Understanding blade heads

NOMF72K8CCAZ.jpegI love me some blades but have very little understanding of the different shapes and purposes of these different shapes.

I can tell that on my MacGregor M75 Colokrom irons the mass is directly behind the sweet spot. This is self explanatory.

A couple decades later we have my Haig Ultradyne 2 irons. These set up like a knife going through butter because of the thin top lines. I don’t understand the purpose of the shapes. It doesn’t look like there is any extra mass behind the sweet spot. The front toe seems to gave the extra mass.

Any insight ? Thanks

The Wilson was a very radical design for its time. It's all about moving the weight around to different locations on the club head. Assuming that both of those club heads weigh exactly the same, the Wilson design took weight away from the top line and the hosel (see how much shorter is it?) and moved it more toward the sole and the toe. Most golfers mis-hit the ball by hitting it thin and towards the toe of the club so these would be much more playable for most players.

Yeah the Wilson is more toe bound on weight. Perimeter weighting light so to speak. The Colokrome are inner bound sweetspot. Big issue in older blades is how high hosel neck is. Makes a huge difference on effective sweet spot zone. Also nature of how mass is distributed in the vertical. The difference of a 681 to a T-stamp is very subtle but can be felt in the swinging of both.

As it is explained above, your Ultradyne irons were designed to take unwanted weight (high heel) and redistribute (low toe) with the results being a much easier to hit club for the average golfer. The "over the hosel" shaft feature of your Haig irons was a great design for their time. Again as explained above, look how much weight was removed from the hosel when compared to your Mac's. A huge COG improvement. Your Ultradyne's were truly GI irons for their era.

I'm not sure how much hosel weight was actually saved using the over the hosel design, because a solid steel post of at least an inch in length entends up into the shaft. A normal hosel is thicker, but it is also mostly hollow,

The biggest factor in removing weight from that area was the shortening of the hosel that was made possible by better adhesives.

There is a post buried here somewhere where I asked Charley Penna about the design of that particular MT and how the R&D was performed. I may not have it exactly right, but I think Charley said something along the lines that it was sketched out on a cocktail napkin in a bar one evening. Regardless, it was a very good design for its day.
