All of a sudden, I'm interested in Vintage Clubs!!!

Recommended Posts

I have no idea why, but just this week, I'm all interested in vintage clubs. Yesterday, on a "ho" whim, I bought a set of 1969 Wilson Staff Bulletback irons off ebay. I'm now going full ho mode, looking at persimmon woods, and a need to find a vintage sandwedge. I'm also reading up on which modern balls I should play with the woods. I'm even looking at vintage golf bags and head covers. I grew up on these types of clubs, learning to play as a kid in the early 70's, and tons of range time with persimmon woods in high school in the mid 80's, but it's been 30 years since I played with old school woods.

I'm excited to try the woods at my local course. My course was built in the 40's, so it was designed with these types of clubs in mind. I know they'll take some getting used to, and may be discouraging at first.

Has this happened to any of you? Has anyone gone vintage, and never returned???

Hit em good

Not full blown vintage as such, but I have some lovely Joe Powell persimmon fairways I've recently fallen in love with - also not having played actual woods since maybe early 90s. Not exactly forgiving but when you catch em right feel just amazing. I also think they force me to have better tempo and the size of the head necessitates serious focus.

Obvs ProV pictured, but I really like Chrome Softs with them.

Thanks Stu. I've always enjoyed your posts, and greatly appreciate your old school disposition. Its why I enjoy Pepperturbo's posts too.

I will indeed go all through the Classic Golf section this weekend. Like I said, I don't know why, but I've just started obsessing with vintage equipment this week. It may be the nostalgia of my great memories playing golf with my grandfather when I was a youth in the 70's.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting out on the course with clubs that were designed for the course I play.

Hit em good

As far as I am concerned they are vintage. That is the nice thing about classic/ vintage really there are no rules per say as to what year is classic or vintage. BTW I have never owned or hit any kind of Joe Powell but there are some dedicated fans over in the Classic section and they tell me "Smoker" is a very appropriate name and description. I probably play more vintage golf than the average guy and practice with my persimmon woods. Trust me if you can pound a persimmon wood in the screws then a large 460 metal driver is a no brainer. One of my warm up routines is hitting one of my beat up persimmon drivers on the range before playing even somewhat modern golf

Welcome to the addiction. I got into vintage clubs last year and have been enjoying it. Theres just something about persimmon woods that modern metalwoods cant compare to. In terms of balls, you can really use whatever you want, as long as you dont use cheap, rock hard distance balls. Some people use Wilson Duos or any of the really soft low-end balls and some people use Pro V1s.

I grew up playing persimmons as a junior (also laminate ping woods which are bombers’.). My vintage collection varies with MacGregor models from the 50’s to wood brothers, joe Powell’s, and Cleveland classics from the 80’s. Lots of classic putters. MacGregor muirfield irons. Cone join the persimmon golf society on Facebook also. Great reads there, knowledge Sharing, etc... I still play modern clubs but just recently went out with a member of the persimmon Facebook group for a game using persimmons. Used a mix of Cleveland and wood brothers woods and MacGregor blades. I didn’t score any different than my more modern clubs. Driver didn’t go as far nor did irons as the lofts are more traditional but was a ton of fun. A few from my collection.

I'll echo what the others have said. The "Classic" forums are great on this site. So much knowledge over there and a genuine good group. Very non-judgemental bunch of people which I really enjoy. Everyone has their own niche of things that they like but are very respectful of what appeals to others too. We have many different tastes but share the same appreciation of what others find interesting.

I was in the same place as you a couple years ago...curious about the old stuff but really didn't know much about what to look for. But I had a lot of good old memories of the vintage stuff and just started with clubs that I remembered growing up in the game with. A lot of sets that I always wanted but could never afford back then. But there's so much of it now and most of it is very cheap to acquire. So now whenever I see an old set somewhere, it usually comes home with me. And everything at least gets a trial on the range. There is no better feeling than hitting some good solid shots with the old classics. I still play most of my golf with modern equipment, but at least once a week, I will go play a casual round or spend a range session with my old stuff. It's good for the soul. Enjoy your time with it and welcome to the group!

The older stuff is a lot of fun. Find it a lot more interesting playing persimmons than I do modern drivers. Tend to hit them better, also, which was a surprise.

Was already playing older irons.

Got my start after finding a Louisville Smart Driver in the early 2000s, it was in the Miscellaneous driver rack at 2nd Swing. Bought it, it it at the range the same distance as my then bagged driver. Also hit it on the course the same distance as my Ti driver.

Still have that Smart Driver. Traded it, got it back from someone else in another trade, reshafted, but it's here.

Latest thing is thinking about picking up sub-300cc Ti drivers, or even going a little farther back, things like TZoid T3 or Cobra Deep Face. 90s retro golf.
