Thinking of dropping 56 and just going 52 & 59?

I would really like to add a driving iron to the bag and realized yesterday that I hardly ever use my 56? Has anyone done this or am I crazy?

I wouldn't be able to only have the two because I get 3 different yardages out of each wedge (50/54/58), which covers pretty much all the distances I need inside about 120 yards. If I only went 52, 58 then A) my top end would get reduced down to about 112 yards and leave a small gap between the PW, and I'd also lose some granularity in the 80-100 yard range. I also like having a 54* for bunker shots out of thick beach-like sand or for those really tough 30-40 yard bunker shots.

For me, if I need to hit a fairway I'd rather just use my 4h or even 3w. Scoring comes from having really good game inside 100 yards... not having a fairway finder (For me, anyway).

Should work if you’re careful not to lay up to your 56* distance. But it will happen once in a while and those are the shots that count, usually. I went 48/56/60 for a while and had a few occurrences when I was in 52/GW range and had to either play a half swing PW or hammer my 56. That sucked but you can mostly control this by laying up to “good” distances.

Now, I choose either the driving iron or the wood, depending on my form and course conditions, so I’m using 52/56/60 currently. Gives me peace of mind I’m not getting into trouble within scoring distance.

I go 46/52/58 and I feel that covers all the shots I need to play. Adding another wedge the wedge would complicate decision making for me around the greens. Plus I love my 5 wood and that would be a big loss for me to remove it from the bag.

I believe this all depends on what your PW specs are. If 46* then it’s perfect although might want to get the 59 to a 58. I played 53-58 in high school and then ended up going to 50-54-58 in college and have kept that since. Driving irons are very versatile in my opinion. Think it’s good call but keep the 56 just in case

... I think some of the decision depends on your swing speed and distance. I flight my wedges and with a 46* pw I rarely hit full shots with my 52* or 58* so the gaps are perfect for my game. I hit my 58* right at 85 and my 52* at 105. My 28 yr old son with a much higher swing speed hits his 60* lw 100-110 so he needs more wedges to cover the scoring yards from 150 and in.

Exactly, great recommendation. Pros seem to be equally split between 52-56-60 and 52/53 and some sort of LW 58/59/60. They are obviously the best in the world at this and know how to manipulate the club to do what they want. They also almost all seem to be 12* of bounce or less on their wedges, you never see a retail D or K in their bags with the retail bounce specs.@Wardonation I played some of my best wedge years ever keeping it simple at 52/58 in the original SpinMilled Oil Cans. Both 8* of bounce and I could hit those basically out of everywhere. Same with some a 52/56 combo I had with some Nikes with custom grinds, both 10* of bounce and never had trouble getting up and in. If you know how to use them and don't see the 56* come out of the bag much but find yourself reaching for that low-hot-runner more often, then by all means, do it.

Try it. Personally, I would miss a wedge more than a DI.
