Any runners out there?

Phireside

Used to be more of a runner a few years back before I got plantar. Nothing too bad but enough to keep me from running for over a year. In that time and leading up to now, I've gotten more in to my golf game and time was spent on golf. Now with our current lock down and courses being closed in my area, I've picked up running again as a solo outdoor activity. It feels like starting from scratch but i'm really enjoying it.

Wondering if there are any other runners/golfers out there and if so what is your golf vs running schedule? Once we get back out on the course i'd like to keep up with my running.

Good For you. I live in Ontario and this "physical distancing" thing has been going on 4 weeks now. I have a 2 year old son who has the energy of meth user. My daughter is 4 and has pretty high energy for a girl. My outlet has been running lately as there is nothing else really to do. I have been on and off since 2014 and average around 300km a year. Unfortunately I had to take 2018 off because of injuries. Last year I was up to 330km with an average pace of 5:55 per km and an average distance of 6.7km.

Late Feb I cut out drinking and starting exercising more (weights and running) so far I am up to 88km YTD, my average speed is 5:45 and average distance is 6.3km. I'm trying to switch up the length of my runs to avoid my body getting use to it and to avoid injuries as 60km of that came in March which is my biggest month since Feb 2017.

Regarding running and golf, I like to do both first thing in the morning because of the humidity so I try to alternate them. I find walking the day after a decent run helps my legs recover so they kind of work hand in hand.

Just started up again, I'm 43 and my serious running has caused havoc on my body. Started at school and just loved running since, more to keep fit than compete. Did my first marathon (London) in 2002 and I went on to do another 8 (London x4, Prague, Paris, Berlin, Blackpool) til I had my first hernia in 2015, that was botched and I went under the knife again in 2018..... And under lock down but can do one exercise on your own I've just started up again.... Mainly to see what my body does and get Fitter. Done 3 x 3 miles thus far and boy its good to run again. Its the easiest way to get into shape, need a good pair of runners and off you go... Enjoy!

good to see a couple others out there. It's laughable how any ability I had at running has completely gone. I'm going to take it slow because I don't want a repeat of PF. I started the original couch to 5K program I did when I first got in to running a dozen years ago and I did not pick it up in the middle. Right back to week one and I don't care if my body tells me it's too easy. Even though my PF was mild compared to many, you just don't want to deal with it. It's a total PITA.

I used to run lots of races including full marathons.

Then I stress fractured my femoral neck while I was training for 2017 Chicago Marathon.

The pain started a month before but I didn't go to see a doctor because I knew they'll tell me to rest and don't run.

I ran with broken hip and been out of commission two years now.

Slowly getting back on running, then COVID-19 happened.

I live in NYC metro area, so we are all locked down since March.

I used to run 5-7 miles a day 3-4 days a week, and ran at least one 10k per month (even as a bigger feller at 6’1” 270 lbs). I ran a 1/2 marathon 6 months after my first back surgery. Then I started having foot problems on and off over the last several years, started in 2016. I’ve pretty much stopped for a couple of years to let everything heal, and with the isolation going on, I’ve started jogging again to get out of the house.

i never was a fast runner, averaging 9-10 minute miles, but had no problem keeping that pace for 7-8 miles at a time. I never ran 10k competitively obviously (waaaaaaay too slow for that), but for fun and charity instead. I still jog at the same pace, but just getting back into it 2 weeks ago, I can’t get more than 1-1.25 miles before I’m huffing and puffing. It’ll come back, just gotta ease back into it and not push too hard. I’m recently healed from a partial tear in a tendon in my foot, so trying to keep from Reinhard g that.

I run a lot, my parents were marathon runners. My mom has a PB of 3 hours and my dad has done a 2:37 and almost made the Olympics.

The past 10 years I have done over 3000km a year in many of them. I did 3500+ twice i think. This physical distancing is getting my distance back up as there is nothing else to do . The past couple of years I had been scaling back

I dont like doing major distances in 1 shot. Usually no more than 15k.

