Why would PGA object to Tiger/Phil + QBs charity play?

Have read of possible tiger+peyton vs phil+tom corona charity TV special. Seems a reasonable idea to me, somewhere out in the desert with no fans, few TV cameras, guys/gals with 6ft sticks enforcing correct social distance, etc.

Then i read that maybe the almighty PGA may reject this event but i cannot understand why on earth the PGA would do so. And cannot tiger/phil play a match without the PGA blessing? Puppets or slaves, can't say which.

Not that long ago many people were complaining about the AT&T and having to watch amateurs now suddenly many think this would be a good watch. Anything that generates charity dollars isn't all bad but can't say I'm remotely intrigued about this as a spectacle. If the players can't properly interact because of social distancing then this kind of event (pro-am charity) really would seem pointless.

Ultimately I doubt the PGA Tour could stop Tiger & Phil but they've shown the Tour zero loyalty with regards to the PGL so it doesn't surprise me. It very much looked like the PGA Tour reluctantly sanctioned the last Match. Brand considerations must be in their thinking, the first Match was bad for the PGA Tour brand.

Here is the statement I see

Doesnt seem like there is any objection whatsoever. They can’t approve an event in the current environment so they are just saying what’s going on at the moment.

“Discussions along these lines have been ongoing for quite some time, but nothing has been approved by the Tour," the tour said in a statement Wednesday.”

PGA Tour approval for Tiger-Phil event on hold

PGA Tour approval for Tiger-Phil event on holdFrom the linked article. An event such as this would need PGA Tour sanctioning, as the tour controls players' media and television rights. That is why, for example, a player needs a release from the PGA Tour to play a conflicting event, such as in Europe.

None of them will do anything for free so it’s not gonna happen unless the pga guarantees some sort of appearance fee.

Well, i sorta thought that any TV golf would be gladly accepted by viewers as all other sports now 'on hold'. But i do agree with Old Tom that this will not be a competition nor an entertainment as social distance between players, even caddies and players, will be maintained. I'd like to see every PGA guy toss 1% of last year's winnings into a common pot for 'charity' coz there will be loads of anguish during the next 6 months, and probably beyond.

I think i first read on Yahoo. I don't really care what those guys do. As far as whether any pro golfer is beholden to a sponsor as a prostitute is beholden to her source of income, i guess, rather seems that way to me.

I don't pretend to know the authority that the PGA tour has over tour players, but I think it might not be such a great idea to reject the guy who's responsible for 50%+ of your revenue along with the second most popular golfer on tour. Whatever TW and Phil want to do, short of playing 1v1 for The Open Championship or something ridiculous, it will get approved.

Really looking forward to this event. I would have liked to see Curry paired up with one of those guys, but I guess basketball season could start up anytime, probably not a great idea to spend all his time golfing.

Edit: Doing some more research on this, I'm not sure Payton and Brady are the right choices for this kind of match. Both are 8-10 handicap. Better to get MJ and Curry, both are 1-2 handicap, and both have more charisma than the two football players.

The first Match was terrible for the PGA Tour's brand and I don't see how they would have benefited from it financially. Approval is reluctant but granted based on who it is.

OK if this proposed event is a 100% charity match then it's different.

I don't think they have been turned down, has a lot more to do with what you said about a lot of moving parts. It's not like it's easy to set this up in a constantly changing environment where states are opening and closing courses based on the way the wind blows. Hard to get everything in place only to have to scramble to get it all done in a different city/state/whatever. Without the assurances like that, there's going to be some time before we get much in the way of solid details.

As long as the PPE donated to hospitals is less than the FedEx Cup winner’s prize, the PGA Tour will give this match their stamp of approval

Not that anyone cares, but how does the PGA Tour have it both ways? On the one hand, they say that the players are independent contractors, and on the other, they claim to have rights over the players' media and TV rights? Still trying to figure that one out.

I'm sure Mickelson and Tiger get most of their money from other income streams. So no biggie for them. But what about No. 150 on the money list? Would he have to get TPGAT's approval to do some regional or local made-for-TV event to make an extra buck?
