High Swing Speed Iron Recommendation

FDgolf17

Recommended Posts

I'm a pretty high swing speed player (carry a stock 7i 185) and I'm currently gaming Mizuno MP18 Blades 3-PW with KBS C-Taper 130X shafts. With a normal swing, I launch the ball very straight and entirely too high. I normally have to play every ball with some sort of flighted trajectory, or I club up.

I like my shafts, but I'm not opposed to switching. I'm just afraid that anything heavier or stiffer will make my short irons too hard to hit. I've been eyeballing the Mizuno MP20 Blades because of the higher CG in the short irons, but I'm afraid that's not enough.

Any recommendation on a blade (preferably) or player's iron that will drop my ball flight without going a lot further?

Best advise I can give is get fit!! One shaft may work with one iron head for you, but the next one may not. Try the Mizuno shaft optimizer for some suggestions on shaft for your swing. A good fitter will fine tune you from there. MP20 MB are a great iron! Feel/performance is great!! 919T is another option as well as MMC if you need a bit of forgiveness?!

If you want to drop your flight I’d try the Srixon 785. Lower flight and spin. If your ball flight is that high though it’s likely due to dynamic loft and other swing issues that will be addressed through lessons not fit. I also hit the ball super high and am working on changes during lockdown to lower it. It’s working and I’m finding trying to hit cuts and swing a bit more left with earlier hit clearing is helping. Stock 6 iron carries 190-195 for reference.

In theory, you know you’re already playing one of the lowest launching combos you could try. FWIW I had the Mp20 and they fly very high. They have a pretty low CG and even the short irons went high. The MP18 have a higher CG and should have a lower flight. Another thing to consider is that from a fitting perspective sometimes a softer flex in your iron shaft will actually lead to lower dynamic loft and lower spin because it can draw a bit more. For me, I hit the C taper stiff lower with less spin than the C taper X. Consider that DJ plays X100 soft stepped. He can hit 190 ball speed with driver. So don’t just assume something that’s low/low is the fit.

A ctaper 130x is one of the lower launching charts out there

either get a lesson to fix a swing problem or strengthen the lofts a touch.

get some track man data. If you are hitting a 7iron 185 then it is not going to high.

Nailed it ?

my 7 iron is 95 mph, and I get lower spin with a softer flex.

the shaft optimizer wants me in a PX 6.5 then a C-Taper........... I had my best combined results with spin, flight dispersion with the Modus 120x/ and Modus 120s. Dispersion was a fraction better with the X flex, but spin was a bit lower in S flex. I know some of the results vary due to swing, but when I flushed both, the S-Flex was a bit lower spin by 150+ rpm

i am very slow/ deliberate. I know people with quicker tempos and transitions may not get the same results, but for my swing, the softer flex helped reduce spin.

My current shafts are XP 115’s in S Flex except the 2 iron which is the XP 115 in X-flex.

my previous set I had DG X100’s in my MP 67’s and I hit my 7 iron with 7400-7600rpm. The softer flexes seem to do as Tigerinthewoods has said, dropped dynamic loft, and reduced spin. Same with my Driver, I switched From a Ping Tour 65x to a Tensei Orange (Non-Pro) X-Flex and it dropped the spin considerably ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

How high is high though? I thought I hit my irons really high and then I watched Rory hit a 7i and realized... no, no I don't.

Anyway, before you do anything major, I'd try a TP5X as it's the lowest spinning tour ball I've seen off the mid irons. Wedge and driver spin seem pretty close to many others, but man it was low spin off my 6i. The chrome soft x I got fit into 2 years ago spun 800-900rpm more, which is what I needed for my swing.

Do you like the feel of C Taper? I've noticed with myself and many others... as the above posters allude to, sometimes if something feels too stiff you can unconsciously add dynamic loft during the swing which can add access height. Going a little softer can actually lower your flight because you will lean the shaft a little more as your body feels it doesn't need to "help" the ball up as with something so stiff.

I have a similar issue-high speed player with similar stock 7i to you (on good ball striking days). I was a member of a indoor golf simulator place for a bit so did most of practicing on the simulator for about a month. I play a set of 712 AP2 with x100s and tend to launch pretty high. Although as echoed earlier, how high is too high?

On the simulator, I would try to work the ball and experiment with ball position, face, etc. Although a portion of high launch can certainly be secondary to technique, clubhead design plays a big role. I have an old Titleist blade 4 iron that I would hit and it undoubtedly launched lower than my AP2 4 iron, but average distance would be much lower due to less off-center hit forgiveness (more like zero).

I'm no expert in club design, but from my understanding the design elements that make irons forgiving also encourage high launch.

Maybe try bending your current set strong or finding a set with stronger lofts.

From my experience on the simulator, trajectory is the main variable in distance. Lower will likely mean longer with your swing speeds. I don't think you can drop your ball flight without gaining distance if you keep your swing speed up. Unless of course you go to blades and miss the center .

Changing shafts will only lower ballflight if your release is late. Google Tom Wishon for reference.
