Hypothetical thought... pga tour season cancelled... who gets the Fed Ex prize?

Talking with another golf nut in the hospital today... between admitting another Covid 19 patient to ICU ... We had a random hypothetical scenario arise.... bear with me here.

Lets say all hell breaks loose ( it wont ... this is hypothetical fun here between two stressed out Docs on the battlefield of dealing with “ the Virus”) and the PGA tour has to cancel the season ( again ... before yall flame me to a crisp.... its all in fun). No majors. No more tournaments etc. Is the current Fed Ex leader awarded the money? Or... does the tour carry over the points to next season? Is this even a possibility under current PGA tour bylaws that a defined number of tournaments have to be completed to count as a full season?

It lead to some interesting conversation. Posting to see what some more knowledgeable members input is. I honestly dont know the rules to say it couldn’t or cant occur as we are in unusual times. Just curious.

My gut says there has to be “x” number of events played for the season to “ count”.

Yep, FedEx gets my vote too...gotta be a contingency clause in there. Tour shutdown, no champion, no monies awarded.

Now what would be interesting is if a number of them start getting in on some calcuttas and create some content out of it

To your question-I’m almost certain there would be no FedEx Cup champion, just a complete cancellation. If money was still awarded, I’m guessing it would be an equal payout to the top 125, similar to how the tour handled payouts for The Players.

If golf comes back by June, we are in for a fun but weird next couple of seasons. 2020/2021 might have 6 or 7 majors in one “season”.

Depending on what happens, double it next year.

If the season doesn't restart before the scheduled end of the season then there wont be a FedEx Cup for 2019/20. I suspect they'd do some sort of token payout based on standings at the time of the suspension. No way are they doing anywhere near a full payout without the majority of the season, the playoffs and the final. I don't see anyone complaining about this.

It's an interesting scenario that contemplates the modern world ending and yet a FedEd Cup "winner" is somehow determined. If the Majors could be cancelled during all or parts of WWII, I suspect the FedEx Cup in 2020 might suffer the same fate if the Covid19 War lasts into the autumn.

If no more golf can be played in the '19-'20 season, I'm pretty sure that they will roll this season into next's and the prize money will be prorated to next year's.

I think some on here are misguided or misinformed where prize money comes from and how it is generated...Fed Ex doesnt just have a vault full of money they are looking to give away, They may be the Title sponsor but they paid to have that position. and just like Hole in One insurance at your local charity golf tournament they paid to insure they get their money's worth in advertising and also tax write offs, If there is no Tournament or no Tour they aren't getting caught holding the bag so to speak...and CBS may have paid to the rights to televise the Tour but there is nothing to televise. I would guess lawyers from both sides are scrambling to see who owes what to whom and sponsors are looking at their contracts and seeing what they are on the hook for..What is really sad is a lot of charities that used to rely on these tournaments to raise funds are not going to get a check this year

They would probably opt out of awarding anybody for this season if the tournaments are not rescheduled. I think its okay for a redo next season

Ha! I just learned something, never heard of Hole in One insurance or knew it was a thing. Good point about the Charities for sure.

Tournaments usually take out an insurance policy when they offer a car or some other large prize for someone getting a hole in one...We did it at a tournament that the place I worked at was a sponsor...I think the premium was about 1k for a shot at a car worth worth 30k

I am just waiting for the PGA Tour to spin it that the FedEx Cup is more important that the Open now because that was cancelled completely for the year but the PGA Tour is cracking ahead (so far). Shame that their ridiculous “Season of Championships” has been hit (heavy on the sarcasm).

Or turn The Players into a skins tournament and fifth major.
