil Hate. He's become much more accessible, has his Phireside chats, nice calves, etc. He doesn't win much anymore, but that's not his role anymore. His US Open rake was just out of frustration, and he didn't deny doing it. It was stupid on a pro level, but those greens were stupid. Kuchar got a lot of flak for being cheap, but it was his money, and they didn't have a contract.

I think it's nice to have variety. We don't have to have a bunch of yes men. Choose your favorite. Some are bald, same have funny hat tans, some have flowing locks, some are built like linebackers (lol), some are skinny as heck. Some are cooler than others. A prior poster liked Reed cuz of a personal experience. That's great! We oversee a lot of the flaws of our friends too. I'm sure it's the same for sports heros. If you actually have a personal connection, that overrides most everything.

I'm still rooting for Ricky and Tommy. Wish they'd win more though LOL.

Most are in the "underdog" boat. There is something about having faith in the guy who isn't favored. Rory is my exception, aside from the past 18-24 months he was far from a "sure win" but always liked how he carried himself and approached the game. Long time Webb fan too, not sure I will ever fall out of fandom with either of these guys!

Take care!
