Non-Ho thinking through the budget sleeper bag!

Recommended Posts

A long-winded quarantined look at my latest bag.. I'm into finding non-new clubs that each have a role esp. ones that fly under the radar. You may find that: One, I'm cheap. Two, I like variety and being a little different. Three, if I let go of some rationale, maybe I'd be a ho like many a golfwrxer lol. If I like the look, feel, and forgiveness (normal mishit low on face), it's probably staying in for a long time.

D: Adams XTD Ti, Aldila RIP Phenom NL 60 TX. Old trusty bomber, anti left. Serious sleeper. Preferred my heavier 70M4 black tie, but liked the NL's look, so I matched the SW and balance point with lead tape on shaft. Trackman showed spin around 2000 even on thin hits for me. Couple heads and shafts to swap sometimes.

3W: Haven't carried one in a while, but just picked up a TEE CBX 13.5 Hzrdus black 75 6.0 as a driver replacement if I'm off with the big stick. Haven't even hit this yet.

5W: Titleist 915F, D+80X. I know, not a sleeper. I have plenty of length for courses played, so this is mainly a tee club if I want more than 3 iron, but it's more workable than an 18* driving iron. Easy height but can hit stinger and shape left/right.

3I: Srixon Z 545, C Taper Lite X. Accurate driving iron 230s. Flushing a 3 iron is <3.

4I: Miz MP-H4, CTL X. This thing's crazy easy and high launch but can still hit a stinger. Such an awesome club, hybrid-like versatility but better feel and confidence. Can leave 5 iron out if I want. I could easily game 2-PW in H4.

5-PW: MP-54, CTL X. Only clubs in the bag I bought new and was fitted into. They've got it all for me.. more forgiveness than other MPs, and I liked feel better than JPX forged.

50: Adams CB2, X100. Another Adams sleeper, it's almost as if my MPs came with a gap wedge (might try a prettier CMB though :). The rounded sole is like a nice skid plate for chipping and pitching, like V soles..

54, 60: OG CBX, DG Wedge. I played a "reverse combo" set with a blade MP-68 3 iron and these wedges, haha. But with forgiving/versatile scoring clubs, I think it makes sense if you can strike well and want to keep players clubs at the top of your bag. Wide V sole tapered toward heel is money for me on full to greenside shots. Don't know my handicap but I normally shoot 5 to 10 over. Seriously even lower cappers please try a CBX LW. This V sole I think is more useful for me than a C grind - forgiving on fat hits, easy out of sand, rough, and tight lies.

Putter: Cure CX3, SNSR contour grip. Sleeper putter brand for real. Confidence inspiring. Let's me focus on solid strike and being smooth.

If you want an inexpensive driving iron experiment, try the Dynacraft 17* 3I head below. Paired with Aldila RIP alpha 105X it's a cheap Beeeeast, just sidelined because I'm learning to do more with 5W.

Once courses are back open, I might just carry 15 clubs because I only play for fun, or drop the 5 iron for 14. 5W, Srixon 3I, 4I, GW are firmly in. 3W TBD.

I like the fact you did it on a budget and used what fits you and your game. And yes Adams did not make bad stuff yep look at my signature and you will see I am sorta an Adams fan. I will also say you are not brand agnostic either. I always say play what works

Hah yeah 7 brands! Should try a Cally driver to make it 8, but Adams is/was cool :). Still not as weird as Tom Lehman's bag.

Anyone else ever drop a middle club? Prefer tee options and 4 wedges. I honestly don't think I'd miss 5 iron. It's around 200 for me which 4 can cover, and I don't expect great scoring from that distance. Would probably shoot the same with a half set anyway..

I have had the times that I had 8 different brands including 3 different wedge brands in my bag. Right now I am sorta tame for me on my main bag only 4 brands oops forgot I switched back out my putter this morning for a trusty old (Acushnet pre Titleist) Bulls Eye. My minimalist bag for now is sorta boring ( 8 clubs) all Macgregor but vintage with persimmon woods

Played a while without 3 wood, so 14. As mentioned above, once golf is back I'll either carry 15 or drop 5 iron for 14. Hoping CBX 13.5* can be like driver #2 that I can draw or fade, unlike driver which just loves to fade.
