I have it on dvd, because that was one you couldn't find most of the time.

I am making more coffee and will settle in and find it while also watching our blizzard!

Snead’s up and down on 16 was awesome.

Great watch. Here are a few observations worth noting:

1. Snead's rhythm & tempo...awesome and cool to watch

2. Greens were really slow & bumpy, I'd guess 6.5 on the stimpmeter. Nicklaus acknowledges several times that shots he pulled off then would be nearly impossible on today's greens

3. Snead hits nearly all of his putts WAY out on the toe. Has this ever been previously noticed/discussed?

4. Ball plugs frequently in what Nicklaus describes as "beach sand"

5. Nicklaus hit some lousy full wedges; Snead hit some wayward drives

6. Snead really takes the club inside, something generally discouraged in today's instruction

7. The guys (generally) don't go after the ball with as much effort/aggressiveness as today's players, especially with irons

8. Nicklaus is a slow player, especially over putts, and makes no apologies for it

9. Nicklaus was more powerful from the tee, but Snead was very impressive also at 51 yrs old

10. The slow greens allowed for many bump & run style greenside shots that would be less effective on today's greens

Great watch. I agree with dpb5031's comments, especially regarding the greens. Those putts were bumping all over the place! I also noticed Snead hitting his putts on the toe sometimes. I know some pros id this to take the speed off downhill putts, but those greens did not look fast enough to warrant that.

On thing I'd like to add to dab's comments: folk were wearing some crazy hats back then! I think I saw a couple of blokes with Tyrolean hats, and as for the women...there was one who appeared to be wearing giant fruit pastel on her head.

Great find! Some other observations-

The course conditions looked similar to a decent local muni today. Nicklaus nearly said as much too.

The new 5th hole is worlds better than the old one.

The 6th is much better without that tree off the left of the fairway.

The strategic elements throughout the course haven’t changed much.

The house off the 10th green sure has changed.

Snead had great touch around the greens.

Jack sure could bomb driver. And hit clutch putts.

Great watch, thanks! I would like to see today's players with these same conditions. I doubt any have ever played greens like those.

Saw it, a bit surprised these guys weren’t better.

Snead putts on toe and also near the shaft connect close to middle.

Greens really were crappy. Basically fairway grass for pro events.

Nicklaus really gives the ball a good wallop.

sneads swing is basically what modern players do. Jack had more pure talent.

You can tell classic equipment really held back their games though. And truly a lot more harder to hit you can tell by their iron shots.

I agree I'd love to see all the matches re-mastered but in terms of starting them up again I'm not so sure. The nostalgia and charm for the period is what makes them so great in my opinion. The matches in the 90s and 00s were good but lacked that charm.

I had some of the same thoughts. The way some folks worship Hogan's swing, I expected him to flush every shot on the Shell match I watched. They were playing in Houston. The announcers were oohing and ahhing over them driving the ball 250. Not that long compared to today but the course was 7000 yds so that's a long course for driving it only 250 and they weren't having any difficulty shooting good numbers.

Greens were slow and bumpy for sure. The pop stroke was popular.

Weren't better in what way. I don't get that observation at all. It's almost 60 years ago.

Your comments make you sound spoiled by the modern tech. “Held them back?” It’s a matter of perspective. Some would say the modern guys have it too easy, The guys that play today would get dusted by those two if they had to play with their equipment and those conditions, which were normal back then.

just appreciate this nugget of golf history, 30 years separated those two, Sneed had over 80 victories at the time and Jack just had the one US Open I believe.

Hogan was in his 50s when that show was filmed. IIRC, he was getting drives out 260-265 or so, and 250 was a good drive back then, probably better than the Tour average. Also, I think Hogan hit almost every fairway and green in regulation in that match. All things considered, IMO he put on an outstanding performance.

Yep, I'm not sure how you watch Hogan in that match and not appreciate his mastery of his golf ball. It was quite a performance.

Thanks for the watch! Loved seeing all the spectators standing on the greens watching them putt. If pros today had to on those greens they'd be laying in a bunker sucking their thumbs after 5 holes!

IIRC, the Hogan-Snead match was delayed by rain, so the course was wet, which contributed to shorter than expected drives.

What's wrong with Tyrolean hats? I think that is going to be my look on the course this year, if we get onto our courses.
