Fractured lower fibula/ankle, any advice?

I fractured my lower fibula/ankle back in the beginning of February. I had to have reconstructive surgery that ended with a plate and 9 screws. My surgeon said he’s never had a surgery like that go so smoothly and everything fit back together like a puzzle.

Ive been 100% weight bearing since mid March. Just this week I started walking around my apartment relatively easy. Hoping to be fully walking by May.

I was just hoping to get some advice and tips for when Im finally able to golf. Im super paranoid Im going to hurt it while playing. I posted pictures of the before and after of my ankle.

This will sound odd but luckily for you you did not play on the damaged ankle. It will take time to trust it but your subconscious does not have any “oh crap this is gonna hurt” when you swing. If it had been a gradual deterioration of the joint you would have more of an issue when returning. Make sure your rehab is done and you’ll be fine.

Almost 3 years ago, I was in a car accident that totally destroyed my left ankle (I'm a right handed golfer). My tibula, fibula, and talus bones were broken. I had to have two surgeries because the first one didn't fix the fibula. I think because of how the impact of the accident happened, a lot of the ligaments and other things were destroyed/damaged as well.

To this day I have a lot of scar tissue on the outside of my ankle, and it's only about 70% as strong and flexible as my right ankle. I can still play golf and it doesn't really bother me now, but I can't swing with the same speed and in the same way I used to. I can't push off and push into my left ankle as much as I used to.

It sounds like your case isn't as bad as that. If it was just the fibula and the surgery was successful, you should be able to get back to close to 100%.

Don't worry about hurting it while playing golf. Have you ever sprained your ankle while performing a golf swing? If not, then you're not going to now. If anything, be careful not to step on a pine cone and roll your ankle.

Just wait until your doctor gives you the okay to play golf. And complete your physical therapy. Do those exercises at home religiously. I think I was lazy with some of the rehab and it could be why my ankle hasn't recovered more fully. Eventually I want to get a stem cell treatment but you'll be fine.