Haven't done a lot of time based stuff but have a sub-5 minute mile aswell as a 28 minute 5 mile (8k)

So yes I run, lol

That is some serious distance. Yeah that is too bad about the foot, but at 270 its hard to avoid foot and leg injuries at that kind of distance.

When I started running 10 years ago I was 220lbs , and had all kinds of leg problems. 5 years later in my running prime I was 170lbs

Runner. Yea. In a past life. In my fighting weight days ( around 174...now 205 ) I ran consistent sub 50secind 400m times. With some 46and change 400m relay splits. Not other worldly , but I didn’t lose many times in our state section, and almost never locally. Pretty fast for a tall guy to boot . Ran cross county competitively in school to keep in shape for track season. And like big red said. We had a big block and small block loop we ran around the school . One was just under 7 miles and one just at 3.5. I did one one day and the other the next. 5 days a week. I did speed work on saturdays and rested Sunday.

didn’t know that I was having the time of my life then.

I wouldn’t call myself a runner but I do run 3x week. Mondays and Wednesdays I run 2.5 miles. I try to run 4 miles on Saturdays. I used to follow the Couch to 5K running plan. It worked for me.

I started running to help lose 13 ponds. I have lost 9.

Married to Callaway Clubs but I cheat with Nike Clubs on occasion.

I would consider myself much more of a runner than a golfer these days. Run about 30-50 miles a week and tend to race a couple of marathons and six or seven halfs in a year. Only get around two or three games of golf in a month generally. We are on lock down here, but allowed out for one daily exercise a day which includes running. Finding motivation a little tricky at the moment, as it doesn't look like any races will go ahead until September at the earliest.
To @Phireside's point about gear, I am a big Hoka fan. I have been rocking the Clifton 6 and Bondi 6 in training and tend to race in the Rincon or Carbon X.

I've ran on and off for the past 6+ years. I started because I was getting bored with lifting. Plus I thought it would be a good way to lose some weight. Only done one half marathon but a bunch of 5ks. I've done one trail 10k which I really liked. I'd probably be more of a trail runner if I had more time to get to the trails to actually run.

As for gear, I've tried a lot over the years....Mizuno Wave Rider (a favorite), Wave Inspire, Saucony Triumph ISO, Guide ISO, Kinvara, Topo Athletic Magnifly (I think), Asics GT-1000 and GT-2000, Hoka Clifton 4 (or 5), Altra Instinct 3.5 and 4.5, and probably a few others I've forgotten. Right now I'm running in New Balance 890v6. I love them. Also working my way back to running in the Altra Instinct 4.5. Much like golf in that I like trying new clubs, I like trying new running shoes too!

I have recently gotten back into running after a long break, my wife and I are training for the mini marathon here in Louisville, but since the COVID has hit it has been pushed back to August. I am averaging about 9 minute miles which is good for me. I completely agree it is a great escape from being stuck at home (especially with a 5 and almost 3 year old). I went and got fit for some shoes and I was put in the brooks transcend 7's they are great!

for shoes, I prefer ASICS. Put a lot of miles on several pairs. I’ve been running in a pair of Nike Free Run 4.0 lately, but the tread pattern holds rocks (the trail I run on is a compact gravel trail) The rocks would come out In the house, and my wife stepped on a couple of them, so I opted for solid soles shoes. Just picked up a pair of ASICS Nimbus 22 last week and put a few miles in them so far.

everything else, whatever cheap moisture wicking shirts/shorts I can find. Currently have UA outlet store clearance rack clothes.

I'm a Mizuno fan boy for sure because of golf, so when I first got fit in to running shoes and they were Mizuno it was great. Mizuno Elixir at the time. Why they stopped making those is beyond me, but the Inspire is a good substitute. They came out with the Catalyst a couple years ago and it was billed as the shoe that former Elixir wearers were waiting for, but for me they were a dud and I returned them. I don't think they lasted past the first or second iteration.

For road work ive worn a lot of ASICS. But my all time favorite are the late 90s Nike windrunner. But I’ve worn the soles off my stock. What I look for is weight plus comfort. I hate a bulky / heavy shoe. Just my personal preference. Probably comes from so many miles in spikes , which literally weigh 5-6 ounces each.
