Installed shaft length

My question is regarding the finished shaft length of a shaft for Mizuno 919 tour.

I am between modus 130x and Project X 6.5 both soft stepped. I really like the feel of the Modus but 129g is too heavy over 18 holes. It's good for 12-13. No way for 36. The spin and flight are perfect. I would bend 1° strong to keep spin and flight in check with the soft stepping.

Modus claims that cutting an inch removes 3 grams of weight.

So, a 4 iron shaft for the 5 iron @40". Playing length 38.25". Would the 40" shaft be cut 1.75"? That would be almost 6 grams of weight loss.

Or am I way off here. Hopefully someone can set me straight.

Thanks

Sorry but you are a bit off here in your thought process and the math. The cut shaft length is NOT the playing length. Those are two different numbers. The club will play longer than the cut shaft length because the head will add to that length. So if you want the club to play 38-1/4, the cut shaft length will need to be shorter than that. Usually somewhere between 1" and 1.5" - but every head model can be a bit different. So you're looking at a cut shaft length between 36-3/4" and 37-1/4" - so dropping very roughly 8-10 gm.

The only really proper way to cut shafts to length (or to determine that length) is to:

1) install (dry fit) the shafts into the head.

2) Put in a club ruler (DIY club rulers are easy to make if you don't have one)

3) mark out the desired playing length (many subtract 1/8" to account for the grip cap).

4) (recommended but optional) repeat - measure twice cut once.

5) cut shaft where you marked it

Now if you're curious about weight you can just weigh the cut shaft - or just multiply the length of the section cut off by that 3 gm.

Make sure that you will like a shorter than stock length club. I had a set of irons built one inch short at the recommendation of a fitter and I HATED them!! I wanted to cry they felt like toy clubs for kids. They had tip weights to try and get the swing weight up so after I added shaft extensions the swing weight was too high. I ended up buying a set of pulls here on WRX and reshafting a brand new set of clubs. Lesson learned for me.

Good to know. To be honest I wasn't sure I had. It wasn't really clear why you were interested in the cut shaft weight vs the uncut shaft weight.
Generally if static weight or shaft weight is too high, going shorter to drop the static weight isn't a very good solution. You'll typically end up with a swing weight that's too low - or rather you'd need a lot of additional head weight to compensate properly and then that additional head weight will effect the stiffness of the shaft. The real solution to a static weight that's too high is to find a shaft model that's lighter. e.g. if the modus 130x is too heavy, then look for a 125 gm or 120 gm shaft or maybe even a 115 gm shaft.
Now if it was the swing weight that was too high, then going shorter can help some but the best way to check that out is to simply choke up to find the better playing length by feel (e.g. try choking up 1/2" first and see how it feels, then maybe try 1" and compare).@Bridges A 38.25" 5 iron isn't shorter than stock length, it's actually a bit longer.

Stuart. Hope you see this.

Couple more questions.

1). If the modus looses 3gr per inch and final cut length for Mizuno, assuming 1.25" bbm final of 37". It will play approximately 123 gr? If so that's about where my fitter was to be. Straight in. That seems like a lot of weight loss? Is it because this shaft is so butt stiff?

2). How much weight does a dynamic gold x100 loose when it's butt trimmed?

Thanks.

The weight loss will generally be similar if the uncut lengths are also similar. It's not exact, but the general rule of thumb is to divide the uncut shaft weight by the uncut shaft length. That gives you a rough estimate in grams per inch of the weight lost when cutting down the shaft to various lengths.

So for the modus 130x, a 129 gm, 40" (uncut length) 4 iron shaft gives us 3.225 gm per inch. If we cut that down to 37" that means we drop 3" * 3.225 gm/in = 9.675 gm for a final cut shaft weight of 119.325 gm for the original soft stepped scenario.

You can take the same approach with the DG's or any other shaft, but I think you'll find it doesn't change all that much. So it's really a pretty typical weight loss. It only seems big if one is only used to thinking in terms of the uncut shaft weights.

If a fitter recommended a target of 125 gm shaft weight, are sure they were talking about cut shaft weight and not the uncut shaft weight?

Keep in mind that when fitters are talking about target shaft weights - they can be talking in terms of either cut shaft weight or uncut shaft weight. Both approaches can be equally effective as long as one is consistent. In fact I think it's much more common to work in terms of uncut shaft weight - largely because it's easier. You can work right from the specs w/o having to do any of the math.

For example, I know my target shaft weight is 90-100 gm - but that's the uncut shaft weight, not the cut shaft weight. I don't think I even ever bothered to calculate the cut shaft weights. Even when I measure them out before installing for my records, I don't really of those numbers as fitting targets.
