Woodworking?

Gotta do something during the qua-Rona-tine, might as well get something useful done. Any other WRXers out there enjoy doing woodworking/carpentry projects in their spare time?

I recently finished off a tortilla press since I couldn't find one I liked to buy. My next two projects are finishing off some new storage areas for my wife (converting an unused hall closet between the bedroom and bathroom in our master suite into a makeup vanity, and building a corner shelving unit) and then making some raised garden beds so we're ready for spring. Earlier in the winter before the pandemic even started I also finished off a big-a** blanket ladder, and once it warms up outside a bit more I'm redoing our deck railings and converting part of it to a screened in 3-season room.

Also since this is WRX, I did make myself a golf storage organizer for the garage that holds 3 bags (mine, wife's, spare parts) and has enough shelving space for all my shoes and balls.

The lack of club-ho'ing has also freed up some cash that I'm now redirecting towards tool ho'ing; my new table saw just got shipped out this morning.

Anyone else replacing the smell of grass with the smell of sawdust? Figured we could share project ideas and tips/techniques, help out people who might just be starting this as a hobby in the interim.

I’m also a woodworker and very thankful to have an activity like this to help keep me busy. Like golf, good woodworking is an exercise where you have to learn good fundamentals and put in the time to become proficient. It’s very satisfying to constantly learn new skills, which are implemented in new projects.

When I found out that a Shelter in Place was coming, I bought enough lumber to keep me busy for a while. I’ve been working on a few shop projects such as a shooting board, and fine tuning my tablesaw crosscut sled. I ordered the hardware for a Moxon vise and built one, and it’s been fantastic for my garage shop where I can’t mount a permanent large woodworking vise. I built a nice box for my Dowelmax jig, and when my wife saw it she placed her order for a jewelry box, which is what I’m working on now. Next up I’m making a nice mallet from hard maple and walnut.

Retired old guy that does a fair bit of Woodworking... plus I enjoy teaching my little Granddaughter a bit of the trade too.. She made this cutting Board for her Mom.. she was quite proud of herself. She selected the woods to use and the pattern and sanded it and then oiled it up. Love the Rigid table saw - I added the router to it the day after I got it.

I don't know how I got by without one for years... best thing in the shop besides the table saw. Easy to make. for mine the ends are 3/4 plywood glued together for a 1 1/2 thick end piece - that way you can clamp or push on it without any deflection.

Nice, I actually have to go buy some 3/4" ply for another job and was debating getting a full sheet cause I don't need that much, but now I do!

What do you use for the guides on the bottom? Just ripped strips I assume that fit snug into the grooves in the table?

When I had my garage woodshop setup I made fishing lures mainly for the striped bass guys in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. I love wood lathes. Hand turned, sealed, thru-wired, painted, epoxy coated, etc.

I used straight grained Cherry just because I had some.. I think tight grained Maple would also be a good choice. the Base I used 3/4" just like you are thinking. Anything thinner has too much warp..

And after you have it all together -- use some Wax on the guides -- it slides smooth as a baby butt after you do that.
