Does anyone know my hitting coach Rick Shiels?

Recommended Posts

Monte's Instagram is chock full of stuff to learn from, amazing what's on there if you take the time, and his Rebellion Golf has great instructional stuff, some of which I think you can view free right now.

Athletic Motion Golf pretty good on YouTube.

I used to watch Shiels more when it was he and Finch (but that's like three years ago) but mostly for the course vlogs on the UK courses just to see them, kind of drifted away from that. Watched Crossfield for awhile but didn't like the direction he changed to a year or more ago and pretty much quit. Once in awhile he'd have an interesting segment on transition or downswing or something and it was clear he was talking then about some interesting aspects of the swing others started talking about later or were picking up on more - he knows quite a bit, but hard to sort through a lot of the "noise", so I just don't any more and the course vlogs got beyond stupid, but often were borderline juvenile before.

Watch whatever you find fun to watch.

I'm a pretty big fan of Rick...from there, I went down rabbit holes and became a big fan of Golf Vlogs UK and Stacked Golf.

I found Crossfield first, about 6 years ago. Then Sheils. Have added a few more (see below) that have good content or are just entertaining, especially given the current environment.

Clay Ballard - Topspeed golf for instruction.

TXG for equipment.

Rick Shiels for fun.

Lots of interesting ones as well as these, too.

This guy seems like a nut, and I mean that in a good way. I have no idea if his swing advice is any good (seems to be a stack and tilt acolyte), but his energy is infectious.

I would advise against just watching generic YT instruction. Not that it's not produced by good teachers, just that... unless you've already seen a coach and know exactly what you need to do... you may make things worse by trying to fix something that isn't wrong.

If you can't go in person lessons, try to get a video lesson with somebody like Monte or iteach. You can at least get specific guidance for your swing, then if you'd like... follow them online and do drills that pertain to your faults as time goes on. Do not just blindly apply online lessons from random coaches. Just my .02

There are far better instructors (AMG is my favorite at the time and I'm paying for Gankas' stuff right now). For equipment I go to TXG or Michael Newton. Shiels' course logs are OK but I like Strapped for the fluff much more.

I liked Shiels when he first started out, but I've grown tired of him. His reviews are sub par compared to the guys at TXG. I feel like most of the time, he doesn't even bother to actually research the club(s) he is reviewing before actually filming the review. He'll make statements like, "I don't believe these a forged" (clubs says forged right on the back, believe it was a Wilson irons review). Stuff like that annoys me. AS for swing tips, he'd be way down on the list. With all that said, I still prefer Shiels to Crossfield by miles.

Pretty much everything I watch is Instagram and the only info I take on board is from Monte AMG and Jake Hutt. I see AMG as more what actually happens and Monte and Jake is how to try and make it happen. Being from the U.K. it’s a shame that the only guys I trust are from over the pond. I actually live quite near to where Shiels is based.

Honestly watching the same instructors is boring. Also the youtube alograthim is a joke and you get the same people popping up on your feed, The best way to navigate the joke that is youtube and watch fresh and hidden instructors is to narrow you search. I just type 'golf swing' and filter it to show me results for today. And you get not only new content but instructors you otherwise would never had heard about. Thats where you find hidden gems. Youtube does not promote new and better content but instead promotes popular vloggers. Popular on social media does not mean better.

I’d add Larry Cheung, Russell Heritage, and Mike Malaska. Theses guys also don’t sound like rehashes of the others on this list.

Shiels started out good, then sucked, then got better again. But that's for golf content, not instruction. I would look to other guys who communicate well to you. Eric Cogorno is very detailed, and really loves teaching. He also puts out a ton of content. Malaskas is annoying in how he likes to portray him as being different from everyone who's wrong and popular nowadays, but he does have some good points while pretending to misconstrue other teachers' points. Crossfield has pretty much run out of interesting counter points to talk about. Though he has obviously been successful and made some money at this. I would not try to rebuild your swing (ahem, from experience) from youtube instruction since it's hard to understand it all, but you can find tidbits that answers your questions you have about the swing. Oh and AMG is good too. Shows you what actually happens via tech.

I've become a fan of Jake Hutt's instagram. Like Saguto maybe not for everyone, but it's a bit of a nice change of pace. Quick, informative, and helpful. And yes a bit quirky.

Also Marcus Bell and Zen Golf, some rather unique stuff and a good way of explaining things.

I plead guilty that I'm always chasing a new fix/thought/remedy to fix my issues (as Monte will attest to), but I have come across some ideas and info that folks have posted that have been very very helpful. But now that we all have a bit of time on our hands, too much info can be dangerous too!! When I was laid up at start of the season a few years ago (a 60 year old man catching Mono - really?!) I fell into the YT trap for a month to find the fix. When I came back to play, I could barely take the club back I had so many thoughts racing thru. And sadly to report - nothing changed in my game!!

Be safe everyone!!

I enjoy Tom Saguto a lot. He is energetic, entertaining and explains things in a swing with such great clarity and simplicity. I get so pumped up to hit balls or put into play what he teaches. He is a stack an tilt advocate, so some might be turned off right away. I think his way of explaining that swing is easier to understand and implement than others I have watched.

I enjoy Rick's videos. Don't really look to him much for instruction but they're always pretty fun and he seems like such a geniune guy out having fun.

Golf Sidekick is really great - I dig his strategic approach to scoring. EAL of course - his work is just beautifully shot and produced. The one he did at the Miura factory was probably my favorite. His newer one done for the Open was great to watch as well.

My swing went off the rails about a month ago....total breakdown.  I stumbled upon a Saguto YouTube of him talking about Ben Hogan’s swing.  Long story short, I paid the $99 fee and became a Saguto golfer.  Still working on the transition but I’m a believer.
