Masters honorary starters, who is next in line?

After Jack and Gary pass the baton, who gets it next? My first guess would be Watson, then any multiple winner at the right age, probably in their 70s. Maybe Langer, Olazabal, Crenshaw. I could see Couples as well since he's such a fan favorite.

This of course until we get Tiger and Phil, probably around 2040.

I’m with you on Watson and Crenshaw. One you forgot was Faldo.

Even though Watson seems like the logical choice I dont know if his ego would allow him to be an honorary starter until he completely retires from playing. I could see Ben C. because he is such a historian and his hero is Bobby Jones...Langer looks like he will play forever...Tiger will never be an honorary starter because he will play until he cant anymore, and when he walks off into the sunset, he's not coming back

Some of the players mentioned are too young to want to be a honary. That kinda means you are well on your way out age wize. The guys who would really come to mind for me are guys like Trevino, Watson,

Trevino never won a Masters. Pretty sure the qualification for honorary is that you have to be a previous Masters champion.

edit: just looked up the first two starters: Fred McLeod and Jock Hutchinson, neither of whom were previous winners. You just have to be a legendary player. So I look forward to John Daly teeing it up in the future.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if Augusta ever came up to a formal set of qualifications. Just based off the people who I remember having done it Sarazan, Palmer, Nicklaus, Snead, and Nelson all were legends of the game with many major championships including Masters. Tom Watson seems inevitable and later Tiger and Phil will be there. Faldo should be there. I don't think Couples, Crenshaw, Langer types warrant that type of honor even though Couples is a long time fan favorite. I think it should be legends only.

If only Seve were still with us ?

I think that Crenshaw is all but a certainty to join the show so to speak. Beyond that, if they are looking for someone from outside the 50 States, Faldo and Langer would likely be the most obvious choices but a dark horse might be Sandy Lyle. He seems to be almost universally respected whereas Faldo has never been popular and Langer hardly gets the pulses racing.

X100 on the first sentence.

I'm not quite ready to bury Jack and Gary just yet, and we just argued this for many, many pages just a few months ago, and pretty much every April, but thinking about it this morning I'd enjoy the powers that be starting some kind of rotation of former champions. Leaving the Tiger in the room aside, with Arnold and Jack and Gary we had legitimate icons and living legends in the game of golf and having them serve and continuing once they started to serve just seemed to make a lot of sense, but set the bar so very high.

Let's see some of the older champions who can still swing a little, maybe some interesting combinations and spread it around. Come on Condi, you can get this done.

Edit: that's not to say Faldo, Watson, etc. aren't living legends, because they really are, but I think people get what I mean.

The difficulty here is how high the bar is right now. Tiger is the only one that measures up. Watson is very close. Faldo and Phil are the two most accomplished players in the last 30 years outside of Tiger but they aren't close to the recent crop or Tiger/Watson (maybe people argue the actual gap vs Watson). Will be interesting to see how it goes.

Going by what the Masters Toonament seems to be doing, they're using past Champs that really aren't knee deep in the golf scene anymore, so that gives us the likes of Stadler, Mize, Watson, Lyle and Spieth.

I doubt the Merry Mex will be a Hon. Starter. "Trevino explained the real reason why he didn't play the Masters: It was a boycott of tournament chairman Clifford Roberts.

"My problem wasn't with Augusta," Trevino said. "My problem wasn't with the golf course. I made it that simply because I didn't want to tell the truth. My problem was I couldn't get along with Cliff Roberts.

"Cliff Roberts and I locked horns the first time I was there. I took a disliking to the man and he took a disliking to me. I stayed away from there because I didn't want to have anything to do with him."
