2001 Masters

I've tried to watch back old sporting events in the last few weeks and struggled to keep the concentration since I know what happens. But Masters videos are one thing I think I could watch again.

Watched the 2001 Masters final day and what a tournament. Given what was on the line, to have 3 of the best players in the world fighting over it at the time. On paper, Tiger, by far the best player in the world, leading by 1 going into the final round and then winning by 2, doesn't seem that amazing. But when you consider that Duval missed a shorter putt than Tiger did at 18, if he makes his and Tiger misses his, then it's a playoff.

Duval played so well, one bad club selection on the entire coverage cost him at 16. He shot a final round 67 that could have been 63 or 64. He had 8 birdies when chasing possibly the GOAT and definitely player that reached the highest point in golf ever. If it wasn't for Tiger, it would have been one of the great final day major rounds. Mickelson also put it up to Woods and was only one shot off with 3 holes to play.

But Tiger, what a machine. There was no weakness in his driving then, you watch Tiger from 2005 onwards and it's always a potential weakness. But back then, 300 down the pipe and exactly where he needs to be. The angle he got on 11, I don't think you can get it any more since they changed the layout of the course. But just driving perfection. Think Tiger brought Duval and Mickelson to their best that day because they knew that they would have to play their best golf to have any chance, and it still wouldn't be enough. That's how good he was.

As they mentioned on the coverage, Tiger held the Masters, Open, US Open and PGA at the same time...and the Players, Canadian Open and World Cup at the time. Never see the likes of him again.

For my money, Duval at his best was better than Mickelson at his best. Duval’s injuries and loss of form deprived us of what could have been an incredible few years.

I agree. I think Duval is another in the long line of "what could have been". Phil was and always has been, an amazingly talented golfer, but just based on how in control of things DD always seemed to be at his best, it would have been really, really fun to watch those 3 all go at each other for a bunch of years.

Rewatching the 2000 masters when duval was in contention I never realized how slow he played. Was my favorite player back then and didn’t bother me but now it does haha

2001 was awesome....top players going at it... and the best came on top...narrowly. I enjoyed it more then Nicklaus, Weiskpoff, watson duel

One thing that has struck me when re-watching those old Masters final rounds was how bad the video quality was even in 2001 and later. It wasn't until about 2010 or so that the picture clarity really improved.

It’s mad isn’t it? I can’t think that at the time I would have been watching it thinking that is terrible but watching them now, it is horrendous.

Seems to be playing fast in the 2001 Masters. Phil and Tiger seem to be playing slow. They have picked it up a bit on the back 9.

Wow did Duval blow that Masters. The putter left him on 13, 16-18.

Speaking of slow play, I rewatched the 1992 Masters. Freaking Craig Parry should have been penalized with his criminally slow play. They were almost 2 holes behind at one point because of that swung that would make Hogan puke.
