Recommend A Current Driver Head To Cut The Spin - I Just Can’t Find One That Spins Below 2900!

I did some testing with some of the driver heads I have sitting around (going to sell all the ones that don’t make the cut) and did some testing with my Ping G410 Plus. Had the club set to 8*. Did a 20 drive set and averaged 3010 rpm with 116 club speed and 15.06 launch. Clearly too much spin. Also tried my TS3 8.5 set at 7.75 and got similar numbers (3096 spin). Also had a SiM Max set at 8.5* a couple weeks ago that was averaging 2882 for a 20 ball set. Shaft in all these tests is a GD AD IZ 7X. I love this shaft so don’t want to make a change there.

I’d love to cut some rpm off my drives but can’t seem to find a head to get the job done. Got any recommendations for something that will really cut the spin. Looking for something that is a current generation driver, nothing older than 2019.

I was thinking either a SiM or 410 LST but anything else out there that you’ve had good experiences with at cutting spin, not just advertising that it should be lower spin?

The TS4 is the lowest spin driver I'm aware of. If then you still can't get spin down to where you want it I'd suggest a different shaft. But the way you deliver the club and strike will have more effect on launch and spin than any head or shaft

Without changing the shaft, and where your numbers are at, I would entertain the idea of a ball change depending on what you’re using. If you are using a spinny ball, it may be worth looking into something like a TP5x or AVX. That low of loft and that high of a launch angle, you have to be swinging up on the ball, so it will be tough to cut spin more than you already have without sacrificing significant forgiveness in the head.

A ball change can certainly deliver 3-500 rpm reduction to get into the 2500 range and would be cheaper too

Agree here. Even as far as Pro V1x Left Dash. I hit up too much on my driver which is why I posted what I did above. I'm 5 up or something like that which really means my 8.5 TS3 is not acting like an 8.5 at all. This is the lowest spinning head I tested.

The delivery conditions will definitely play a role too like you said. If they are using that low of loft with that much of a launch angle, they may have an open face to path to achieve that much launch and spin despite the static club loft. If that’s the case, new impact conditions are needed

If you refuse to change the shaft, then what is the point of chasing numbers? Either you want better numbers or you don't.

It may be likely that a lot of it is in your swing or delivery. But even then, if you make changes to your swing, when it comes to optimizing your numbers, you are handcuffing yourself if you are attached to a specific shaft.

Since you’re in to out I doubt you’re leaving the face open to create that much spin, and the prov1x is a good spin killer, but an avx or tp5x may help even more with the driver.

Other than that, the only other issue I can think of would be strike location. Even if you’re middling balls, slightly higher than dead center is going to take some spin off, but I’m guessing this is something you know since it’s pretty much common knowledge nowadays.

With your speed, you only need to get it down to around 2500 for great results, which can be accomplished a few ways:

finding a ball that fits you best

a low spin head with weight that can be moved forward, m3 maybe? Cobra?

a shaft that has a profile that matches your swing to take a degree or two off your launch angle, which will bring down spin

If you have access to a reliable LM, I would try out all these options and any other suggestions that get thrown out here as well. Being tied to that shaft is going to reduce your ability to meet your goal of reducing spin to the head, the ball, or your swing.

Anyway, good luck and definitely update with what you try and your results. I don’t know about everyone else, but I love LM data

If you have access to an LM that can give club data, you should check your delivered dynamic loft.

Also, use foot powder spray or impact tape to check the face impact location (don't rely on feel to judge impact quality).

Those are by far the two biggest influences in the amount of spin you generate.

Face-to-path numbers would be nice as well.

But without knowing and figuring out the true root cause first, any attempt to fix is just going to be a random trial-and-error exercise.

First thing you need to check is strike location. Are you absolutely certain you are catching it in the middle? Slightly lower on the head and heelward is going to cause excessive spin, on the order of about 600 RPMs extra over what is ideal. So if you are impacting heelward/low it could be an easy fix just to chop the driver down or use a longer tee, depending on what the issue is. That 600 RPMs gets you right near the 24-2500 RPM sweet spot. If you are STILL getting those numbers out of a centred strike that doesn't surprise me all that much considering you are hitting 3 of the spinniest drivers out right now. Anything Titleist spins like a top for most players, the G410 really isn't much better even in the LST imo, and the SIM Max is meant for forgiveness, and what equals more forgiveness? MOI and spin. Ballspeed also creates spin and at 116 mph you should have about 170-175 ball speed on a really good strike provided the head is efficient enough for you. You're not THAT FAST in the sense that you shouldn't be able to find anything.

Take a look at the Taylormade SIM 8*, Mizuno ST200G, or Callaway Mavrik SZ (Triple Diamond if you can find one would be ideal). Then if you are STILL spinning it around 2900 go get a lesson because your delivery is hopeless lol.

Assuming a reasonable face to path (not slice or big fade), the the problem is likely one of too much dynamic loft. Which generally comes down to too much reverse shaft lean (hands too far behind the ball at impact). Lots of factors that can lead to that e.g.: trying to hit up, ball too far forward or teed up too high are some of the more common ones but it's certainly not limited to those.

What are you using for an LM?

Edit: I'm dumb. Agree with the below. If you're only 2 up but have that much launch with an 8* head you are adding a ton of dynamic loft at impact. Nothing is going to drop the spin unless you can get that under control. You should be getting very solid carry numbers with that speed.

Use your phone and take some video from the front to see if your casting a little. The biggest thing is you are using a 8 degree driver and getting a 15 degree launch with a +2 AoA. That means your swing is adding a decent amount of loft which is usually a sign of casting the club face. At your club head speed your launch should be around 11. Try hitting some drives where it feels like you are trying to hit a punch shot and see what happens.

Obviously a few swing tweaks are the best option, but try the 440 version of the original Epic SubZero. That head is crazy low spin. I've tried M3 440, Tour M5, TS4, etc. They don't even remotely compare to that head in terms of low spin.

I was going to say the M5 Tour, but does sound like something in the swing is causing spin... A head with lots of adjustability will be a start though to see if you can dial it in a little better.
