How do you not rush the transition?

Recommended Posts

Over the years, it seems like Ive tried 100 cues/feels to stay patient in transition, but Ive never found one that I can be really be consistent with. My tendency to pull the handle gets me steep and I hit it all over the place. My biggest issue is "when" to apply the arm speed. I have the most success with trying to keep the trail heel planted until impact, but Ive tried a bunch of things that come to mind...

Squash the bug

Freezers

Pull the arrow from quiver

Hold the trail hip deeper for longer

Zipper away

Hold back/tailbone towards target longer

What are some things that have helped you guys?

My transition consists of a squat and while I do that I'm getting my left arm off my chest while performing the motorcycle move. It's important to keep my back to the target while I go from alpha torque to beta torque as I reach position 4.25 which is when my motorcycle move is completed.

From there I rotate my left hip behind me and my right hip in front of me. By the time I get to impact my motorcycle move is released and I rotate my forearms really hard as I jump off the ground for the ever important parabolic acceleration making sure the club travels around my left leg. I glide to the finish and twirl the club as I watch the ball fly long and straight. It's as simple as that.

Give it a try, you'll get impressive results and lots of compliments from your playing partners about how smooth and effortless your swing looks.

I have a nasty habit of jerking the club from the top. Here's 2 things that help me.

As mentioned above, try accelerating AFTER impact. This allows you to start the transition slower. Speed up your backswing and over all swing tempo to match the faster transition. This actually works really well for me. The swing has to be grooved at this point to not break down with the faster tempo. I hit the ball very well doing this and play a nice high draw with the faster tempo. My slower tempo creates the jerky transition.

From the top, without shifting weight forward, hip bumping or anything like that. Rotate your right palm so it is facing the ground while straightening out the right elbow. Then just let the swing happen. It will feel ‘handsy’

This is not a big move, just a few inches, it should feel like your right palm is facing the ground to the side of your right foot. It will feel like you have released the club, or dumped the lag.

Dont jerk it down, that is the same as pulling your hands at the ball. When your getting it right your arms and the club will feel like the are whipping through the ball while your head stays back.

if your hitting it fat your overdoing it. If your hooking it speed it up. If your hitting it pure DO NOT try to force force more speed.

.

I found some clarity on this when I came across a study that suggests that there are three ways to swing a club. Common is a linear acceleration where peak speed is hit near impact, think Snead or Els. Common is one where peak speeds are attained well before impact, think Rory or Keopka or Jack. Rarer is a dual peeking, think Norman or maybe even Tiger. One has to decide what one is predominantly doing and go from there. I can swing in all three modes but predominant one is early peak. So firing hands and arms earlier and faster leads to better connection, not worse. But if one does that with a linear peak type swing it can be disaster. Aligning the whole body's intent is critical first step, then go from there. This has led me to be more pro active with a left side dominance, transition on, which led me to be more aware of body angles and dispositions both big and small. I now seek a stacking of body parts by P6 that allows for a full right side firing and release. Getting "too quick" or "stuck and slow" can still happen but the framework to fix & adjust is much clearer now.

I see this a lot, including in myself. If you pressure too far right and start pressuring left too late, it’s going to be a quick handle pull.

When clients with this issue (me too) start to drift left just past left arm parallel, it works nearly 100% of the time.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

You gotta have the feel of the hands working down and out toward the ball while your back stays toward the target. Watch tiger in one of his early golf seminars and he will talk about how fast the hands move from the top to the ball in transition...

A good "feel" that works for me is that once I am in my posture and about to start my backswing, I engage my abdominal muscles which helps me in a number of ways:

1. Helps me stay connected in my backswing so my arms and upper body don't get out of sync

2. When you engage your abdominal muscles and start your backswing you'll actually feel tension/energy being stored up between your upper and lower body, which equates to effortless power for your downswing

3. That tension created will reach a point that'll stop you from over rotating in your backswing, it'll be really uncomfortable if you try to push past that point

Hope this "feel" helps a little.
