Issue Pulling Shafts

Recommended Posts

I have recently started trying to do some club work myself and decided to test out a few Maltby irons. I epoxied the heads about 2 months ago and now want to swap shafts to set what’s best for my swing. I tried heading with a butane torch and after having the heat on the head close to 3 minutes (rotating shaft every 10 seconds) I still could not get the head to budge. I decided to pick up a heat gun to see if that was more successful and with a similar technique, heated the hosel for nearly 10 minutes and the head was 200*+ and still no movement of the head. Is there something I’m missing or doing incorrectly?

Are there any tips or tricks to loosen stubborn clubs? I also tested an Apex Pro cf16 that I wanted to swap heads with and was not able to get that off either. The Maltby club I built used epoxy #EPX4

Use a propane torch. Butane or a heat gun won't get hot enough.

Sometimes the fit is so tight that you’ve broken down the epoxy and it’s friction making it stubborn. I recently had a head that I thought for sure something funny was going on with - in my research I was thinking it may have been like a Ping with pressure fit, using a hosel pin, just something wacky...

In the end, I kept heating and twisting...I’d work on it for a bit, hands would be cramped and about to blister, give it a rest.

I don’t have a full shop setup, so I was going to go to Home Depot and get some 2x4s and make a clamp/vice to give me some leverage. Luckily, my heat/twist routine started making progress and I eventually got the sucked off.

In the end it was just a really tight fit.

I pull exclusively with butane - never had any problems. Propane vs butane doesn't have anything to do with the problems the OP is having. Unless maybe one tries to use one of those super-micro jewler torches. But a constant application of heat for 3 minutes with something like this basic butane torch is going to be plenty to break any golf epoxy: Wall Lenk High Output Professional Torch-LPT-500 - The Home Depot

With steel shafts, are you giving it a good twist when you pull? Graphite can only handle a straight pull (with an extractor) but with steel it's easier to break the bond with a twisting action.

Also, how tight was the dry fit between the shaft and hosel before using the epoxy?

Thank you all for your input. To hit a few of the questions asked before.

How tight was the try fit? For the Maltby club it was relatively tight but not right enough the gravity couldn't hold the head on when turn upright. For the Apex I don't know.

Removal method? I have a basic clamp to hold the club but if I try to twist it spins in the clamp so I have been trying to hold and twist. I don't have a shaft pulled of any kind.

What shaft am I trying to remove? I am only removing steel shafts 1 is a modus 120 the other is KBS Tour V.

I'll give it another chance this morning and try to improve my clamp to allow more torque when twisting. If I really get no where I may need to try and get a propane torch as a few of you suggested. I just worry about damaging the finish or paint with the flame.

Yes I was using the tip of the flame as much as possible.

Well I tried getting them off tonight again and went with a new technique 5 minute of heat gun to bring the temperature up then 1 minute of butane torch. I got 1 of 3 heads off this way and the one that came off was one that I had assembled. I will try again tomorrow on the other 2 heads and if that doesn't work I'll pick up a propane torch and try not to burn the house down.

One thing to clarify - when you say you've got a shaft clamp, are you clamping it in a vice or something else.

You shouldn't need to heat for 5+ minutes to break down epoxy unless you've use an incorrect type or mixed it very incorrectly.

If you've heated the head and have the shaft with the rubber clamp placed in a vice, you should be able to apply some real twisting force and the head should give way. Obviously wear gloves if you've heated the head so much.

At the temperatures you are using , regular shaft epoxy would be producing smoke...

If there is no smoke present , I'm inclined to believe the original JB Weld was used..

It is advertised to with stand engine, including exhaust manifold type extremes.. I believe that puts it in the 400° to 500° or just below glowing red range...

In the the late 90's early 2000s I came across several clubs that that stuff was used.. Apparently a nearby local " builder" was using it for his assembliies.... I had no other option than cut and drill the remaining tip from the hosel...good luck...

I hope they arn't JB welded in place. That would be beyond my accessible tools. If i cant get it in another or with a propane torch ill being it to a shop an pay to have them pull it. I do have hope that since the club I put together came apart i shouldn't have a problem building up and pulling other shaft options.

But you were able to pull one, right?

I’ve had this issue come up before, not with respect to factory installations, but with respect to installations that I did with too much epoxy. With a butane torch, you just need to be patient and you need to make sure that you are hitting all areas of the hosel, especially the lower part. I use gloves and twist the head while holding the grip (for steel shafts).

I had the opposite problem this week. I was cleaning my irons after going to the range and hitting off grass. The soapy water I used was too hot and now I have to reglue my 4 iron head back on

Well all I appreciate all the help. I tried one more time with butane and heat gun and didn't succeed so I bought a propane torch.

10 minutes later I had the 3 remaining heads off. 30 seconds and a little twist they came right off.

I was trying to be safe and not damage any heads with the heat gun, stepped up a touch with butane, but sometimes a sledgehammer is the right tool.

I use a propane torch and it works great every time, but I’m still very surprised at the difficulty with The Butane.

Great Job!

I probably would have shut it down and thrown them in the corner.

There is no way in the world hot water used in cleaning a golf club should loosen the epoxy bond. I wouldn't trust those to stay together at all.

The hot water that I have at my house is scalding. I made the mistake of soaking the head too long. The 4-iron was the first club I cleaned, so the water was still extremely hot. Hot water can certainly break down the epoxy bond, especially if you are dumb and run water that's way too hot and then soak it for 5 minutes while you watch TV.

I found first applying heat at the heel first and then move up the hosel. Since you built them, what epoxy did you use out of curiosity?

Just some facts to consider.

There is no hard definition for scalding but it usually starts around 135-140 *F. At 140*F it only takes about 5 seconds of exposure before healthy adults will get 2nd degree burns (blisters). Due to building codes, it's not impossible but it is very rare for a home hot water system to be able to go over 140* - 145* F (The current codes in the US usually limit it to 120*F but many ignore that limit). And that's max temp at the source, it will usually drop 5-10* by the time it gets to the tap. For saftey's sake, I'd recommend at least keeping it under 125-130* but that's your business not mine.

There are a lot of different epoxies out there with all types of different properties BUT The cheaper or quick acting golfing epoxies generally wont start to break down until they get to around 155* - 160* F. The better golf epoxies don't break down until closer to 180*F. And for water at 160* F it generally only takes 1/2 of a second of exposure to your skin for 2nd degree burns to develop.

So if you really have been using an epoxy that breaks down with even the hottest tap water, it's probably the crappiest epoxy that I've ever encountered for golf usage and I'd recommend you throw it out and find something better to use.

I use Brampton’s 5&15 and I’ve never had a head come off in play. For fun, I measured my tap water for reference and it came in at 132 degrees. The issue in this case for me was 2-fold I believe:

I left it submerged for 5-10 minutes since I got distracted, which is quite an amount of time at that heat, and I don’t think I prepped the tip perfectly when I installed the shaft.

But, as I mentioned, I’ve never had a failure on the course and this is the first that I’ve had a head come off without intending to remove it. All I wanted to do was share what I thought was a funny “opposite experience” as OP

Nothing wrong with sharing experiences. Just be careful about prematurely jumping to any conclusions.

Brampton's 5&15 has a Tg (break down temp) of 80*C or 176*F.

I'd be more likely to suspect thermal expansion of the hosel causing an already weak glue joint to break (maybe a starved glue joint or weak due to the insufficient prep), not the effect of the heat on the strength of the epoxy. But that's just my guess.
