Golf During Lockdown (MOD EDIT: NO POLITICS, COVID-19)

I've been getting out every other day or so, playing 5 or 6 holes at a time. Here's a photo from yesterday:

Where I'm at the courses are closed, thats fine by me better safe than sorry, I do feel bad for the owners its going to be a rough start to the season. I have been going to the park early in the morning when no one is around and hitting some wedges at different targets, something I do during normal seasons for practice.

The course I frequent is closed, and I'm okay with that. If there's a positive in this along those lines, the groundsmen have been kept busy (and employed) trimming trees, removing dead ones and otherwise grooming the course. We had drought conditions last summer, so when the course finally opens it should look great.

Yeah, I'm operating under the same restrictions as y'all - stay-at-home orders and closed courses. But where there is a will and some cajones, there is always a way. Just make sure you are out of sight of the clubhouse and any roads, and you can play a few holes before anyone is the wiser.

I would also add that you need to treat the course with the utmost respect. I've been fixing every divot and ball mark I come across. I've even been eradicating the odd weed on the putting greens. That way, when you get busted its just trespassing and not trespassing and vandalism! :)

Lucky you. They've actually opened the courses again? We are looking at the end of April at the earliest around here, I am afraid.

I haven't been able to play, stay at home order was issued before the weather fully turned. Hopefully we can get out eventually, but I don't think it will be soon. I'm fine with it since it seems like more people are out and about after the stricter stay at home order was issued, but I am really jonesing to get onto the course.

A little odd for me. We have been down south for a number of months and the courses are actually open. I've played a few times (walking) and I almost feel guilty. Things back at home (Michigan) are pretty tough but things down here (SC) are pretty laid back. My wife won't play. It just doesn't feel right to her.

We got lucky here in NC, the state issued order specified golf is an acceptable form of recreation, with the recommended precautions of course. Everywhere around me is open except for one muni, but only a week and a half ago there was no noticeable change to their golf operations, I saw groups pulling flagsticks and using ball washers without a care in the world. I'm getting out there a couple times a week, walking only and bringing my own water bottles/snacks. Hopefully through the next couple months courses are able to remain open for play.

In Virginia, or at least where I live, courses are still open and the "stay - home" order was just released, I received an email from my local course (Lee's Hill) stating that the course is open and ready for business...I am in Afghanistan, so it really don't matter to me very much...

I'm in Montana at the moment. Most of our courses are open. They're getting creative with avoiding touching the flagstick. Some courses put pvc inside the cup so the ball rests just below the lip of the hole. Other courses lift the cup above the lip and you just putt into the cup. Today however we were hit with half a foot of snow.

In my community in southern New Mexico we have two private courses.....both closed for now, but maintenance workers are very busy. Hopefully, the courses (or one anyway) might open in a week or so, with strict restrictions (private carts only, no flagsticks, no rakes in bunkers, no refreshments on course, but restrooms will be open). There are not many folks here during the winter months, & the part-timers won't be showing up till May probably (if then.....as they'll be quarantined for 14 days). All folks arriving in our little town now are quarantined for 14 days (supposedly). Our county has no cases of the virus so far, & we hope to keep it that way....I doubt that'll happen though. There have been a few folks seen on the courses playing a few holes, but I don't know if they've been reprimanded or not. We're all getting pretty desperate to play, and my husband is worried about his life (he doesn't play golf). He knows I need to hit something with a stick in the worst way!

You down in Parker? I grew up in Denver (Cheesman Park/Capital Hill area) but moved away in 2006 - went to Regis Jesuit just "down the road" from CGC. I was a member of the first class to graduate from the "new" campus in 1991.

I must admit that the only private courses I've ever played in Colorado are the Denver Country Club when I was a busboy there, and Inverness when we used to sneak on the course on New Year's Day. Mostly played Kennedy, Wellshire, and Park Hill munis growing up. The Regis High School team used to play and practice at Willis Case when we were at the North Denver Campus, but since moving I think they use the Valley Country Club.

I certainly feel privileged to have grown up in Colorado, but going back now, I'm glad I moved away. I don't think I could hack it there anymore.

In Richmond, VA courses are open. Rakes are removed, I have seen pool noodles in cups, flags remain in. I noticed the lack of portapotties when my 8 year old had to go and we made a beeline for clubhouse! Many ranges shut down at courses, so I think this season will not be best for scoring. Driveshack and Topgolf are closed.

If anything can go right, it might!

Pretty much the exact opposite of Colorado - Alabama first for graduate school (War Eagle!) and presently in Baltimore - aka America's armpit or "The Land of Pleasant Living" depending on who you ask. Over the course of four years I've only witnessed one shooting, so I think I'm doing pretty good so far.

Yes I have been doing the same thing. Here in SoCal probably 90 plus per cent of the courses are closed, but I’ve played 4 different courses just walking on at a spot far from the clubhouse and playing nine. Walking briskly and just hitting to the middle of greens since there are holes but no pins. No one has said a thing and I’m not the only one out there either. I see people scattered around here and there. Frankly, it seems much safer then the hiking trails which at times are way too crowded. I carry hand sanitizer and use it on my hands every time I take a ball out of the cup giving myself putts that are close at all to avoid touching anything. It’s kind of relaxing, kind of not. That and grocery stores ( wife and daughter and I take turns shopping) are the only places I go. My wife was the one that actually encouraged me to do this, amazingly enough. She’s says it good exercise but since I workout all the time anyway, I suspect it’s just to get me out of the house for a couple of hours.

Awesome! I am glad to know that I am not the only one doing this. I've only seen one other guy in my forays to the course so far. He was carrying one club and walking a dog - so not legit golf.

I've been reluctant to go out with others. Seems like it will attract more attention and it kind of negates the "I'm social distancing" argument if you do happen to get busted. I figure if I am out there alone, am completely respectful of the course and social distancing rules, then the most that will happen is they tell me to leave and not come back.

Yes I hear you. I have played mostly by myself which I prefer. Once in a threesome at a country club where one of our group was a member and the course was closed but “open” in that they were not enforcing it. Members could walk on if they wanted. I’m sure most private clubs are doing this, no carts, no food, no staff, no pins, but if you want to play, go for it. Even though we were practicing social distancing it didn’t have the same feel. There were probably seven or eight groups out there, one of them a five some. Not smart. I wouldn’t do it again. We were careful, but three is two too many. Since we were there more or less legally with a member it wasn’t the fear of getting busted, just too many people.

The Governor of Texas issued a shelter at home order earlier this week. It was clarified the next day that golf courses could remain open, but counties and cities could make a local decisoin. Many of the courses had already issued local orders restricting golf. DFW is made up of 4 fairly equally sized square counties. 2 of the counties have banned golf. The other 2 allow it, but it's hit and miss on courses that are open. Those that do have modifications in place. (Walking HIGHLY encouraged, only 1 player per cart, noodle in the hole, etc)

Almost all of our courses in Kansas City are open for play with restrictions. Some closed early, but then opened back up after seeing others were staying open with the restrictions. I joined a local to me (18 miles away) City owned course that is surprisingly well kept and is fairly challenging, but the best part is $50 a month for unlimited golf with no tee time restrictions. It has been a life saver for sure. It’s not horrible to walk , and I walk as much as I can...

I think I played every day this week. It’s been refreshing to witness how green the course is becoming, as our grounds crew starts getting fairways and tee boxes in shape. I can’t wait until all of this has passed, and I don’t have to putt at a PVC pipe covering the hole (granted it does make chip-in’s a little easier).
