Putting with the cups raised

Ok so it is obviously easier to putt with raised cups but it seems like whenever I do make putts on raised cups they are right in the MIDDLE, I’m wondering if the consistency and confidence will bleed through into when the cups go back to normal... any thought or experience on this?

It possibly could, works both ways though. The first time you have lip out...or two...

i must be the only one who doesn't putt well with the raised cups. i address the ball and just sit there thinking i can't make it, something about not seeing the ball drop in the cup. i also don't like leaving the flag in on short putts for the same reason

I seem to be hitting a lot of them right in the center myself. I'm hopeful that I will leave fewer putts short when they go back in the ground.

Think about putting indoors, like to a table leg. We’ve all done it. Most table legs are substantially smaller than a golf hole but most people don’t struggle to hit that target. It’s all about perception and how you aim to your target.

We are using raised cups at my club. It's definitely easier to hit the raised cup than to make an actual putt -- no doubt. Still, though, I much prefer playing with raised cups to not playing at all...

I think putting to a raised cup is much easier. What is not easier is agreeing on whether or not the putt likely would have been made. Some guys are pretty liberal with their estimation.

Just played a course with regular cup in with a cut of the those swim noodle so the ball doesn't fall all the way in. Much easier

Ball hits the cup it counts. Move on to the next hole.

Not a fan of raised cups. Prefer the cup in upside down or the swim noodle thing. Having said that it's not too hard to tell if a putt would've dropped or not. I tene to err on the side of caution and not give myself anything that isn't dead center or moving so slow it would fall. Had two chips hit the cup yesterday but couldn't rightfully count either. I really think one had a good chance to fall, though.

I'm putting better to raised cups. Reminds me of croquet from when I was a kid--just hit the stake! I'm wondering if it will make me more aggressive on those shorter putts. Definitely will be leaving the flag in!

Maybe, maybe not. I think your mindset has changed to making contact with the cup to count as a holed putt. Now that same thought process will look different without the raised cup there. It is worth testing out though for sure. I have always been the type to have the ball die into the hole. A buddy I play with has the mentality to hit the back of the cup on each putt. Im guessing my putts will roll a lot more differently after the raised cups go away.

Golf gods say no.... I would guess your speed is too fast for real cups cause you can smash it at an object where in real putting if you miss you're gonna be 8 feet by...

But maybe perhaps you can use the visualization of putting at an object vs a hole after the Zombie Apocalypse.... do you have the mental fortitude to pull it off or will you revert back to the old ways.... stay tuned folks!

Totally agree on that, I have always be really unsure on speed but it seems like the putts I miss are never short anymore and only 3 feet by tops... hopefully this will carry over!

We had raised pool noodles for two days. Then they cut them down below the ground. For the two days, one of our foursome became great. He used enough speed instead of dying the ball at the hole. Confident. Best putting of his life. When they were cut down, he went right back to his normal self.

I’m thinking there is a moral to the story.

I wonder what the maximum bounce back is of a theoretical made putt. Like if you blast a putt at the raised cup, hit the cup dead center and the ball bounces back a foot toward you-ish, it probably wasn’t going to go in.

My guess is somewhere less than 6 inches.

Put the cups right side up. Remove the pool noodles. And for God's sake no more raised cups. These things are good for showing that you "care" and all. But come on, they don't do anything but take away some enjoyment of the game.

Consider yourself lucky when the worst thing is the cups are raised when you’re outside playing golf right now.

Courses opening up monday around here. Large majority of the public courses doing the raised cups, our club is sticking with the pool noodles (much better IMO)

but why would it be easier to putt with raised cup?.......... if it was raised to grass level, the putt would never go in (nothing to go into)........... note i have played yet with raised cups.

i'd have assumed you have lag even 3 foot putts..................

The ball cannot go in at all, so the premise is you simply need to hit the cup and it counts as holed. For anything outside of say 8 ft it honestly doesn't make much difference,, but the short ones you can hammer

krt22, i didn't understand. thank you.................so you are talking about a stick in the ground. i was thinking putting a short piece of pool noodle around the flag stick.

Not a stick, the cup liner, basically not fully inserting it into the cup so it's still a 4.25" target. (most are doing it about 1" above the green). My club is doing a small cut pool noodle inside a normal depth cup, so the ball cant fully drop below the green surface (but can still enter it)
