Division II school cancels men's golf

Read a few articles this morning on non revenue generating college sports and it sounds like a lot of institutions have been mulling this for a few years now. Seems like they are all going to use COVID as the catalyst to start shuttering programs. Don't expect it to hit any of the big time programs but many of the smaller programs could vanish.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Going to be such a shame. For starters, less golf programs makes it even harder to play college golf. I feel bad that many will miss out on just the aspect of college golf competition. I didn't play golf in college (it was football and I had zero chance of going pro), but the aspect of competition during those years was unforgettable. Perhaps various golf clubs at that level will fill the void?

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

Nope. I don't see how you could cancel their golf teams. They are too high profile and consistently ranked in the Top 20 in the country for men and women.

Track and Field is a HUGE non revenue sport and likely the 3rd most expensive sport on campus after Football and Baseball. Only difference is no one goes to track and field matches in college.

I would agree with that assessment. I could, however, see some D1 schools moving on from Golf if they just weren't that good. In the grand scheme of things canceling golf does nothing for a university in terms of saving money rather than canceling say Track. Track is highly expensive and when they travel there are a ton of kids they have to transport.

I can say whatever I want.

In the grand schemes of things, Golf is not as expensive as compared to the other sports. In one of these threads there is an athletic Budget report from LSU for the 2017 school year. I am not just going to randomly find it to prove I am right, when I know I am right. Women's Basketball costs more to operate than Men's and Women's Golf and Tennis combined. So yeah, in the grand scheme of things, it isn't as expensive as other sports.

I was on the practice green with an assistant athletic director from Wake Forest this morning. We were talking about schools dropping sports. He was talking about how much money football generates for the total athletic budget, and said if football is cancelled, a lot of schools are going to be dropping a lot more sports.

The football industrial complex is stronger than the average person realizes. The money my hometown high school football team makes funds most of the extra-curriculars for the county's school system, for example.

Wake is much smaller than most Power 5 conference schools, so I'm not sure if it would hit them as hard as say, conference rivals Florida State and Clemson. Schools like UNC, Notre Dame and Miami maybe not quite as much for various reasons.

I would be pretty shocked to see the P5 schools not play football this year. Going to conference schedules only like the B1G is doing may be a template for compromise the P5 may emulate, but even that's a big sacrifice (yes, even for schools like Texas and Michigan with sports money to burn). This impacts TV ratings, local tourism take, sponsorship deals--goes beyond the scope of just the school.

Stanford essentially has their own big league golf course plus big donors who are golfers even without TW. They would lose a lot of other sports before Golf!

If the PGA can find a way to make it work then I'd tend to believe it could work for college kids. Difference is that the college incurs a lot of costs to play with no incoming revenue. I think it all comes down to football... no football no golf.

I was looking at the USC team (after hearing Zambri was leaving) and noticed they only have 7 boys on the roster. Could be that their incoming class hasn't been added but that seems light to me.

And speaking of USC... anyone hear what happened to their head coach? All articles just say it was a mutual decision but he was the longest tenured coach at the school, it is his alma mater and his son was going there next year. Very strange circumstances.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.
